If you’ve ever obsessed over bathroom lighting and colour, you’ll love my warm wood and white renovation story. I’m sharing the real-life design tweaks and the secret sauce for a bathroom you’ll never tire of.
Warm Wood Bathroom Renovation Makeover
You’ve seen a few glimpses of my primary bathroom. But finally! My horizontal striped, sheer drapes were finally installed (only 2 1/2 years later 😬) so here is my official primary bath makeover reveal.
The bathroom we inherited had tiny windows installed high in the shower and the toilet room, basically a room with very little natural light. So after my good friend Jan Romanuk (who managed my entire renovation) redesigned the footprint, we installed this large window instead. It completely transformed the entire room.
The first Create Your Dream Home virtual training class starts Wednesday! There are still a few seats left in my second course in November, and you can register here.

Before the bathroom renovation
This was the before. The shower has the glass door on the left in the photo below. And the water closet is the glass door on the right. The tub in this room was located in between two open doorways. We swapped the placement of the tub and shower (below). And we created a proper closing doorway.

We needed two extra doors. One to replace the modern glass door into the water closet (above right). And another for the entrance to the bathroom. The problem was that the only spare door we had was the old closet door (keep scrolling to see more pics).
To solve this, we repurposed two doors that we removed from the two rooms I turned into my office. The challenge? They were designed for an 8-foot room, while my bathroom has 10-foot ceilings. To make them work, Jan added transom windows above both the water closet and the new dressing room entrance (which used to be a small closet and workout room). She is so clever at problem solving!

Remember the last primary bath in the rancher we lived in before this house? My vintage botanical art prints were repurposed here (above, left).

Custom Penny Tile Floor
My floor was a custom design. After the white penny tile was dry laid, I added the flowers and the border. Find more details about my bathroom floor in this post.

Below is the vanity as it appeared before. The new vanity remained in the same location, along with the water closet.

Warm wood vanity and mixed metal details
A warm wood vanity is the perfect way to add warmth to a timeless white bathroom and I repeated the warmer tones with the arched mirrors.
I also mixed metals here. Here are some guidelines for mixing metals like a pro. Because, gone are the days of needing to match ALL your metal finishes.
Here’s how I mixed different metal finishes in my bathroom. My mirror and pulls are gold/brass, but I kept the chrome faucets from the old bathroom as well as the chrome towel bars. My sconces are polished nickel. This gives the entire design a more refined feel.

More timeless white bathroom details
Another detail to note is the installation of a 5-inch matching backsplash (below right), which aligns with the height of the faucets and features an elegant ogee edge profile, continuing seamlessly along each side (below left).

Here’s the old entrance to my dressing room. We moved it to the right to make room for the walk-in shower.

Terreeia’s one request was a triple set of body shower heads — and it truly is divine. I’ve gotten so used to it that whenever I shower in a hotel, I feel like I have to run around just to get wet, haha.

And of course, no one will be surprised to see my white beveled subway tile shower. I appreciate how the finishing carpenter extended the tile visually with the moulding detail. I learned a lot about moulding details last week. Here are the most important measurements to know.
The only recessed light we have in this bathroom is one. Right above the shower. That is all you need. Any more and you’ll feel like you’re in an operating room. Terreeia requested it and uses it, I never do but she does think I’m a mole with my obsession with lamps.
Terreeia’s side of the vanity is on the right so she requested a towel hook so I looked for the prettiest one I could find in marble (no longer available).

And the beauty of a timeless white bathroom is that can add any colour you want. Just for fun, I photoshopped my water closet in an earthier green (below). So pretty, right?

I hope you enjoyed my primary bathroom makeover tour. I can help you create a timeless bathroom too!

Maria’s Timeless Primary White Bathroom Reveal
Oh how pretty! Looks so peaceful . Looks like an upscale spa . So relaxing . Love the glass over the doors .
Worth the wait! So pretty!!
Beautiful bathroom! We did a bathroom remodel and used penny tile on the floor and I love it! I still see the lines across the floor even though the installer insured me I wouldn’t but oh well. The best discovery for us was the recessed light/exhaust fan combo. Every time the light is turned on in the shower, the exhaust fan is on too!
Which recessed light/fan combo did you use? I’ve been looking for a long time for our bathroom remodel.
Thank you!
Gorgeous!! Love the transom windows- they are so perfect in this room. The bathroom truly is an elegant timeless design.
Yes I love the added detail they bring to the room! Thanks for your comment. Maria
Gorgeous! The curtains are the icing on the room. Well done Jan and Maria
Beautiful, Maria! And that layout is spot on! It looks like it was built that way to begin with (the right way). Bravo! 👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Definitely needed the window! Maria
Where do you keep your hand towel? And does Terreeia drip her way to her towel or bring it over when she needs to wash her hands? I like to wash my hands before touching the clean towel…just wonder how it works for you.
Well it’s one step to the towel so she’s dripping I guess 🙂 as am I because mine is beside the tub. Maria
It’s beautiful! The transoms were an excellent solution and really add charm to the space. What is the countertop? —so soft and subtle.
It’s Caesarstone Organic white.
Thank you!
If someone stood on a chair outside the bathroom door and looked through the transom, would they be able to see into the bathroom? Or does the glass have a privacy coating on it?
Since you moved the doorway, why didn’t you buy new 10′ doors? I can’t imagine it was cheaper to build and frame the transom versus buying 2 new doors.
Absolutely beautiful & timeless. I can’t believe that is the same bathroom. Definitely worth the wait! The simple white subway tile in the shower looks gorgeous, too. Not sure if it is the glossy finish or the beveled edge but I truly love it! And the view out that window is icing on the cake. Good thing you added that yellow stool because I would find myself wanting to linger a little longer to admire the space and the view.
So pretty. I’ve been waiting forever to see the final product!
How is the shower tile edge finished?
Since you updated your website, I have been having trouble with the menu bubble in the upper left corner. It interferes with viewing the photos and makes scrolling really uncomfortable. Can you move that to the right corner?
Simply beautiful and timeless! What size are the beveled subway tiles?
Maria, I love, love your new primary bath. The curtains are a perfect last touch. And I love your yellow ceiling against the white walls. Can you tell the color white that you used? Thank you 😍 Robin
Truly stunning bathroom. I love the yellow ceiling. I’m not brave enough for a vibrant ceiling color, but I love it here.
My absolute fave is the penny tile flooring. SO classic and timeless and happy.
Gorgeous and thoughtful reno.
This is timely! We’re current renovating our primary bath. Your tub is beautiful- is it smaller than 60 inches? My desire for a freestanding tub but with a limited alcove space has me paralyzed. 🙂
What stain did you use for your vanity?
Lovely space! I love your ceiling color. Would you be so kind to share your paint colors for this space? I would love to have my primary bath space done before my surgery.
Thank you
Beautiful! I learned so much from this post 🙂
Can you do a post about charcoal grout, please? I love the white grout you did but being a Brunette my color fade out will stain the tile, never mind a husband who works in the woods. I’m a clean freak and even the Mapei flex CQ may not be able to stay clean with these caviats. I’m redoing my shower and on the fence about which grout colors can still look classic and timeless. I was thinking of doing Mapei charcoal grout with my white tile and shower floor.
Do share your gorgeous paint colors! It’s divine
Stunning Maria! Most beautiful with brilliant changes. ❤️👏👏👏
