The best part about the designers, decorators and homeowners who attend my workshops is they already know me before they get there. So it’s like I’m your friend, teaching your colour class. Paula (below) and I have been emailing back and forth forever because she comments a lot on my posts. Comments are almost like…
Where I’ll be in May & Some Must-Read Posts
05/02/2012On Mothers Day weekend, I will be at the Pure Painters Booth at the EPIC show at the Vancouver Convention Centre West. Here’s what you’ll find at the show: – Sit and listen to visionaries, thought-leaders, musicians, artists and even comedians – Eat and drink your way through 90,000 sqft of local and organic goodies – Shop for…
After I had finished decorating this living/dining room for my lovely clients Jim & Carol I sent the photos to some magazines. Only to receive zero response. I tried to figure out what was wrong with it.
Then in February, at the Design Bloggers Conference in LA I got to chatting with Kimberley Seldon. She is a celebrity designer from Toronto. She had a show called Design for Living for many years and is the editor of a fabulous on-line magazine called Dabble
Andrea Brooks attended one of my True Colour Expert Workshops last year and her beautiful home is being featured in At Home in Arkansas this month! Congrats Andrea, your home is stunning!
Undertones in Fabrics & Countertops
03/27/2012The system that I’ve created for distinguishing undertones is still evolving and each workshop I get better at teaching it to the designers, decorators and design enthusiasts who attend. For example, I have been trying to figure out an efficient way to work with fabrics, tiles and countertop samples to make it really experiential for participants. They already work with real paint chips on the first day and compare, compare, compare. Comparing colour is what I do with my clients throughout the entire consultation so that they understand why I’m recommending certain colours and it’s the first thing I teach to everyone.
Some of my readers have said “I have not bought your book because I have trouble seeing what you are talking about on your blog”. Turns out, when someone shows you, “That’s green beige, that’s blue gray”, you can see it immediately. Then it just takes seeing it over and over for you to start noticing undertones on your own. This is the second of a two-part guest post written by my Design Associate, Irene Hill.
“My first post, How Maria Saved my Paint Life, started to tell you the story of how meeting Maria at one of her True Colour Expert Workshops changed the way I see and specify paint colours.
This is the first of a two-part guest post written by my Design Associate, Irene Hill. It describes how we met. . . read on and find out that you may have a lot in common with her! Brown (with a green undertone) fireplace. Pinterest “I have a confession. I have been a designer for a long time…
As I mentioned in my Apartment Therapy interview on Friday, when I started my design business, it was one call by a potential client that started me on my journey to get colour right. She said, “I’m trying to pick colours for my house and I see all these undertones but I can’t figure out…
Colour Confidence in Toronto
06/06/2011What would it be like for you to have more confidence when specifying colour for walls, fabrics or finishes? You can learn something new in a course, but do you always walk away with the ability to apply what you’ve learned the next day? “I learned a lot in this course and I’m way…
Moms will Appreciate this One
06/01/2011Photo by Maria Killam I am in Toronto preparing for True Colour Expert Training at Designers Walk starting tomorrow! After my assistant and I got everything organized, we went out to find a patio and I found this sign (above), that I had to share with you sitting outside a variety store downtown on Dupont….
source I have lost count of the number of times I have been hired to help a homeowner ‘correct’ a colour issue created by a designer who chose finishes without knowing how to combine the undertones of the colours and neutrals of the tiles or granite they had selected. This bathroom of one of my…
Will I see You in May or June?
04/25/2011For You! (source) My good friend Irene Fraser (below) from Design Happens asked me to give a talk on ‘Creating Flow with Colour’ next Saturday April 30 at the Ridge Meadows Home Show in Maple Ridge. I’ll be on the design stage at Noon and it’ll go for approximately 20 minutes and then I’ll be…
Who is Driving your Career?
03/15/2011source Think back to an experience in your life, when you were young and sitting in the backseat. Who was driving? What were you doing? You could coast, hang out and harass the person driving, but they still determined where you were going. There’s parts of our life where we’re in the back seat but…
True Colour Experts in Atlanta
02/10/2011Photo by Patsy Overton, True Colour Expert Last weekend, 17 participants convened at Gregory’s Paint & Flooring in John’s Creek, Atlanta. It was perfect being in a space right above a Benjamin Moore Dealer (way easier to do the homework each day) as well as having flooring samples conveniently in the same place to show…
source I arrived in Atlanta on Tuesday night to a heavy rainstorm. It was just like this. . . source Then 2 of my participants who were schedule to fly Wednesday couldn’t make it because of the snowstorms happening elsewhere (this one in Chicago): source Everyone else arrived and we are having a wonderful time…
