I get this question about which grout colour to choose a lot… so let’s talk about my go-to grout colour and how to achieve a designer tile look with less maintenance. Plus I’m busting the “big tile” myth. This video gives you practical, visual advice to achieve a timeless tile look without all the worry about grout maintenance.

🎂 But first… a milestone!

October 31 is my 17-year blogiversary!!

Can you believe it’s been 17 years today since I wrote my very first blog post.? I always forget until Halloween rolls around that this day marks that milestone. It was a Friday night, just like this year.

In fact, that weekend I wrote five posts, stayed up way too late, and then woke up Sunday morning at 3:00 a.m. with yet another idea. I was completely hooked.

If I had known back then that writing this blog would carry me from a falling-apart rented house to the dream home I’m living in today, I’m not sure I would have believed it. It’s been a journey filled with creativity, growth, and so many unexpected blessings.

Look at me 17 years ago, at 41 years old. I still worried I might never amount to much — I hadn’t gone to design school, and by then, I’d been fired 7 or 8 times.

But here’s the truth: it’s never too late to start something new!

Let’s celebrate with a giveaway!

I’m giving away 5 of my Styling School Bundles to you!

Inside, you’ll discover three transformative modules that show you exactly how to take your living room from flat and frustrating to warm, cozy, and beautifully pulled together—with the perfect pillows, lighting, and art.

And here’s the best part: in the Throw Pillow module, I’ll teach you my Colour Balancing Method—a simple, foolproof approach that makes so much more sense than that 60-30-10 rule everyone talks about (honestly, I still can’t figure that one out when I look it up!).

🎉 To enter, just leave a comment below telling me how long you’ve been following me and what your favourite decorating lesson has been so far.

I’ll announce the winners in next Friday’s post—so don’t miss it!

Which grout colour should I choose?

Ok, back to my post this week on YouTube. We’re diving into one of those game-changing details that can totally elevate your bathroom design — grout colour.

Every time I teach my Create Your Dream Home course or lead my True Colour Expert training event, I get a lot of questions about tile and grout.

(BTW, my Chicago True Colour Expert Training date is live and we’re planning something for February in Vancouver so stay tuned!)

Homes & Gardens

So, I created a video where I’m breaking down the three types of grout you need to know about. You’ll also discover my best tips on how to use smaller, more interesting tiles without sacrificing practicality.

If you’ve been defaulting to oversized tiles everywhere, this might just inspire a rethink. Let’s explore how to get that designer look with grout doing the heavy lifting instead of you doing the heavy cleaning.

Everything you need to know about grout!

Watch it here!

And don’t forget to leave a comment below telling me how long you’ve been following me and what your favourite decorating lesson has been so far. ⬇️

I’ve been following you for about 4 years-since right before I bought my forever home in the desert! It’s the first house that I chose on my own, to suit my needs, and you’ve been such a help as I decorate. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is lamps everywhere. Darkness is coming ever earlier, and the warm glow makes my heart sing.

  2. Alisha says:

I’ve been following you since back in the days of participating on the gardenweb home decorating forum. It’s been maybe 12-15 years! My favorite decorating lesson is about the undertones of beiges. I could always see when things looked wrong but didn’t understand way. You pieced that together for me. Always enjoy your site and resources. 🙂

Happy blogiversary!! I came across you in the Pandemic as we were all stuck in our homes. I think we even sort of broke the rules as I had you come to my home for a colour consultation when we were still supposed to be in our “Bubble” !!! It was so great, every bit of advice I have taken to heart and love reading your blog and learn so much from it. Love your attitude and practical approach.
    Thanks Maria
    Keep on blogging
    Patti

I am going with 2” inch hex tile on my floor, but due to budget, get will have to do the dreaded 12×24 on the shower walls. The difference in labor costs between 12×24 and smaller subway tile was enormous.

I have been following you for years–I’m not sure how many! My biggest takeaway has definitely been understanding the correct use of undertones and your color wheel. (I have quoted you many times!) We recently downsized to a townhouse, and that information has been so helpful. We still have a ways to go with our decorating, but hopefully we’re on the right track thanks to you.

Maria I have been following you for 16 years! Time has flown by fast, but you blog was akways a highlight! The ‘’lessons/blogs” I learned about whites need light to show the best and the undertones of beige have been the most significant to me! It has been fun to watch your company grow and to get to know you over these years (and Teeria)!

Following you for probably 6 or 7 years. Love getting the posts. My favorite still is a medium coloured wood floor is like a pair of jeans. You won’t be able to tell what trend it was installed in. I use this all the time when helping clients pick floors

I’ve been following you for at least 5 years, though I don’t remember exactly how I found you. I love your honest, straightforward approach and your alternatives to ripping everything out and having to do a full reno. Using art, lighting, and color to bring a space to life has worked out well for me—thanks to you, Maria!

I have been following you for years. You have helped me make so many decisions (that I won’t regret) in my kitchen, living room, and dining room remodel. We are currently working on our bathroom and once again I’am watching all your videos on how to keep
It timeless and a space that we will
love for a very long time.

    Hi Maria!

I’ve been following your posts and videos for just a couple months now and I LOVE them! The practical tip I have now adopted is to start the colour of my room and decor based on a piece of art. I have always loved this one piece of artwork and now I am pulling it together in the rest of my decor…looks awesome!!

I took your 2 1/2 in-person training in Chicago in 2017 I think, but I had been following you for a few years before that. So probably it’s been around 10 years. I can’t even believe what I didn’t know back then and how much I’ve learned from you.
    Happy Blogiversary!

I’ve been following you for years and love your advice and your style. It’s time to update my great room and have attempted to choose the perfect paint color for six months. So, I purchased your color wheel to help and it was magic. Your yellow/lemon theme inspired me and I’m gogin with a Morris & Co. lemon wall paper in the kitchen and Wilmington Tan on the walls. Love it! That was a great lesson but also LOVE your lamp advice:-)

  16. Ellen Forman says:

I’ve been reading your blog for almost 10 years. I’ve bought your large color boards and ebooks, your mood board course, and I became a true color expert at the class at your house in the fall of 2023. You have taught me so much, and I now work in sales in commercial interior design. That end result started with a few decisions – and the best one was starting to read your blog 💛

Oh and my favorite decorating lesson? Good styling can distract from almost anything, especially with enough lamps.

    Wonderful video!
I’ve been following you for about 8 years. Favorite consistent advice:
    Hard/permanent items = classic
Soft/easily removed or replaced = your favorite color/pattern (easily changed).
    Hugs!

Maria!!!! I ‘ve been following you for about a year. We moved from the midwest to California and I swore I would never buy a track home. Low and behold, our kids left for college and we down sized to a TRACK HOME. Since then I have been constructing and designing to make it look dreamy. My biggest win from your advice is the penny tile and the layering. I learn something new with each video. Keep it up. Love your stair carpet.

  23. September 2015 is the oldest email I can find that I forwarded of yours…back in the Colour Me Happy days. 🙂

Since then, I’ve recommended the blog and your videos to probably 100s of fans, all across the US. (A Seattle friend mentioned how much she loves your work just last week!)

Thanks for being so freaking awesome, Maria!

I’m a new follower just finding you 3 months ago but have already referred you as a “must” resource to 3 other friends. My #1 take away so far is is gathering all the colors of items that stay in a renovation .. stone fireplace color, counter top color, wood ceiling color, etc and use those colors to determine the best undertones for your paint colors. This was a revelation to me and explained why a previous color, once it was on the walks, just didn’t quite look right. It’s the little things that don’t go away have a huge impact on your overall color scheme. Thanks for that!

I’ve learned the basics of setting the stage of a well designed house. Those elements of design have transformed my way of thinking when decorating and shopping. From colors, lighting and fixtures. Along with tile selection. Maria has shared masterfully many elements to take my space from blah and boring to refreshed and classic to my personality.

Only just found you in early 2024!! And thank goodness I did because your insight into color tone open my eyes! I could tell certain things were off or not working right together, but never ever would’ve dawned on me that it was the undertone of the paint, the hard surfaces, and the fabrics that was making my spaces not feel like I wanted
them to feel! Now all I see is the undertone! Still have not always perfected identifying the undertone, but I can tell when it’s off!

  28. Beckie Gaskill says:

I found you in 2013 – as we were building our dream home. It made such a difference to feel confident choosing fixtures and paint colors. I immediately bought your color boards, great investment. Thank you

I’ve had tile installed in several homes. The best color for grout on the floor is the color of the dirt where you live and best if it is epoxy grout which stands up much better than regular grout. Live and learn.

  31. Peggy Lyon says:

I’ve been following you for at least 15 years and I don’t think I can point to just one post, because you have shared so much valuable information over the years, it’s hard to choose. But I was lucky during an online event to have you pick my house to provide advice on the paint color for my door and shutters. You asked people to send in a picture of the front of their house and then you selected certain ones and gave us color suggestions. That was 2 houses and well over 10 years ago, but I will never forget how beautiful my SW Pennywise front door turned out! You have a gift!! Thanks for sharing it with us.

    Maria!!!
I “Discovered “ you about 10 years ago. I worked in a Home store for 26 years and hated when clients would ask me to come to their house. They wanted me to tell them “it’s pretty “. So I did.
I knew it was overwhelming to “redo”.
Then you came along and gave everyone the tools to get Color right.
You also gave people courage to say when to change and when to add.
    Thanks

I have been following you for close to ten years – hired you for a consult by phone for a living room paint color. You were so right! Also bought color boards and some courses to read and learn. Love design and color – it’s my happy place! My favorite design advice is to put the color boards ( not those paint chips) against a white background to help to choose your best color.
Keep blogging Maria – I will read them all! Thanks

  36. Vicki says:

I cannot remember exactly when I started following your blog, Maria. I do know that it was well before 2017, because that is when we redid the outside of our home. I was already familiar with you before then.

  37. Nancy says:

I’ve been following you Maria for about 8 years
So hard to just pick one thing when I’ve learned so much .
But the one thing that I’ve found that I’ve learned and now use is color to not be afraid of color .
It really has brighten my homes and my days when I come home .
It’s also easier and more forgiving .

I found you as I was wrapping up a re-paint project of my entire home about 2 years ago. I was so distraught after spending a lot of money on that project when I found your blog amd began reading about your neutral undertone system. Your tips on styling a room to distract the eye from a misstep on paint color choice has helped tremendouslly. I have also purchased a lot of lamps in the last two years because of you.

  39. Alice Byrne says:

Hi Maria, i was thinking about how long I’ve been following you…. It must be at least 15 years or so. I remember reading through all of your previous posts that weekend because i was immediately hooked!

  40. Sheila Rowan says:

I have been following you about 4 years. My favorite lesson, believe it or not, has been TODAY’S, because I am getting ready to update an old bathroom, and I didn’t even know that I knew nothing about choosing grout; I guess it can be hard to know what you don’t know!

  41. Pat Kanz says:

Happy Anniversary – I started following you a few months after we purchased a beautiful brick colonial and your advice gave me the confidence I needed to select our den and living room paint colors! (Thank you!)

  43. Shawna Wilde says:

First I’d like to thank you for the many years of making the world a bit more beautiful! I’ve been following you since I decided to update my home, probably 12 years ago. You did a design conference for me and I ended up with the perfect color paint and cabinet paint colors. You’re the best!

  44. Brenda Lewis says:

I have been following you for about 9 years now. Learned many great things over the years but favorite decorating lesson is about the undertones of beiges and how to decorate around pink beige.

  45. annie mccann says:

    Following Maria since 2021.
A room needs a lamp in every corner !!!
The right lamp in the right style with correct shade and lightbulb is brilliant. Positively changes the room in so many ways – makes you want to sit down, enjoy a cup of tea and relax.

  46. Sher says:

I stumbled across you about a year ago through Pinterest. I had been saying that it’s frustrating and so wasteful how society pushes trends for houses and why can’t we just build and decorate in a more timeless way? When I found you and was reading your posts, I got so excited because they resonated so much with me!

  47. Sonja Bermingham says:

Maria, I’ve been following you for over 10 years!!!
    You are an amazing teacher!
My favourite game-changing decorating lesson: You can never have too many lamps!

  48. Laura W says:

I’ve been following since, I think, 2012, but it could be before then. I’m not in the business, nor do I have any design talent myself, but I have learned many things along the way:
    -Boring now equals timeless later.
-Medium wood floors are like blue jeans for your home: they go with everything.
-If you want to incorporate color, do so in paint , furnishings, and accessories, which are much easier and less expensive to change when you get tired of them. Use timeless neutrals on all your hard finishes.

  49. Susan Woodland says:

Can you talk about coastal style? I live in Florida.

    Thank you!

  50. Rebecca says:

I’ve been following you for at least 10 years. I use your advise daily in my job as a kitchen designer in a flooring store. I’m so glad the grey trend is almost gone! My favorite advise is the basic – put colors on a white background when trying to figure out the undertones. That makes it so much easier.

    1
  51. Karen T. says:

Pretty sure I’ve followed you for about 10 years. Bought your ebooks and the previous neutral colour wheel and have used it all extensively. The best decorating lesson for me was about lamps. Although I’d had a reasonable amount of lamps in my house, the numbers and types grew after that and I have lots of them on timers. I love seeing dark corners dimly lit in early evening when I come in the house.

  52. Amanda C says:

Your color theory posts/videos are what got me hooked. So easy to pick a blue paint color once I could find the common undertone in our furniture and carpet. I have rewatched many vids. Hard to pick just one!

    • Amanda C says:

Oh and I’ve been following you for the last two years. My sister shared your content with me. 🙂

  53. Lynn says:

Maria- I found you by serendipity about 9 months ago. I was scrolling through YouTube videos by designers who only spoke about gray or white and the latest trends. Then I saw a video you had posted about my 2 favorite things- color and a traditional house. The marathon YouTube watching of your videos began! I subscribe to your blog and have purchased your undertones bundle- undertones are still somewhat a mystery to me, but I’m getting there. Congrats on your 17 years of helping people add color and beauty to their lives!

    1
  54. Julie Kowick says:

I’ve been following you for around 7 years, we were building a new home and totally bought into your ideas of keeping major finishes timeless. I always look at colors and try to determine their undertones, getting it right more frequently!

    • Susie B says:

I have been following you for 7 years and love all your advice. The most important advice for me has been to choose classic hard finishes, especially back splash tile which is not easy to replace!

  55. Heather Pasterski says:

I have been following Maria for
About a year now. I think my favorite lesson so far has been from your Create your Dream home course… color matching finishes using the color wheel! We are in the process of building and your guides and lessons from this course have been my choices easy and focused!

  56. Wendy says:

‘ve been following for at least 16 years ( I checked and that’s how long I’ve been getting your emails) so practically since the beginning. I’ve learned so much and have significantly enhanced my relationship with color under your guidance as well as my confidence choosing colors. I feel fortunate to have finally been able to purchase an e-design package for our recent kitchen remodel, which turned out fantastic! Congrats on your blogiversary.

  57. Sharon says:

Congratulations on your anniversary! I’ve been following you since the beginning. I also took your Master class in Chicago and received your first trial color wheel. Throughout the years, there has been so many lessons and they are all valuable in creating a timeless home. If I had to choose one it would be: “Every decision is a color decision.”

  58. Tosh Primrose says:

Hi, I’ve been following Maria just about as long as she started. I waa looking for ideas after moving into our new home that needed to be updated. I suppose one of my favorite lessons was about a timeless white kitchen. I’ve never really considered white, but, we have one now!

  59. Susie B says:

I have been following you for 7 years and love all your advice. The most important advice for me has been to choose classic hard finishes, especially back splash tile which is not easy to replace!

  60. Cheryl says:

I have been following you since you started your blog. You did a paint colour consult with us when you were working at Benjamin Moore in North Vancouver. You mentioned you were starting a blog, game me the information and I started to follow.
The biggest lesson I have learned is to keep all the major decision boring which equals timeless.

    1
  61. Sara says:

I have been reading your blog and watching videos for about four years now and my favorite lesson has been your advice on lighting. I am using lamps more now and with our large windows, I do not often need the overhead lights. Our home feels more comforting and inviting for my husband and kids!

  62. Elizabeth says:

I have been following you since my house flooded in February, 2021. You saved my sanity- and my family is forever grateful to you for hauling me through the repairs.
My favorite tip- your floor should be like your favorite pair of jeans. That totally solved my problem.

  63. Liz R says:

I’ve been following you since about 2018. Learning your undertones system has transformed how I approach decorating.

  64. Janet Quinlevan says:

Been following you for about 2 years
Favorite decorating lesson is on how to chose a paint color❤️

  65. Patti Ehrlich says:

Maria—It has been at least 12 years since I discovered you and I only wish I would have been on board for the whole 17!

I think your advice on “bossy” tile, countertops, fireplace material (basically “hard finishes”) etc, has resonated the most with me and my house is living proof. I now subscribe to the “boring is timeless” philosophy!

  66. Lisa says:

I’ve been following your blog from nearly the very beginning!
My favorite lessons have been understanding undertones.its been a game changer!
We are finishing a whole house renovation and what I’ve learned from you has guided so many choices and has allowed me to create a home I love!

    1
  67. Sarah Russell Crow says:

Happy Halloween-eeversary! I’ve been following you since 2019 after an instructor mentioned your blog as being a great one (and 🇨🇦 to boot). My favourite advice besides undertones is boring now timeless later. So grateful for finding you and all the wisdom you share in your blog 🥰🙏🏻🎃

  68. Martha Foss says:

I’ve been following you for about eight or nine years since we just built our last house now we are downsizing and moving to an over 55 community and I will be using your ideas and rules for my new home!! I quote you all the time boring now is timeless later!

  69. Linda Stryker says:

A 4-year follower. Buying you color wheel and paint boards was the best investment I made before painting my new to me house. Also, understanding that timeless is NOT boring. Enjoy your blog and advice. Thank you!

  70. Nathalie says:

2019! I started following you as I was muddling through a kitchen renovation, you helped me immensely! Years later, I still love my choices and am easily adapting my white kitchen to the current warmer trends. Love your content and recommend it to all my friends!

  71. Debra Provost says:

Hi Maria – I found you on the internet in 2016. I have been following you ever since!
At that time, we were building a small second home and I needed to select paint color for the walls. (My husband fired the interior designer!)
The most important lesson for me was the undertones of beige, gray and taupe. What a foundational concept. Thank you!

  72. Christian says:

Happy Anniversary, Maria! I’ve followed you since 2017. The best advice I’ve take is how to maximize my kitchen remodel budget by designing around a bossy tile floor and letting that be my one pattern.

  73. Gordon Howard says:

I’ve been following you Maria since the beginning when I was googling the internet for beige paint colours and found you (2008?). After we had new white kitchen cabinets installed in 2012 (at that time you always said they were timeless and I couldn’t agree more I still love them )After which you visited our home to help choose a whole house paint colour that best suited our countertop and tile etc. Bought all your ebooks and large colour boards..your the best. Gordon & Pat Howard -Burnaby BC

  74. shelly says:

I’ve been following along since 2020. I’ve learned so much! Boring now is flexible later. Match your undertones to hard surfaces. When you have mismatched undertones, distract the eye. Trends are for easily changed items not for hard surfaces. Decisions need to be made together, not one at a time. …

  75. Lois says:

Happy happy blogiversary! So GLAD I found you, but it has been so long that I don’t remember HOW I found you. It has been more than eight years. Most important tips…hard to pick just one. Undertones, especially of the hard or hard-to-change elements; lamps in all the corners; boring = timeless; layers; color proportions.

  76. I first found you about 4 or 5 years ago. My favorite design tip from you is the realization that the permanent fixtures in your home should go with the architecture of the home and then you can mix styles and interest in the decor, like with a more trendy light fixture, for example. It makes “timeless” so much easier to understand and implement.

  77. Mary Beth says:

I apologize for the multiple posts. I kept receiving an error message so I thought they weren’t going through.

  78. Laurie Peterson says:

I’ve only been following you for about a year and a half, but I have learned so much! I especially enjoy your lessons about choosing timeless finishes that you’ll love forever. I have shared your videos with many friends. Thank you for being a voice of reason in a field ruled by tends.

    1
  79. Kathy Northrup says:

I have been following you since 2012 when I was sidelined by a car accident and had time to look at the stack of magazine clippings I had stashed.
One clipping from Style at Home magazine was about your Colour Me Happy blog, and I was hooked.
My favourite Maria Killam lesson is “boring now equals timeless later”.

  80. Fran W. says:

Congrats on your blog anniversary, Maria! Here’s to the next 17!!!

  81. Janice Gion says:

Not sure how long I have been following you , but seems like a long time! One piece of advice I have used often is choosing a colorful rug/art piece/ pillow and pulling the colors for the rest of the room from it.

  82. Elaine says:

I have followed you for about 4 years.

And,Lighting! This is one of the top lessons I have learned from you. Want a quick refresh or update? Use lighting! Can’t afford an entire redo? Lighting! Can’t say enough about how valuable this tip has become!

  83. Elizabeth Mann says:

We did my small bathroom about 15 years ago (penny tile floor, subway tile in shower) with all dark grey grout and I think it still looks great. Ten years ago I found Maria and was so glad I had chosen classic finishes! It never occurred to me to use a different grout on the shower walls, but I like the way it looks (and doesn’t show dirt).

  84. Kelly says:

Love that Hallowe’en is your blogiversary, it’s my birthday, I’m 56 today, and your story inspires me to re-imagine my future . . . I’ve been following you for about a year, your advice has helped me with so many projects, but most of all LAMPS! I am a convert! I even bring cute re-chargeable LEDs to dreary spaces I work in to create ambiance, and even the teenagers notice the difference–life changing.

  85. Nicole Lange says:

I found your chanel on youtube and Instagram in February this year, and it has profoundly changed how I view design. The biggest take away for me had been your system of finding the undertones. That first week I bought your colour wheel, and I refer to it constantly. Also, your blogs/reels/posts on timeless design are amazing!

  86. Colter Pence says:

Hi I’ve been following you for about 3 years, I think a somewhat random algorithm driven connection, but thankfully just before i started planning my kitchen renovation, which has lead to other major overhauls that your work has positively influenced. I’ve considered your advice on neutrals, finishes, trends/timeless etc. Maybe not the most sexy of design elements, but my most loved design improvement I adopted from you was adding a lamp to my new addition bathroom. It was dark in one area and the lamp addition is perfect. Maybe I would have stumbled onto that solution eventually but I would have resisted bc I would have also thought a lamp in the bathroom was weird. With your positive energy for lamps, I immediately realized a lamp was the solution, Maria says try adding a lamp, even in the bathroom, and it’s PERFECT. Thank you so much for your work. Hope I’m selected so I can keep learning more (I need to start planning to paint my exterior next year. . . )

  87. Margaret says:

I haven’t been following for more than a year and I don’t remember how I stumbled on your instagram.
Recently I had my colors done and it’s opened my eyes. I always loved colors (never been a gray girl) but I was mixing warms and cools and had no idea what I saw. Found out I was a warm autumn and I’m bringing that knowledge into my decorating. I’ve never been a huge fan of all white or gray . Give me warm all the way! So that’s why I enjoy learning from you.

  88. Arlene Arnold says:

I’m going to guess I’ve been following you since2014 because I purchased
white is complicated and how to choose paint colours in that year. How choosing colour using your colour wheel has been without a doubt, my biggest take takeaway.

  89. Tish Lester says:

    Hi, Maria!
I have been following you for 7 years, now–ever since the day I left the paint choice for the entire enterior up to our GC who told the painter my exact words: “Something off-white or ivory.” Came a week later to an entire house, walls, ceilings, closet shelves, in BM Hepplewhite Ivory! It did not coordinate with any of the hard finishes. I immediately Googled how to pick paint colors, and found you! Favorite blog post is difficult, as they are all amazing. I love the quizes! “What’s wrong with this bathroom?” exercises.
Thank you for helping so many many people!

  90. Geri Grindal says:

Been following you for a few years. You have taught me so much about colour theory and how to figure out the beige undertones. Live your colour wheel.

  91. Debra Tabain-McCormack says:

Love your timeless styles! I’m a retired school teacher, I taught high school Art classes for 41 years in LA. CA. So many of my friends and family ask me why my furniture pieces and decor look so great over the years. It’s because the main pieces are timeless!!!! And I love to pop color and texture with throws and pillows, and most important “lamps”! I have followed you now for about four years and you always put a smile on my face watching and listening to all your wonderful and very professional lessons on timeless beauty. Thanks for all your inspiration 💖

  92. Pam says:

I started following you before you bought the first house in Chilliwack (sp). I found you as I was looking for a colorful designer and you are! It has been so fun watching you!
    Thank you!

  93. Jennifer Labrecque says:

I was told about you by a friend about 1.5 yrs ago. I have learned SO MUCH!!! But the most impactful thing I have learned is about undertones. I feel like I could always choose almost the perfect color, but often would be just slightly off and now I understand why. I am always eager to learn more and would love your bundle. Thanks for educating me! Jennifer from Calgary

  94. Joelyn says:

Hi Maria, I have been following you for about 2 years, maybe 3. Love your advice and insight into colour. My favourite decorating lesson so far: lamp shades – how to pick the right size and to choose cream/off-white.

  95. Leone Dyson says:

I’m not sure exactly how long I’ve been following but definitely since the early days. 15 years? 🧡

  96. Mary Duffy says:

Hi, Maria. I’m a recent follower, but I’m making a study of your blog posts, reading one after another as I gradually style our new home. I’ve keyed in on the bathroom posts and YouTubes as we’re adding on a much-needed bathroom to our thousand square foot house.
What I like most is your emphasis on timeless design. Although I’m tempted by some of the tile trends out there, I’m trying to choose materials that will hold their appeal for years to come.
Thanks for your wise (and money-saving) advice. Please keep the blog posts coming…Blogging is not dead!

    1
  97. Jessica Brokaw says:

Lamps! I’ve added 19 lamps to my house since March 2025!!! I’m addicted to lamps like shoes now! I will need a garage for lamps soon!

  98. Anna says:

Been following for 16 years!!! Love the blog and all the wise counsel over the years. Maria’s teaching of undertones changed my perspective, and has helped me choose my neutrals!

  99. Bet says:

Goodness, I’m not sure exactly how long I’ve been following you. My guess is at least 12 years.
The best advice from you is there is never enough lamps. The difference is night and day. I love the ambiance that lamps give to a room!

  100. Linda F says:

I’ve been following you for about 5 years and your advice is terrific! Learning about undertones has been the biggest game changer for me and I love your color wheel.

  101. Kimberly Miller says:

    Hi Maria!
I’ve been following you since Aug of 2024. And have been hooked ever since.
My favorite decorating lesson has been how to decorate shelves – I’ve got several Ove just lined up a bunch of books on due to not knowing how to buy or layer art on those things. I’m working on it 🙂
    Happy Blogiversary!!!
With a dash of yellow ☀️

  102. Katie Schmitz says:

Hi Maria! I’ve been following you for 6 years. So many great lessons learned! I think one of my most favorite is “boring now means timeless later”.

  103. Cindy Bailen says:

    Maria, dear
I have followed you almost since the beginning. As a color consultant, I could always see the undertones but you gave me the language to talk about them. When I was a journalist writing about home design, I used to write abou your work.Thank you for everything you do for those of us who love color.

  104. Terri Reynolds says:

Started following you 7 years ago. I’ve learned a lot about pale neutrals. Dueto fires nearby, had to replace all soft stuff, your color boards have helped me, it’s been overwhelming but now I’m ready to finally decorate. This would help ALOT!Happy 17th Anniversary ! Thank you!

  105. Elizabeth says:

Beautiful Maria, thank you for teaching us how to make our worlds beautiful – both inside and outdoors. I found you two years ago when we purchased a new (older) home. I binged all of your videos and blogs, bought your neutral color wheel and from that created the prettiest, timeless, well lit, and colorful little house ever!

  106. I’ve been following you for past handful of years. I’m now are hardcore timeless advocate ☺️ I have 3 houses I’m trying to remodel and redecorate on a budget…hardest work there is😜 Thank you for helping me on my journey…I’m still knee deep in mistakes 😂

  107. Michelle Hetu says:

    Happy Blogiversity Maria!
I found you not long after designing and custom building our mostly barrier free home just outside of Sherwood Park, AB in 2012. I’ve recommended your blog to others when doing a Reno. I’ve rarely missed one of your new posts, referred back to older posts, and bought your paint samples. I’ve been tempted to attend a course but never quite got there. I guess you’d call me a quiet follower. I do love design. Keep up the great advice. You provide the clarity that helps me make the right decisions.
    With appreciation,
    Michelle

  108. Linda Joseph says:

I’ve been following you for about ten years, maybe longer, back when you were using Colour Me Happy.
You’ve taught me so much over the years to the point where friends are asking me to help choose colors for their homes, even though I am NOT a designer, but simply put your advice to work throughout my own home in each remodel or painting updates.
Thank you for coming into my life and making me colour-happy in my home.

  109. Cass says:

I believe I’ve been following for four to five years. My favorite? Every post you make! 🤩But the understanding undertones was the clincher for me. Purchased the color wheel soon after. Really value the mood board course as well. Thank you for all you and your team put together , and make available.

  110. Maria Friesen says:

I’ve been following you for about 3 years now. We’re just starting a main floor reno and I’ve been rewatching your vidoes for help! The biggest thing I’ve learned from you is boring now equals timeless later.

  111. BC Gogue says:

Hi Maria. I have been following you for three years purchasing your color wheel ebooks and joining as the community decorator group. We bought a new house and was so grateful to know how to select cabinets, countertops flooring and tile. I came out of the Tuscan trend and really did not want white but kept to your rules. Even the designer at the design center was pushing us to get black cabinet hardware and other things and we did not follow her. We are so glad we found your channel. I read and view everything you publish. Keep on posting and publishing. Warms regards

  112. Constance Martin says:

Hi Maria🙂 I started following you about 4 years ago, I think.. I bought both your full sets of large colour boards (SW & BM) because I knew you were on to something with your Killam Colour system, especially re: undertones. I’d just moved into my 1880, 1.5 story log infrastructure house with REALLY deep windowsills which means little natural light. Your idea of lamps in every corner as the ideal really encouraged me.. because I can do that! Thanks so much! I love your colourful outfits and decorating.. It makes me bolder!

  113. Kerry says:

    Hi Maria,
I’ve been following you since early 2022. I took your color course, have many of your e-books and color boards. Undertones is the greatest takeaway for me. I now understand color and can talk my clients through color choices confidently.

  114. Amy Hales says:

Follower for 5 years now. Before learning from you I had major decision paralysis when picking paint colors. It’s so much easier to narrow it down and know that I’m going to love the end result!

  115. Cindy Borges says:

About 2 years. And of course, the Killim Color Method and Color Wheel. And discovering the undertones!

  116. Barry says:

I have been following you for about two years now. As a guy with a marketing background, I do have a pretty good sense of design. Watch all your videos and took your advice for my kitchen reno. Did the classic white subway tile for my backsplash and did a new countertop in a very subtle pattern. I think they both tie in beautifully and are classic look. Used your colour wheel to choose a paint for the walls in my condo and I love it! And that’s all that matters! Thanks for all your great suggestions.

  117. Larissa Illingworth says:

I just started following you a few months ago after discovering your YouTube channel. I am so grateful – as we are picking finishes for our forever home and I have changed many of them since reading your e-books! Your e-books were incredibly helpful, particularly for kitchen and bath finishes!! Thank you!!

  118. Joan Rosen says:

There are how many variations of white??? I thought it would be simple – pick a white and paint my hallway. After 10 different pots of white, I turned to google and thank goodness, I found you! It’s been years of reading and following your advice. I have your original color wheel and purchased some of your e-books. I find that I hear your voice when friends ask for advice. I’m no expert, but so glad that you are! You’ve helped me, and now my friends, so many times. Thank you for your sound advice. Here’s to many more years of colorful wisdom!

    1
  119. Anne-Marie Petersen says:

Not exactly sure how long I have been following you, maybe close to 10 years but my mother has been referring to you for much longer than that! I really do like the lamp lesson and swiss cheese lights. Now waiting on when/where my forever home will be to design/decorate it!

  120. Char says:

Congratulations Maria! 17 years is a long time and my….have you grown your business! I’ve been following you for about 10 of those years and am a big fan. Keep it up as you help me in so many ways to enjoy my home.

  121. Julie Norval says:

Maria, I’ve been following you for a few years. I always look forward to your posts.

  122. Paulette Kinnan says:

I found you a year and a half ago, so unfortunately for me, after a kitchen remodel that I wish I had made some different selections. My favorite things you have taught me are: one pattern in your hard finishes and that white and ivory/off white in tile and counters are not boring – they are timeless.

  123. Bess says:

Can’t remember how long it’s been since I started to follow you but I’m grateful that I found you. I immediately purchased your color wheel, a couple of your on line reading courses and the color boards. The most helpful thing I’ve learned is that color must be compared to learn the true undertone. As the old saying goes, a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing, and boy have I learned that the expensive way. I keep dreaming of attending one of your courses in person because nothing beats hands on learning. Plus it looks like so much fun too!

  124. Regina says:

I dont actually remember when I started following you. It was before the house you are in now, but just barely. I knew all neutrals didnt go to gether but it was your color wheel lessons that made colors make sense to me.
Starting my 2nd new build and am in love with your classic home style. …. and fashion style👍

  125. Stephanie C says:

I’ve been following you for about a year now. Started as we were buying our 1980’s monster of a project! So limiting that we can only pick one favorite lesson…. I’ll start with learning how to spread the wealth and that not everything has to go. We used this strategy in our kitchen. Kept the perimiter cabinets and redid the counter tops and island. The island has a great color that flows into our family room and pulls from out art. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Timeless classic is soooo much easier than trendy. Thanks for all that you share!

  126. Rhonda says:

I have been following for 8 years. This grout blog was eye opening but my aha moment was coordinating the kitchen and fireplace tile. Love it all, thank you for all the knowledge

  127. Bronwyn Cormican says:

I’m so happy for you Maria! You had a passion for color, persevered and now you are reaping the rewards for your efforts. And even better yet many people including myself are learning from you how to create timeless beautiful homes. Kudos to you 🎉

  128. Therese Vermette says:

Maria it seems I have been following you for 13 or so years. You came to my house to help me choose a bedroom paint colour and two hours later with copious notes on what else to do in the house . Your deep voice surprised me at first since the blog until then was silent. I have your books, bought a few kits on colour comparaisons and a new build/ renovation how to. Oh yes I painted the whole inside of our house after you visited even when that was not what you came to consult on.
Best lesson has been that you don’t need a bunch of «  look at me » items to make a room sing.

  129. Sheree L says:

Happy Blogiversary, Maria! I’ve been following you for 10 years. My favorite decorating lesson so far is learning about all the various undertones of beige. But honorable mention goes to choosing timeless hard finishes and adding color and personality through styling! Thank you for sharing your talents with us, Maria. I love your blog!

  130. Kimberly Wright says:

Hi Maria, I’ve been a follower since 2011, when I went to the internet seeking advice on a kitchen cabinet color for our remodel. I was so hooked I even attended your course in Toronto in 2012, and was a volunteer helper at another in 2016. I became a kitchen and bath designer in 2018, and still pull out your large samples for my clients. My favorite thing I’ve learned from you is still understanding undertones! I still use your language every day. Happy blogoversary to you! And hello to Terreeia!

  131. Cindy M says:

I returned to IG March 2025 after many years. I found you and started following about 4 months ago when signed contract for a new build to start next month hopefully.
The first/foremost has been your color theory and beige undertones, and white paint information. I have watched many hours of your videos and find all very enlightening! Not able to afford your seminars but finally ordered the color wheel & ebook bundle. Think you are incredibly talented in your field and thank you for sharing your
    knowledge.
    Thanks from Mississippi,
    Cindy

  132. Dianne Luke says:

I’ve been following for three or four years. Since we moved into our new-to-us home two years ago, I’ve really dug into all of your great content. It’s hard to pick one thing- I have drunk the Kool-aid on lamps. Last weekend, my daughter declared me a lamp-addict. 100% guilty! Best wishes for the next 17 years and beyond.

  133. Michelle says:

    Hi Maria!
I have been following you for ten years! During our house renovation I bought the Classic Kitchen +Fireplace Package AND a Paint/Fireplace Package for our basement family room. You are my decorating hero! It’s so difficult to pick out only one thing that I’ve learned, but I’d have to say that allll of my decorating decisions follow your saying that “Boring today means timeless forever!” Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!❤️

  134. I’ve been following for 3 years when I started our new build! Your tips saved me from so many mistakes! My favorite tip is finding the undertones of neutrals– seems like common sense, but not very common to me.

  135. Arlene Kaufman says:

Not sure how long it’s been.. 5 years? I’ve learned a lot. And now I have way more lamps, and coziness, than ever before. 😊

  136. Mary says:

Followed you for more than 12 years and love your blogs and advice. It’s a real treat getting your emails. A bit like getting my weekly comic delivered when I was about 9!
Grout! The shower floor tile in my new bathrooms was grouted with a horrible dark brown grout. The tiles are
various sized and colored beige circular tiles so the grout’s very visible when wet and only lightens a bit when dry. Luckily I went back to the tile place and got a lighter grout for the second bathroom. I love the bathrooms but hate the dark brown grout in my bathroom I’d have them pulled and done again if I could afford it.

  137. Carey Gregg says:

I don’t remember exactly when I started following you, but it’s been a few years. At least 3 or 4. We are about to (in the next year or so) put our 25-year-old house on the market (so will need to do a few updates without spending a ton on a house we’ll be leaving behind) and then build our “empty nester” home, where I’ll really want to be able to employ timeless ideas so we don’t have keep re-doing while incorporating my own style, which I can always see in mind but often struggle to pull off. I don’t know if it’s my favorite, but the lesson that’s stuck with me is that white brick houses with black windows are on their way out after having their moment and that black windows can look a bit soulless if not done right. The same month you were posting about all that, no less than four people on my block were in the process of changing over to white houses with black windows, and I’d take my daily walk and go, “Yep. I totally see it. Maria is SOO right!”

    1
  138. Terry Davis says:

Happy anniversary! I’ve been following for three years and have learned so much! Thank you! My favorite so far has been about warm neutrals.

  139. Tyler Lawson says:

I have been following you for three years after stumbling on your TikTok posts. Earlier this year I bought your color wheel which helped me match my new bedding to the right beige for my guestroom. Thank you for helping me to only paint the room once and get the right result.

    1
  140. Fran M says:

My house would be a disaster without you ❤️

  141. Sandy says:

I believe I’ve been following you since 2020!! Thanks for all the free tips you give to your followers. I’ve learned to much.

  142. Karen MacMahon says:

I found you last month! We are replacing our bathroom vanity and I love how you say it’s ok to work with what you have vs ripping it all out. It’s given me confidence to continue making my humble home the best it can be for us.
My favourite is what you’ve saying about all the black. Ps I love your home!

  143. Sandy says:

I e been following you for 5 years. Thanks for all the tips and advice provide for free! I’ve learned so much.

  144. Carla Strand says:

I have been following you since around 2011, bought your ebooks! Undertones!

  145. Cindi S says:

I’ve been following Maria since 2020. My favorite advice is, of course, that we all need more lamps! Plus, any post that talks about undertones has really helped me see what works and what doesn’t.

  146. Lynne McKiernan says:

I have been following you for about five years. I got the most use out of your color wheel and color boards when I renovated a condo I was selling. It turned out beautiful and received many offers over the listing price.

  147. Tara Percle says:

I have been following for 2 years . Love several things but love your Ebook on choosing the right white. During my bathroom and kitchen renovation I was so confident in picking my cabinet color. You made it so EASY for me!!

  148. Kare H says:

I’ve followed you for just about a year, but wish I had found you years ago.
There isn’t a lesson that hasn’t given me new, inspired thoughts. Two that have provided me with already well-used guidance involve refreshing bathrooms and the use of lamps. But then there is giving attention to undertones, drapes, …
    Thank you, Maria!

  149. Melissa Doonan says:

I’ve been following you since 2022 when I needed to paint my house. My favorite decorating lesson has been boring now equals timeless later. And more lamps will give you the look and feel that color alone can’t give.

  150. Tina Harker says:

I’ve been following you since I bought land 5 years ago! I took your weekend homeowners course and loved it. Honestly that has saved me money and retained my mental health with this process 😂.

    1
  151. Gail Rees says:

Congratulations Maria! I have been following you for many years, not sure exactly how many. I am a big fan. I bought your books and got the original colour wheel you offered for free. I love colour and also have a yellow sofa. My favourite tip I have implemented is lamps, lots of lamps! I am your follower that sent you a link to find a new doctor. Keep shining and being your joyful self. Thank you for all the information you share with us your faithful followers.

  152. Hale Lydia says:

I’ve been following you for a little over a year. We are getting ready to break ground on our dream home this week! Only about 9 months later than expected! I signed up for your 2day Build Your Dream Home online course, because I was already hooked from reading your blogs and watching your videos. I love them all! Couldn’t pick just one!

  153. Laura Boland says:

I’ve been following you for a little over 2 years. You had just bought your new house!
The main thing I learned from you is kitchen countertops and backsplashes should be timeless and not show off your artsy side! Fixed elements need to be timeless and not trendy. Thanks!

  154. I wish I could say I have been following you for years… but I am a NEWBIE. I just recently found you when searching for color videos. I found color videos and bonus videos on bathroom tile and grout colors!! Bonus! Adding on to our small 1000 SF cottage and you have given me sound decorating advice! I want to do penny tile in my next bathroom for sure. I’m in love with vintage traditional style.

  155. Teri Praill says:

I have been following for a 3 or 4 years. I love to see what you are wearing, so colourful, I mostly wear black lol
I have learned that I don’t have enough lamps, and I have added a few since that’s an easy tip that I can follow. I got your colour wheel, and I bought something about shopping on line and something else but I haven’t read those yet, you make it sound so easy!

  156. Regina says:

Had some issues earlier. But. I dont know exactly when I started following you. It was before your current home but not long before. The journey with you has been so fun for me. My ah-ha moment was when you taught how to youre your color wheel. I KNEW not all neutrals played nice with one another , but didnt know WHY. I purchased a wheel and it has been great for my home projects. Getting into my 2nd new build I feel I have better knowledge to make correct color choices. I am excited to select “Timeless” choices this go around 😍

  157. Dolores Organ says:

I have been reading and watching your videos since before you moved into your bungalow. I love your focus on timeless rather than trendy for the beauty and because it saves money and prevents waste of materials. I also find your advice leads to happy surroundings and colours. Thank you Maria, for all the fun and the learning

  158. Gaile Nagle says:

I think I’ve been following you for about 10 years. Favorite lesson learnt is no trendy hard finishes. I’m a subway tile girl through and through now 🤣
Congratulations on your 17 year anniversary ❤️

  159. Kayla Almon says:

I’ve been following you since January this year! My favorite thing I’ve learned is neutral undertone. Once I ordered your color wheel everything made so much sense! I also loved the video you did recently on decorating if undertones don’t match!

  160. I’ve been following you for 12 years – since I went in search of the perfect interior paint and got hooked on undertones. You did a color solve on my mom’s kitchen once and saved us tons of $$ and headaches. You inspired me to become a decorator after retiring from teaching college history. Quite an undertaking for a now 70-year-old. Thank you! You’re an inspiration!

    1
  161. Diane Trembly says:

Hi! I’ve been following you for about three years. I love what I’ve learned about lamps and decorating, but more importantly, how undertones can be identified. My top favorite thing I’ve learned though is how important it is to have timeless designs to save money and worry in the long run. I’m learning to recognize myself being pulled into a trend because of seeing things over and over. Thank you for creating the blogs and videos!

  162. Sheila T says:

Maria: I found you in 2014 and I became convinced that I need to take your TCE training. It was the best thing I’ve done for the 5 moves I’ve had in 11 years! Your lessons and advice on flooring, particularly in selecting hardwood floors has been so helpful. Happy blogiversary!

  163. Cindy says:

I’ve been following you for about a year & a half. Your undertones color wheel has been a huge help in decorating. Y home. Thank you for all you share.

  164. Julie says:

I’ve been following you for about 3 years, since I started a kitchen remodel and was lost in making all of the decisions. I have learned so much (and have so much yet to learn), but I think my favorite lesson is “boring now equals timeless later.”

  165. Janet Livengood says:

I’ve been following you for about 5 years. I’ve learned so much from you but the mostly the importance of not using black everywhere and of course lamps, lamps, lamps and no overheads!! Congrats!!

  166. EMMZ says:

Congratulations Maria and team!! What an incredible journey through trends starting out some new and fresh ending up boring, flat and predictable. Yup – love BFP!

My favourite lessons are from completing your True Colour Expert training, although I enjoy all your content especially the one day makeovers.

To many more years of good design, decorating and styling fun with COLOUR!! 🙂

    • EMMZ says:

I’ve been thinking about this more and if I’ve reconsidered certain approaches, etc since I began following you years ago and I think I have. Ive definitely added more lamps and been more mindful of lighting choices. I also try to make my hard finishes more timeless and add flare and interest thorough things that are easier to change. It has definitely made making decisions easier for me as someone who upon occasion over thinks every detail!! “Boring now means timeless later” – chef’s kiss 💋

  167. LA Knapp says:

I’ve been following for about 5 years. Happy blogiversary I’ve learned so many things but my favorite is: lamps, lamps, lamps. Your color wheel has been invaluable when trying to match undertones. Thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge.

  168. Kristine Berryhill says:

I’ve been following you 6 months. Favorites posts are about bathroom tiles

  169. Gale Abello says:

I’ve been following Maria since 2011, and purchased her first Ebook in January 2012. The best design advice I learned was to keep my hard finishes timeless.
    Enjoy your fabulous advice.

  170. Beth Cugal says:

Hello! I’ve been following you since 2018 or 2019 and my favorite decorating lesson has been to install white kitchens and bathrooms. I’m so glad you’re talking about grout because I still have not decided what tile and grout to use in my bathroom reno.

  171. Connie Kaltenback says:

I have only been following you for a short time, 1.5 years probably. Ive learned more from you in that time than from any other source. I did a Reno about 1 year ago and hired a designer for all the reasons you mention. mostly because they know where to spend the money. The most important thing I think Ive learned from you, is that it’s completely OK to shop at HomeSense. Thank you for that!!!!!

  172. Jessica Lewis says:

Color is timeless! I’ve been around since you were in your previous house!

  173. Susan Baker says:

Maria, I have only been following you for eight months or so. I began by binge watching you on YouTube and Instagram. My biggest lesson learned is lamps in every corner of the room and no overhead lighting at night. Thanks to you, I now have to check your Instagram acct daily for the USA Lamp of the Day. I am always on the hunt for lamps. You have opened my eyes. I notice all lamps everywhere. Before you, lamps were an afterthought in my decorating. That’s so nuts. Thank you for seventeen years of blogs.

  174. Kimberly Forrest says:

    Hi Maria,
I have only been following you for three years but it seems like you’ve been adding inspiration and fun for longer. I made some updates to my kitchen last year. Your guidance in selecting timeless finishes was so valuable!

  175. Laurie Simon says:

I have been following you at least ten years. My favorite lesson has been learning timeless tile and fixtures.

  176. Laurie S says:

Maria, I have been following you at least ten years. My favorite lesson has been learning timeless tile and fixtures.

  177. Allison Crabtree says:

I found your Instagram about eight months ago, right at the time I was beginning a remodel of my home. So much great advice. Thank you!

  178. Allison Jeffries says:

I’ve been following your account for two years, and because of you, I now understand the true power of lamps. Thank you for all your design guidance, Maria!

  179. Rebecca Parker says:

Thank you for sharing your gift with all of us!!!!!! I stumbled on you and then my daughter went to one of your courses in Dallas and I’m just SMITTEN with you!!!!!

  180. Rebecca Parker says:

Thank you for sharing your gift with all of us!!!!!! I stumbled on you and then my daughter went to one of your courses in Dallas and I’m just SMITTEN with you!!!!! Thanks so much

  181. Jeanne Larson says:

    Congrats!
I’m a long time follower -maybe 10 or 12 years? I’ve purchased your ebooks and a color wheel and refer to them often!

  182. Debra says:

I’ve been following you for at least 6? years … since before the pandemic for sure. The biggest and ongoing lesson for me is undertones. I love watching you do your magic in the makeovers!

  183. Laura Snyder says:

I’ve been following you for at least 5 years. My favorite advise has been to add color small, medium and large items. Also classic hard finishes! Love being able to update decor without a major remodel!!!

  184. Mary U says:

3 mos. Favorite is the black and white trend and why it became so popular during covid. Makes so much sense!!

  185. Theresa says:

My favorite thing I’ve learned from you is to buy more lamps! Also learning about undertones.

  186. Jane says:

i have been enjoying your blog for 5 years. i love your sergments on “How to Love your Home Forever”.So many nuggets.

  187. Colette H. says:

I’ve been following you for two or three years and my favorite decorating lesson has been MORE LAMPS! I’ve throughly embraced that concept and now the days are shorter I run around turning on lamps as soon as I get home from work. And by the way, choosing just one favorite decorating lesson was not easy (undertones, decorate then choose paint, and so on)

  188. Kim says:

I’ve only been following you for a short while but your Understanding Undertones Neutral Colour Wheel has helped me so much in just a few short weeks. We are purchasing a new build that allows very little input on what finishes are best. We got to choose floors and backsplashes. The wheel made me confident with the selections. Repainting the white walls is next but I am not afraid 😀 Thank you!

  189. Patricia Cresswell says:

    Happy Anniversary Maria.
I have been following your blog for at least 12 years.
My favourite decorating lesson after becoming aware of undertones in neutrals is the necessity of Lamps!!!
Oh the Joy of Lamps and auxiliary lighting!!! Even putting a lamp (with a cord)on a table!!

Thank you Maria!! Here’s to many more years of teaching and sharing your insight and wisdom.

  190. Janet Bergeson says:

Maria I’ve been following you for a lot of years, can’t really remember but at least 10 and I’ve learned so much by reading your blog posts, your questions of the day, your instagram stories. Now I see undertone everywhere, even tonight as I was out trick or treating with my two little grandsons, seeing exterior of houses with stone and then gray paint slapped up against it🫣

    Thanks

  191. Lisa Glass says:

I’ve been following you for about 8 years and have learned so much from you about color undertones. I knew nothing about this before discovering your blog! I started consulting on paint colors 6 years ago and can truly say that your advice has helped me confidently choose the right colors for my clients.

  192. Amy Slowik says:

I have been faithfully following Marie since 2015 when I moved into a new house and was trying to figure out why I didn’t like the paint colors that a color consultant recommended for my house. My favorite lesson is clean vs dirty—I cannot “not see it” now!

  193. Tina says:

I think it’s bee about 2 years between Instagram, YouTube and your blog. Love your home and the way you put your wardrobe together…

  194. Jill Shirk says:

Been following I believe for 1 1/2 yrs I believe. Wish I would have found you sooner!!!!!

  195. Dottie M says:

You are the green-thumb of color and styling. You can bring any dead room or house back to a beautiful life. I have learned so much in the eleven years I have followed you. My favorite lesson is that if you can’t tell when a house was built or a room redone, it is timeless. “Boring now means timeless later” is so true. Thank you for sharing so much with us!

  196. Melanie says:

I’ve been following you for 12 or 13 years, I think. I’ve learned so much in that time that it’s hard to pick, but I think I’d say it’s clean vs. dirty.

  197. Monica Malone says:

Congratulations on 17 years! I’ve been following you since 2012. In 2013 , we were building our new home. I’ve learned a lot, but my favorite advice would be “pay attention to the undertones the light.” (Yes. I stuck two together, because there really is no way to choose.) Honorable mentions to “clean vs. dirty” and that medium brown wood floors are like jeans. I could list many more.(Yes, I have three fan decks … that was another HUGE Maria tip and game changer.) I have been studying architecture, furniture, and design since I was 15 … in the colorful 80s. You have a gift for distilling your expertise into the perfect way for others to understand, code to memory, and recall. Congratulations and best wishes always! (

  198. Elizabeth urban says:

Contrast is the best piece of design.

  199. Sheree Jones says:

I have been following you for at least 5 years. Your guidance has helped me through updating my last home to decorating my new home. I couldn’t have done it without you!

  200. Phyllis Dobbins says:

Hi and happy anniversary. I’m so grateful for you sharing so much amazing insight about design and decorating. I’ve been following you for a couple years. I’ve picked up so many tips about timeless design but my favorite is understanding undertones and your color wheel.

  201. Jill Borrego says:

I’ve been following you for about two years now. I love your design style and your approach to being direct. I really enjoyed your lesson on picking a timeless wood floor.

  202. Brenda Hurst says:

Pretty certain I’m nearly a Lifer” at 15+ years.May actually be the full 17.

My favorite advice from you that has never failed me is that “boring is often beautiful”—when it comes to the fixed elements. I’ve done white (or nearly) white subway tile in all my renovated spaces, Some were done long ago… they still look great. Kitchen was just finished and it looks fantastic with its crackle white tile and matching grout. And, despite the shift in kitchen trends, my new cabinetry and all my trim, including windows, are painted BM Chantilly Lace. The room faces west, so it warms up quite a bit in the afternoon, but it still looks fine in the mornings. Thank you, Maria, and congratulations on 17 years! Happy Halloween, too! A

  203. Debra Rubert says:

8 years I have followed you! I love your colour undertones and how to relate them to design!

  204. Linda Frey says:

I’ve been following you a LONG time. Not sure if it’s been 17 years or not but have loved every color wheel demo you’ve ever done and showing why one color is better than another in that situation. It’s really the only color education I’ve ever had!

  205. Kendra Lischynski says:

Only 2 years – thanks to my sister in law. She told me about you.

  206. Margret Evangelista says:

The two most important things I have learned from you are:

    1) boring now equals timeless later. For me that means building a neutral canvas on which I can decorate and redecorate for years to come.
    2) Respect the style of your house and decorate accordingly. I just sold my home of 30 years off market on a handshake in 15 minutes at a very good price, all because I incorporated a whole house palette that repeated design styles and color throughout all of the open floor concept rooms. I am doing the same thing in my new production build with all of your tools now at my disposal. Your color wheel and neutral color boards have come with me everywhere, helping me to create a timeless custom look. I did the first house on my own intuition but your tools and guidance have made this build quicker and easier. So grateful to found you 3 years ago. Thanks so much, Maria!

  208. Stacey L says:

Happy 17! I have been reading for about half the journey, ~8 years. I have learned so much about timeless design and decorating and just as much watching as you’ve re-oriented your business model and offerings over the past several years. One of my biggest lessons has been with a timeless hard finish approach that decorating is the trick to distracting the eye when you can’t rip everything out.

  209. Marg Fundarek says:

I can’t remember how long that I’ve been following your blog but I’d guess at least 10 years.

My favourite is that you can’t have too many lamps. My husband especially loves the lamp that we keep lit on the kitchen counter. I also added one to our mantle in the family room. Our rooms all glow with inviting lamp lights.

I also like your blog about which pillows to put where on your sofa or sectional.

Thanks, Maria, for all of the great useful information you’ve supplied over the years.

  210. Lisa says:

I’ve been following you for at least 8 years. I saw a picture of a room you’d designed with gray and purple and loved it!
So many favorite design tips, but my favorite is using lamps. Thanks!!
    Happy Blogoversary!

  211. Irene Case says:

I don’t recall how long I’ve been following, but bought your color wheel and find it so useful.
I have your exterior planning package too – which my husband and I need to watch !
I love tips you give – like your countertop should coordinate with your flooring. I feel these are things that people who are not in design do not know. Not I do because of you !
My favorite is the 10 Steps to planning a Timeless new build.

  212. Sarah says:

    Hi Maria!
I have been following you for over 10 years and have learned so much from you and your blog. I love the color wheel and the advice always in my mind is “boring” now is timeless later. I have been so happy with my hard finish update choices in our home since learning so much from you and would love the opportunity to learn more. You have saved me from making some “trendy” choices.
    Cheers! Sarah

  213. Tracy Salas says:

I’ve been following you for 5 years. The best advice that I have received from you is that you can never have too many lamps. I have been trying to add more lamps to each of my rooms!

  214. Wendy Lofton says:

    Hi Maria,

I am pretty new follower and have been following you for about three months. I started following you for decorating advice as we’re getting ready to redo our kitchen. I absolutely love your home and your information on how to choose. The right paint color has been very helpful.
I have to say I also love your outfit of the day. I love to see how you put different colors together and make them work. I don’t have an eye for that, but you obviously do. I get lots ideas for outfits from that as well. So you’re a double stop shop. Decorating an outfit advice.

Thank you for providing ideas and inspiration. You brighten my day.

  215. Holly LaCroix says:

Thank you for this post! Regarding choosing gray grout colors for the floor tile grout; I have a violet gray quartz vanity top. Does the undertone of gray grout matter when it comes to classic and timeless design, or will doing a violet gray grout like Mapei pearl gray on my white hex floors date my space and put a nail in the proverbial gray trend coffin? ⚰️🎃

  216. Dawn McCole says:

I have been following you for about 1.5-2 years. I love you approach to things and appreciate your insight. I do not have a favorite I appreciate everything you post.

  217. Maria, I newly discovered you this past year via Instagram. In that time I’ve taken 2 courses, initiated an edesign consultation, and ready for joining your community. Selecting just 1 top strategy is hard from all the tools I’ve learned. However, the understones and considering the hard surfaces has been most significant.

  218. Traci Deleon says:

I have been following you for about a year , started with instagram then started reading your blogs! Your classic timeless design blew my mind wish someone had told me 20 years ago!!
My favorite so far is lamps !!! I didnt realize what I was missing and what a difference they made! I also love the outfit of the day !! So fun!! Thank you Maria!

  219. Melony Sutherland says:

I have been following you since 2018 if I can remember right! Learned a lot about undertones and how to pick paint colours with confidence!! I taken all your courses and enjoyed them all.

  220. Carol Bowman says:

I’m not sure how long I’ve been following you – it’s been many many years, tho. I have always been interested in paint and color theory, so it’s got to be over ten years. As for my favorite lesson – I gravitate toward anything that talks about undertones. Love your posts – thanks for all the guidance you’ve given me over the years!

  221. Mary says:

I have been following you for 7 years. The best lesson I have learned from you is putting a white paper beside an item to identify the correct color. I will be redoing my powder room and will buy lamps so I just started going through your blog and YT. I am so happy to learn from you – choosing tiles, shape of lamp shade. There is more to learn as I go along. Thank you!

  222. Lori Brown says:

I need to hear more about your story! Fired 7 or 8 times. What!!! Clearly you’ve found the right fit now! I’ve been following you for about 10 years.

  223. Tammy says:

I’ve been following you for about eight months now. The biggest takeaway for me so far is that simple, well coordinated quiet finishes, mostly white or cream finishes, are best because they are timeless and versatile. If I use them for the expensive hard finishes, I never have to think about replacing them because they will never look dated.

  224. Kelly W says:

Following since 2021 when I found your blog and then followed links to more posts and hours later…
My favourite lesson is probably around clean and dirty colours. It’s so helpful to bring colours together.

  225. Anne Lepola says:

I have been reading and learning from you for maybe two three years now. Favourite learnings have been the neutral undertones (still learning!) and lots of lamps!

  226. Gari W. says:

I’ve been following you for a few years now.
One thing I’ve learned from you besides finding the right undertone is clean/ dirty. Now I know why certain things look off.

  227. Sally Hill says:

    Good Morning Maria,
I haven’t followed you for very long. However, when I landed on your site I knew we have like minded design choices,
I am a retired hair stylist . With 50 years behind the chair I have seen trends come and go , just to return with a “new” twist. My industry finally came together with a united number system. Incorporating levels of color , light to dark, with second and third tonal values. In your teaching I heard you say the same language.
Good design has similar elements wether it’s applied to hair design ,home decorating , architecture or
    nature.Form followed with color
    and dimension and texture.
    Delighted to have found you!

  228. Juli says:

I think I’ve only been with you 3 years or so. It’s hard to pick a favorite lesson because I have learned so much! Probably the life principle that is my favorite is LAMPS! Every time I see your lamp of the day I think about the lamps on Facebook Marketplace I didn’t buy but might if they are still available!

  229. Rory Walker says:

    Congratulations on another successful year!!!
I have been following for many years and have had many family and friends sign up as well. My best friend just completed her new house with all the advice you have shared online the whole way to the finish line. She was contemplating the new trend with the bathroom marble up the wall with the mirror. Your advice helped avoid that mistake. New builds are so overwhelming and the blog kept her grounded.
Thanks for all you do to keep all of us on the right track.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, my favorite is the color wheel which I use over and over again!!

  230. Kim Ford says:

Been following you for about 6 months and enjoying all your videos. I don’t like Halloween either. Phenomenal fall, yes! The most important lesson I’ve learned is knowing the undertones of paint colors. Thank you for sharing your material and expertise with us. You’re great!

  231. Hannah Pecina says:

I have been following you for the last 3+ years. From just agreeing with everything you’ve had to say immediately and then learning so much and how to apply simple things to every day choices to my home and even what I’m wearing with undertones/color in mind! One of my favorites that I share with everyone is the simple matching of metals in kitchens/bathrooms with a
polished nickel for all plumbing and a simple brass for hardware!! Makes all the difference in the world. Thanks for all of your tips that you share daily!! Always enjoy your perspective.

  232. Amy Fry says:

I’ve been following your for 4 years! My favorite tip from you has been using timeless hard finishes over trendy finishes. Thank Maria!

  233. Millie Batt says:

I’ve been following since the beginning almost. My best guess is mid-year 2009, so approximately 16 years. It’s hard to say which blog post was my favorite. Your teaching about undertones have been eye-opening to me. I think you had one called “White is a Snob” that was very helpful.

  234. Fiona Frazell says:

Hello Maria, I have been following you for two or three years now. It’s hard to pick a favorite lesson, but I might say the advice to get larger lamps. That one tidbit made a big difference in my home! Great tips on the grout, too.

  235. Holly says:

I started following you in the spring of 2021 and bought all your ebooks immediately after Google searching timeless wood flooring. I’ve lived here for 32 years and this was my third kitchen renovation, this time with all new cabinets and countertops. I needed a plan because I could immediately see all the undertones I had gotten wrong with the previous renovations. My best lesson was finding the perfect neutral for my open concept raised ranch home. Wow, what a difference the right “white” can make when it’s not wall primer white and is the right undertone. SW Heron plume is my perfect white and looks beautiful at any time of the day. You have a gift for specifying the right neutral undertones and whites for a space Maria! So glad I discovered you! Happy blogiversary!

  236. Sandy says:

I found you in the early ‘teens when I read a comment on a blog by Atlanta Garden designer Tara Dillard.
Although I agree with the many who say “boring now equals timeless later” is a favorite thing they learned from you, I think “understanding undertones” is even more important. I went back and forth with designers early in my renovation when I objected to the undertones of paint and other choices and they didn’t understand what I meant.
I love it that you not only understand — you have a system!
Thanks for all that you and your team do —

  237. Elizabeth Caldwell says:

I have been following you since 2020 and your colour wheel and books were the biggest lifesaver when we renovated our new house in 2022/2023. I think probably the biggest lesson I learned was that you always compare things and that helps you truly be able to see the colour clearly.

  238. Marísa says:

It was April 2017 when I started following you. That June I discovered your birthday is the same as mine! When you turned 50, I turned 51. Also Canadian but have lived in the States 30 yrs.
One big factor stands out – to be mindful of the “boss” – the stone, inside & out; and avoiding tempting but busy countertop stone.

  239. Barbara Schultz says:

I can’t remember the exact year but I believe 2007. No favorite lesson but I liked the True Color Expert course so much I took it twice.

  240. Karen Martin says:

Hi Maria, I found you only a couple of years ago, unfortunately just after we re-painted our house interior – I think our colour consultant picked great wall colours, but not the right white for the trim. If only I’d had you to guide me! It’s hard to pick a favourite, but I think it would have to be your Mood Board course – so helpful to see my options together before making expensive purchases.

  241. Diane says:

I don’t remember how many years I have been reading your blog, but it started early in your blog career. I think the biggest help to me has been in understanding undertones and having the color wheel for help in buying new fixed elements and being able to coordinate with existing furniture . Thanks for all the advice.

  242. Shannon says:

Maria! I stumbled across your blog around a year ago before we even had a new build planned and loved your style. Now that we are in the beginning stages of a new build, your practical advice and wisdom is even MORE valuable. My favorite decorating lesson is the gradations of white – knowing that there are different families of whites and how to use that to guide our hard finishes choices is incredibly useful. Thank you so much for all the education you share on your blog and in your community!

  243. Feryl says:

Maria, I have been following for over 10 years,
    Congratulation on your 17-year blogiversary!
I also have trouble with the 60-30-10 what really is it?
My favorite decorating lesson has to undertones and LAMPS ! in every corner! making such a big difference. At first I though wow that’s a lot of lamps, no way. While reading your blog and watching you use, different Sades, different Sizes etc. the light went on ( fantastic).
Alway looking forward to starting something new from you .
Looking forward to many more years following you.

    Feryl

  244. Allison Sturgeon says:

I have been following you for about 3 years and I learned a lot from your lamp module. You are right-lamps are a vibe in a room if you have multiple light sources. Happy blog anniversary!

  245. Gillian says:

    Dear Maria,
The oldest email I have is from 2010, so I have been subscribed for at least 15 years. I bought your “How to choose colour ebook” several years ago. I have learnt so much, but I think the best lesson is “Colour is more timeless than the latest trendy neutral”. This has definitely steered my way of thinking, and to be honest, if there is less area covered by neutrals then clashing undertones are hopefully less obvious! I am still in the process of trying to turn everything in my house that was beige when we bought it, into blue. Gillian

This has encouraged me in my plan to turn everything in my house that was beige when we bought it, into my favourite colour, blue. (Hopefully clashing undertones will also be less obvious if the area of neutrals is smaller.)

  247. Ann M says:

I’ve been following you for about 10 ish years. I hired you/your team for an e-design for a whole house reno. Your insights guided many of my choices at a time where I was really really really overwhelmed!! I think this video above is hugely helpful!

  248. Debbie says:

Hi Maria, I have been following you for approximately 8 years. I have learned many things from you. But my favorite lesson is all about the different undertones of the color white. Thanks for all the valuable information.

  249. Winn says:

Its been 6 years of following you! My favorite decorating lesson is Boring equals timeless later!

  250. Winn says:

Its been 6 years of following you. Thanks for taking the guess work out of decorating. The best post has been Boring equals Timeless later.

  251. Josephine Rogan says:

I’ve been following you since August 2024. I live you before and after styling photos, especially where you helped your nephew style his apartment.

  252. Kate Melcher says:

    Hello Maria,
I first discovered you on a Ballard Design podcast. Since then I purchased White is Complicated and read it three times. I’ve watched all of your videos and learned a ton. I am using your neutral colour wheel to help with selections of everything in my brand new future apartment in a retirement community. I am designing it from SCRATCH, right down to placement of electrical outlets! I’ve never been able to afford a professional designer, always done everything myself. So you are a life saver! I have learned so much.. For that I thank you. My favorite lesson I have learned: how complicated white is and that I can’t paint a low lit room bright white..Complex creams will be my salvation in my new apartment. You are a life saver.

  253. Barb Everett says:

Happy Anniversary! Thank you for sharing all of your insights to having a a timeless, classic home. I have been following you since 2015. Your knowledge has helped to make my forever home and a sanctuary of beauty. I have learned so much from you–styling, lamps, and undertones. It’s time for you to compile your thoughts in a book!

  254. Sharon Williams says:

Hi! I’ve been following you for about a year now. I love your style and common sense to style and design.I’ve definitely learned from you and hope to keep learning more. I’d love to be considered to join you for a class!! Live following you.❤️

  255. Joan says:

I have been following you a year or two.
My favorite designing tip is to choose plain, timeless floors, countertops, etc.

  256. I discivered your videos on YouTube around a year or so ago. I watched them all and decided to subscribe to your Blog. Sadly, in 2020, We D.I.Y.’d our kitchen and back entry/mainfloor laundry spaces starting with that 12″×24″, multi-colored(gray/orange beige and cream “bulider grade porcelain tile. Figuring out why my green beige cabinet color and orange beige walls with white trim and brown wood counter is throwing me off after buying your neutral color wheel. Now I am working to discover art to help eliminate the kind of blah I created. Ha! Thanks for the help.Keep it up. Maybe someday you can help me refine some spaces.

  257. Lisa ColemanColeman says:

I have learned that keeping the undertones matched brings the harmony to decorating. I love your OOTD too! You’ve given me courage to wear more color and bold clothing styles!

  259. Jackie says:

    Hi, Happy Anniversary!
I do not remember when or how I found you , but I’m so glad I did! It’s been at lest ten years. Thank you for sharing how to understand color and undertones and all the classic vs. trendy things. I really love your style. You have brought joy into my home. I look forward to each blog!!

  260. Chaviva says:

I have a question- but first, thank you for your guidance! – for the small floor tile with contrasting grout- should we choose epoxy grout ?

  261. Terri Ledlie says:

    Hi Maria
Thank goodness I found you during Covid, when I was planning a large renovation on our house which definitely included black windows and white interior walls. Your advise was sound: avoid these trends!
Because of you and your blog, which I have relished since, I avoided these mistakes, and will now go forward with much more timeless finishes.
    Many thanks

  262. Janelle says:

Congrats on 17 years of the blog!! I’ve been following you for around 8-9 years. It’s hard to pick just one thing but I will go with what timeless is for wood flooring 💕

  263. Carol Johns says:

I have followed you for 10 years now when I bought my house and needed help in decorating around some bad decisions the previous owner made.
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is timeless hard surfaces are the little black dress of decorating.
    Thank you, Maria!

  264. Karyn Woodard says:

I have been following you for at least 12 years! The first post I remember pinning was about hanging curtains high and wide. So simple but so effective! Thank you!

  265. Amy Hitt says:

Hi! I’ve been following you for about 2 years. We have lived in our current home 6 years. I’ve been so afraid to start any major projects because I didn’t know how to choose something I would hopefully love for a very long time. I am not a professional decorator/designer and appreciate how you simplify the information. Your system is a wonderful. I am working on a kitchen renovation and I have watched all the videos and read the blog on anything white kitchen related multiple times. Those lessons have been the most helpful to me as I try to piece this all together.

  266. Janella Spencer says:

Found you when you did the post on everyone painting their houses black and white. Have loved you ever since.

  267. Alison G says:

I found you back when you were talking about colours being clean or dirty – haven’t seen that for a long time but it was so useful – I looked around my house and said “dirty”! And luckily my neutrals were already green beige. It all helped me find the perfect strong, dirty, custom yellow to paint my study and the darkest green (Pompeian Ash from Little Greene) for my snug. A warmer colour for my bedroom is the next choice to make so your posts on the warmer neutrals are a great starting point for that.

  268. Martha N says:

I’ve been following you for 3 or 4 years–not long before you most recent move. I’ve learned to keep all the “bones” timeless and how to distinguish between the different neutrals. Thank you, wishing you at least 17 more years!

  269. Carol says:

I have been following you for about ten years. At the time, we were building an addition DIY onto our home that we are still finishing!! I took a home renovation course with you that was opened my eyes big time on timeless design. Thank you for all you do and congrats on the milestone!

  270. Michelle Szpara says:

I’ve been following for a few years now (we bought our home the same time you bought your current one!) and my favorite styling tip was the different scales of color in styling a room.

  271. Denise Teson says:

Maria, I came across your information with a headline having to do with why does my decorating look off, it’s probably been 6 months.
I have been bingeing on all your Utubes & other media outlets.
I bought your wheel and ebooks. Just finished w/reading it all and taking notes.

  272. Missy says:

I’ve been following you for about a year. The most transformative thing I’ve learned from you is to keep the expensive, permanent features neutral and classic, and thus trend-proof, while bringing life and color into my house with everything else. But my FAVORITE advice from you is that it’s ok that I still love rocking my 25-year-old burgundy sofa. A designer we hired told me last year to toss it because the color was dated – but HA! One of your recent posts now says burgundy is coming back!! 🙂

  273. Donna Garbe says:

I just discovered you a few weeks ago and am sure glad I did! I am updating an entire home we recently moved into. You have so many great tips and lessons that it’s hard to choose just one – so I’ll stick with the foundational principles of understanding neutrals and undertones. You’d have a field day in my home that currently has dark color drenched rooms, faux finishes galore, and no lighting throughout.

  274. Sara Gray says:

Hi Maria! I have been following you for a couple years now. I actually love seeing your outfits of the day, and I think you were probably recommended to me bc we both follow Trinny! Do you use her skin care? I love it! I really enjoyed seeing your home tour, it’s beautiful. I’ve enjoyed your styling videos and frankly everything you share. The way you focus on what is timeless vs trendy is so great! Thanks for your content!

  275. B. Ely says:

    Hi Maria.
I’ve been an avid follower for about a year now. I’ve learned a lot from you. One of my favorite lessons was how to transform your fireplace. I’ve been struggling with one in a beach cottage and I now have a plan to make it look like a truly designed fireplace and focal point of my living room. I loved the faux marble painting. I also enjoy your lessons about beiges in the kitchen and travertine countertops. Thank you for your wisdom and experience that you’re sharing with us.
    Barbara

  276. Susan Johnson says:

Hi Maria, I’ve been watching you since the Spring of 2012 when painting a house I was selling as well as one I was moving into forced me to realize that I didn’t know anything about choosing color. And now, I’m afraid I will be changing homes again in the not-too-distant future and so I’m “boning up” your advice. The most eye-opening subject for me was about taking undertones into consideration when choosing beiges and whites–It had never before occurred to me.

  277. I have learned so much from following your posts for the last year. I ordered your color wheel and am working on understanding and seeing undertones. This is eye opening! I recently helped my son pick paint for his whole house. He has a builder grade track house where the color scheme was a total mess. He can’t replace flooring, cabinet and countertops but we “leaned into” the color and were able to compliment the finishes and hopefully decorate to downplay the hard finishes.
Next is the outside of the house which at this point is pink!!!! Ugh

  278. Joy Urban says:

I have been following you for about a year, while planning the remodel which I thought would be completed already (ha!) My favorite lesson has been that after all the neutral trends have been analyzed and obsessed and hand-wrung, color is what makes a look timeless. It has given me permission to let the colors I love dominate the space and just pick a neutral and match it throughout. As the budget has ballooned and I have been required to make more inexpensive choices, I still feel confident moving ahead with a “default” setting for tile/painted neutrals (ight violet greige/off white) with various tones of classic natural golden wood in my cabinets/floors/trim/furniture. These will make a classic background for all the summer-day wall and textile colors that will get to play there. And the color wheel has been a huge help for shopping! Mine is dog-eared now. I appreciate the in-depth, well thought out advice in a well thought out format. Thank you, Maria!

  279. Jenny Z says:

Hi Maria! I’ve been following for 5 years! I have a modern home and love color! You have taught me to be “boring “ with my hard fixtures and fun with color! You have also taught me to be true to the style of my home! You are an amazing teacher! This is perfect timing for me as I’m currently doing my master bathroom!

  280. Lynette Cronin says:

    Hi Maria,

I’ve obsessed over attending one of your in person Color Me Happy trainings but have not yet made it to one. I’ve been reading your posts for at least 6-7 years. My favorites are the order in which decisions are made when renovating or building and the boring = timeless. So much good information to be found from you, thank you.

  281. I bought my house in 2008, painted it “Classic Taupe” aka PINK BEIGE and then spent the next year or so trying to figure out why nothing looked right. I probably discovered you around 2010 and then it all made sense. I even used your service when I completed my first big renovation project, a bathroom. I can’t even tell you how many people I have told about your blog. I’m a Realtor, so many people want help choosing paint colors. And I know when I have to do a quick turnaround on a property and choose paint and carpet, that I can quickly choose something that doesn’t have clashing undertones. My stager even told me I was good at it. I’m really not that great, but thanks to you, I am better than many and I am able to avoid glaring mistakes. Speaking of which, I have a decent enough eye that I can tell what went right and what went wrong when I walk into a home. Thank you for pursuing your passion and not giving up!

  282. KNJ says:

Congratulations!!! Been with you the entire time!! In the beginning you even wrote about the different blog posting protocols…and I remember I found you by way of Heather Clawson in NYC…who started blogging because she too had just been laid off from a design job….part of the financial troubles of 2008. I feel like I’ve gone to design school with you as my guide …. Learned so much and also watched your nephews grow up and you reconnecting with your sister…as well as a few moves. Thank you for doing what you do! Hope you continue to enjoy it, stay healthy and savour the journey! Hugs!

  283. Susan says:

Hi, I’ve been following you for about four years. My favorite design lesson is that it is possible to create a timeless bathroom if you use the right tile and fixture finishes.

  284. Melissa says:

    Wow Maria,
Congratulations. Time flies and I can’t even exactly remember when I started following you. I have taken your courses and continue to learn from you! Clean, dirty, timeless, color undertones, and carry my wheel with me! Best was timeless finishing and think it has been 8-10 years of following? I have also grown with you. Thanks and keep up the great work.

  285. Barbara Winters says:

Maria, i have been following your blog when it was Color Me Happy and the banner had the cartoon drawing of you in a pose that was cute and quirky. I went to the university of alberta, faculty of extension, interior design program. when I graduated I started working at pottery barn as an inhome design consultant. Your blog then and even now has remained a professional go-to for me.
    Thank you

  286. Christy says:

I found you, and have been following you since 2021. My favorite advice is about timeless design. For example, I have always loved penny tile, but before I found you I thought it was dated/vintage, so never used it. Now I can use what I always loved with confidence.

  287. Alison Hyde says:

Congrats Maria! I found you a couple of years ago! I am so thankful I did. We purchased a “project” house 1.5 years ago and this was a massive reno. I wanted to implement timeless features because I don’t want to be sick of my house in 8 years. Working with designers over the last 10 years, it’s been very hard not to get caught up in the trends, I didn’t want to do that with this house. For the most part I think we are accomplishing it. I know there will be things I regret, there always is (this is our 3rd reno). But thank you for your insight and and sharing your knowledge. PS I’m very excited about what’s coming up in February in Vancouver! Thanks again and happy blogiversary.

  288. Amy says:

2 years and I’ve learnt so much! My favourite lesson so far has been how to see what is missing in an existing space – magic!
    Thank you

  289. Nikki says:

I have been following you since 2013! The lesson that made the biggest difference in my renovation is that you can only have “one boss.” Thank you so much for sharing your gift with the world! You definitely make it a more beautiful place!

  290. Marika Brown says:

Maria I have been following you for about 4 or 5 years now. Your best piece of advice is the one about timelessness. In a society that throws things away constantly I am traditional and would rather have one lovely garment piece instead of ready wear that doesn’t keep its form or wears out or stains easily. Our home should feel lovely and we should feel lovely in it. That is why your timelessness advice is so lasting! Things well done, don’t need to be redone! (Ha, that’s a good line for you!)

  291. Liz says:

Wow, wish I knew about epoxy grout back in ‘08 when we built! I have been following u for prob 15 years. Watching your home transformations has been inspiring, and I’m happy ur in ur dream home now 💖 Learn lots fm you, certainly the nuances of undertones is key. Keep up the amazing work and Thk u for sharing 👏🏻👏🏻

  292. Michelle says:

I’ve been following you since 2012. I found you just a year after I had painted my apartment and was so unhappy with my choice of white. Sigh. You are the best, I’ve learned so much from you and recommend you to EVERYONE!
