I’m really excited to announce my new Colour Confidence Method™! Last week’s Specify Colour with Confidence™ training was the first group to go through this new method with me and here’s what one of the participants had to say about the class: “Maria’s course was fantastic – I learned a wealth of information from her and knew…
{source click on image} Last summer when I wrote this post on The Best White Bathrooms, I declared that all bathrooms should be white. Some people got downright cranky and decided that I had no idea what I was talking about. Just to clarify, what I meant, was that basically, you should choose mostly white…
{click on images for source} The following is a comment from one of my readers: “Our house is almost built but I am not excited. I have listened to the advice of a colour consultant that was provided by our builder so now I have cortina brown kitchen floor tiles with natural finish knotty alder…

Learn to be Bossy Yet Charming
09/08/2013This is a post written by Irene Hill, my Design Associate: It’s been two years since I’ve started working with Maria and it’s been about the same amount of time since I had a paying client, but occasionally I get an emergency call from a friend. What it Looks like to be in a Private Forum
07/24/2013Ugh. . . I just had a couple come into the store (Benjamin Moore) who were determined to paint their 90’s Surrey Stucco cup-de-sac home Chocolate Fondue with Black Bean Soup Trim. When I tried to steer them away they bristled at me; it became clear that they hadn’t come in for advice, only my agreement. These in my opinion can be the most difficult customers and the tight rope walk between “The customer is always right” and “Lord, save this house!!” is a tricky one. Welcome to exterior season everyone, may the spirit of diplomacy be with you!
Rules for Colors
07/09/2013Well I’m kicking off the first day of Learn How to Specify Colour for Interiors Summer School tomorrow with my Rules for Whites, Rules for Neutrals and Rules for Colour. Then we’ll jump right in to learning my 7 basic principles and questions I always have in my back pocket at every consultation.
Next week will be a step-by-step to choosing colour in every area of your home, what to paint and what can’t be painted.
Here’s a sneak peek of one of the colour rules:
4 Ways to Work with Colour over Neutrals
05/07/2013When I give the participants in my colour training an in-class exercise, or homework (hey you get your money’s worth with us) I notice that when they select colours to create a colour palette they take the undertone of whatever paint chip/s they have to work with and repeat it. So if I show a…
