Hi, I'm Maria

I’m the creator of the Killam Colour System® and pioneered virtual colour consulting in 2010, long before online design advice became an industry. After guiding more than 10,000 colour projects and training thousands of design professionals, I teach homeowners and designers how to choose colour, finishes and furnishings that work together beautifully.

Struggling to find reliable decorating advice online? Discover how this supportive community can transform your home decorating journey and help you find better answers all without having to sort through conflicting advice.

So you know how we all use Dr. Google for any and every question that pops into our head? And that’s great because often we do get an answer that is super helpful.

But what about when we don’t know the right question to ask?

Or maybe we think we have the answer but we’re missing something?

Or when something seems so obvious, but it’s really not?

That’s where the danger zone lives for having things go really wrong.

And we just don’t know what we don’t know, ya know?

What’s the right way to hang drapes?

Drapes are a case in point.

It’s certainly the single, most obvious reason why 99% of the planet installs drapery wrong.

Because it doesn’t occur to most people to search how to hang them correctly.

You have a window and a rod, and you want your curtains to cover the window, so it seems self-explanatory to just hang them directly over the window and have them end where the window ends.

But that means the window looks short. The panels will block light and overall it’s just not elegant or pretty.

Hanging the rod directly over the windows vs. hanging them against the wall  (This makeover is here)

See how much prettier and more custom it is to be able to stack the panels to the sides of the window frame and create the sense of height with a floor to ceiling installation?

It feels overwhelming to search Google for an answer…

Searching Google for an answer feels like wandering through a dense forest, where every path looks the same and it’s easy to get lost among the trees. Have you ever felt this too after searching for an answer about your home project?

When you’re trying to find answers online, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sea of conflicting advice. The sheer volume of information can make it hard to trust even the right answers when they appear.

Wouldn’t it be so much better to learn how to decorate confidently, without wasting your time, energy, and money on missteps?

That’s what my Dream Home Club is all about, giving you the space to make decisions that lead to the beautiful spaces you dream of.

It’s a place where learning happens with SUPPORT, and where you connect with others on the same journey.

Because, even if we’re not all on the same page, we’re at least reading from the same book!

I’ve always valued my connection to our colourful community, but what’s been missing is a space for ongoing support and learning.

Now, with this membership, we have a shared space where everyone understands what I mean by “timeless” and learns a more intuitive language for colour through my System.

Inside, my team, myself, and fellow members can provide guidance and encouragement every step of the way as you work through your decorating projects.

We even participate in fun challenges together, like accurately colour matching 3-4 paint dots to the colours found in the pattern of the pillows provided. Step-by-step instructions are provided to help everyone at any skill level participate in the challenge! It’s a great way to practice your skills and learn new things about decorating!

Speaking of learning new decorating skills…

Introducing my online course: Styling School!

I’m super excited because styling is my absolute favourite thing to do!

Whether you want the complete framework or just want to focus on one specific area, I created Styling School to guide you through every detail so you can create that pulled-together, professional look all on your own.

You can get the complete Styling School bundle for $197, or purchase any of the individual modules (You Need More Lamps, Pillows Aren’t Supposed to Match, Give Your Art a Family),  separately for $97 each!

What’s the right lamp for my room? How many lamps do I need? What shade should I buy?

You Need More Lamps takes the guesswork out of lighting your home. You’ll walk away knowing exactly how to create a warm, inviting glow in your space every single evening, so you can turn off the harsh overhead lights for good.

Lamps: The most underrated, underused accessory

Inside this course, there are 6 separate videos where you’ll learn all about:

  • Lampshade Styles (which might be the reason your lamps look wrong)

  • Light Bulbs (which might be the reason you hate your lamps)

  • Wall Sconces/Swing arm lamps instead of Overheads (Overheads are overrated and way over specified)

  • The Power of the Colourful Gourd Lamp (Another reason why you might hate your lamps)

  • Layering Lamps in front of Art (I’m giving you permission)

  • Lamps in the Kitchen (+ the ONLY reason you might not need a lamp in there)

There’s never been a better time to CONNECT with other like-minded decorators!

The lamps are on and the doors are open! 😁 Come on in!

How to Join Styling School

You get lifetime access when you enrol in Styling School, so you can go through the lessons at your own pace whenever you’re ready. You can pick up the complete bundle or start with an individual module that fits your immediate project.

Here’s how Styling School is structured:

  • Full Styling School Bundle ($197): Includes all three core modules: You Need More Lamps, Pillows Aren’t Supposed to Match, Giving Your Art a Family, plus bonus video workbooks.
  • Individual Modules ($97 each): Available separately if you prefer to focus on a single topic at a time.

The Dream Home Club is where everything comes together in real time! Inside my membership community, you get feedback on your home projects, direct answers from my team, monthly design challenges, and a warm group of fellow decorating lovers.

Why the Dream Home Club and Styling School work best together?

Styling School gives you the lesson plans, design rules, clear formulas, and step-by-step video training. The Dream Home Club gives you the live support to put those lessons into practice. You can watch a module in Styling School, post photos of your space inside the club, and get real-time feedback to make sure you get every detail right before spending a dime on your room.
