Who doesn’t love a big bathroom reveal? Today I’m sharing my sister’s serene zen inspired primary bathroom renovation!
Get the sledgehammer and get the party started!
My sister Elizabeth and her husband have been working on their primary bathroom renovation for a couple years now. One way to make sure you can’t go back is to take out a wall and that’s what Bill did first.

They live in a house that was built in the mid 80s but the 70s influence in all their bathrooms was still going strong.
The primary suite is a “me” time space
Elizabeth’s vision for her new bathroom was modern and zen. Living in a house with kids and all their stuff she wanted it to feel like a calm sanctuary and have that extend into her bedroom (not shown). I have to say, too many people neglect turning their primary suite into the luxurious retreat it should be.
So I’m delighted she’s finally treating herself!
The fun part! Shopping for accessories
After the bathroom was finished we went shopping to style it! Since her new vanity was a cognac one from Home Depot (so they saved some money there) we repeated the orange tone with a copper mirror that was installed behind the bathroom door (below).
The next thing was art. Once we found the picture that captured the zen vibe Elizabeth envisioned for this space, I had a lot of fun pulling in colour and pattern with different coloured towels to coordinate.

So fun to see you and your sister work together, Maria. Lovely bathroom with beautiful tile.
Oh how fun !
It’s so peaceful you got your Zen !
It looks awesome .
Your entire family is so nice. I love seeing you all working together to make a space more beautiful.
Stunning! And you nailed the Zen style perfectly. This is inspiring my guest bath update. Thank you!
Does the paint color actually relate to the tile?
No my sister wanted a warmer colour so it was chosen to relate to the cognac vanity, an orange beige complex cream. You can get the list of my curated neutrals in either of my ebooks available here. http://www.mariakillam.com/shop-landing-page/#interior-solutions
Great question! Maria
Thinking the same!
Me three! I have the color wheel and immediately questioned the tile color and paint color.
Well it could have been a blue grey to relate to the blue tile and the orange beige to relate to the warm tones of the vanity and art was another option yes. Maria
Just wait till we get to the stage where everyone’s yanking out their black faucets. 😉
Love what you’ve done ( I always do!) –what are the plants? Are they some type of air plant?
THX
Thanks! No they are real tropical plants. Maria
I’d love to know how to maintain a picture (painting? on canvas? with a wood frame? or even a print) in a bathroom with a shower. Can you please share information about that?
Curious to know….I loved all the decorating, but wondered about the removed wall. Am I the only one who would sacrifice a smaller vanity area and smaller feeling bathroom, to have a private toilet? (Even if it shares space with the shower.)
It’s lovely. I especially like the light fixture and how it was balanced with the mirror and plants. 🙂
