In this week’s Decorate or Renovate!? episode, I’m taking you on a tour of what’s happening around my home right now.

You’ll get garden updates and a tour of a room you’ve only seen glimpses of over the past few years.

If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed the upstairs entertainment room appearing in the background of photos and videos.

What you haven’t seen is the full room:

For one reason or another, I had this space emotionally on hold while I focused on the landscaping and other projects around the house.

It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t finished either.

I was doing exactly what so many homeowners do: putting a project on hold, because life gets in the way.

I was stalling because I thought I needed more time.

In reality, it wasn’t a priority…. until I finally decided to make it more important. So I cleared my calendar to give it a one-day makeover!

A one-day transformation

The result is a room that’s finally living up to its potential—and a reminder that decorating (instead of renovating) is often the last 10% that makes a house feel complete.

With a simple one-day makeover, any room can be transformed:

10 x 14 Area Rug

I love the blue rug I found from Wayfair (linked here), I also purchased a 1/4″ underlay and it makes a huge difference.

I painted the walls off-white when we moved in to eliminate the taupe but it will not stay white when this room is finished. Here’s what it looked like before:

This is the lesson I teach every day: most rooms don’t need to be torn apart. They need to be finished.

Come along for a spring tour of my home and garden, and see how much difference decorating can make.

Watch the video below.

Maria, I so enjoyed your spring tour! You make yourself so human and relatable to your followers! Most of us have “that room,” and it’s so refreshing to know that someone as talented as you does, too!

  2. Brenda says:

Maria, I’ll bet your neighbours all LOVE you. I imagine that they appreciate the view of your landscaping now. The view out the upstairs windows is absolutely incredible. Do you find that the light coming in reflects on the view of the TV? Will you have to do some kind of light blocking window treatments in there? I think it would be hard to go on a holiday because your home and the grounds feel like a resort all on their own.

Thanks for your comment! This windows have black-out roller shades and they work great.

  3. Patricia Borgula says:

Oh my gosh! How your garden has grown! That was so fun seeing all the progress, and changes you’ve made. I am completely jealous!

  4. Mary says:

    I always enjoy your tours!
Everything is so beautiful! I do find myself wondering how many people you have behind the scenes handling management of your landscape, cleaning, improvement projects and business. I only have 1/3 of an acre of property, and I know what it takes to have all those boxwoods looking perfect. HOW do you do it and still have a life? LOL.

    • Maria Killam says:

I don’t do any of the maintenance, I am grateful to have a gardener who comes once a week!

  5. Michelle says:

Love your spring tour! So beautiful! May I ask what the pale blue paint color is that you used on your cabinets in the upstairs room?

  6. Bev says:

    Love it all!!

  7. Christy says:

Such a beautiful home! You did an amazing job.

Did you paint the walls in the upstairs great room the same as the rest of the home? It looks like you have two different trim colors (maybe the crown is the same color as the walls) & doors are another? What colors did you do?

    • Maria Killam says:

Thanks Christy! It’s all the same off-white as the rest of the trim I inherited, but the walls will not stay white. I had them painted when we moved in to eliminate the dark taupe!

  8. Suzanne Moore says:

Wow! Your exterior gardens are magnificent and the views of the surrounding mountains are breathtaking. Needless to say, you always nail the interiors with lots of color and creative design. I love your honesty and practicality. Such a beautiful home and wonderful inspiration. How can you stand to leave it ?

  9. Katy says:

What color is the green in the sun room/dining room wall?
