Pencils of Promise

By 12/14/20097 Comments

I’m participating in a group effort with a group of bloggers coming together today in a collaborative effort spearheaded by Paloma Contreras of La Dolce Vita, in order to make a difference for a very deserving charity.

Pencils of Promise is a wonderful 501(c)(3) organization based in New York, that partners with local communities and organizations to build schools of early-stage education in developing nations for some of the world’s most impoverished and undereducated children.

Sadly, there are more than 75 million children in this terrible situation worldwide.

In the spirit of the holiday season, we are asking for your help today on behalf of these children. Just think of the enormous impact we could have if each person who reads this post donates just $1.00.

If you are willing and able to give more ($35.00 buys shelves for a classroom, $50 provides pencils for one year, $100 provides a teacher’s salary for three months and so on), it would be greatly appreciated.

We are in the midst of the giving season and hope that you will find it in your heart to make a donation to this worthy cause today. You can opt to donate via PayPal if you prefer. Every little bit helps and together, we can make a difference!

While you’re here, subscribe to this feed so you don’t miss out!

    Hey!
I wanted to let you know that my company, Beacham & Company, REALTORS has already made a donation, and plans to donate an additional dollar, up to $50 for every person who comments on my blog post saying they have donated. I think this will be a great way to spread the word through our clients as well as additional blogs, and help raise some money!

My sons class did this earlier this year (or another similar organization) we bought a huge box of pencils and sent it in to his teacher who was organizing a shipment!

Thanks for posting this Maria – these charities need a lot of help; every dollar counts.

My colleague was born in poverty, in Kenya, and received support from a World Vision sponsor for many years. He told me stories of the books, blankets, food, soccer balls, schooling, etc. that he received as a child and how the donations helped his village.

Today he is living in Canada and doing well as an IT Consultant. He is currently searching for his sponsors, to thank them, and is giving back by sponsoring a little girl in Kenya. How cool is that?

Through World Vision I am also sponsoring a little boy and his family in Tanzania and eventhough he is too young to write to me I do get letters from his Aunt & Uncle and have been invited to visit them.

    Giving is a wonderful thing.

hey maria, great idea! We currently sponsor a little girl from Brazil, and she is adorable. She has 3 siblings (she is the youngest) and only a mum to support her. she is the same age as my son so I actually signed him up as the sponsor so they can grow together. We sent off our first xmas card to her this year!

It was interesting what Marlo said because World Vision are so coy about sending the kids things, they want cash for the community, which we obviously already do, I wish they'd let us send blankets, toys, etc… very annoying actually! Maybe if I hassle them enough… lol

    Good luck with your fundraising!

What a great cause, as a teacher I can attest to the importance of something as small as a pencil in a child's life.
