Orange Yellow; Your Aura is Incredible

Recently I chose a yellow for a bedroom in an on-line consultation (the house was empty).

Then when my client started shopping for the room, everything she found ‘off-the-rack’ was too green compared to the orangy yellow we had chosen (above). She loves strong bright colour and doesn’t want to change it.

This yellow is right on the border of being orange and is too strong for most people (I’m usually choosing yellows like in the images below) so it’s a good point to keep in mind; some colours need custom fabric before you can pull the space together.

In the first image the throw is the only element that ties the colour into the room (and it’s even a little more orange than the colour). The bathroom mosaic tile (above) is also very orange yellow and notice the towel is also orange (not yellow, because that one would be more difficult to find).

This Tuscan yellow kitchen is also an orangy yellow but still greener than the above two images.

It would be like trying to find pink and teal drapes (from the 80’s) right now or forest green and burgandy. Impossible.

And even designer fabric books (with way more selection, 40,000 vs. 400 in a fabric store) would have an extremely limited selection of dated colours like that simply because no one wants them anymore.

source

So when you are choosing a new palette for your brand new house, it’s easier to find off-the-shelf merchandise if you use colours that are more current and dare I say it—trendy.

You picked good yellows. I just posted my buffet that I painted bumblebee yellow, see what you think !

  • Nancy@marcusdesign says:

It is a very beautiful color, it's too bad it is difficult to accessorize colors that are not 'trendy' at a particular time 🙁

This is funny that I stumbled on your color blog. I am in the process of preparing a post for my blog regarding yellow. I enjoyed reading your post.

Marie, I love those yellows but I prefer fall colors and if everyone didn't keep telling me to use white on my blog, it would be this particular shade of yellow-gold.

All of the above pictures look delightful to me, but I can imagine it would be very difficult to find accessories in those colors! I'm glad you warned us about that problem, because it would be smart to consider that before painting even when doing DIY decorating. I never would have thought of not being able to buy accessories for a particular paint color.

I guess the rule in decorating with yellow is different from using yellow in quilts? In quilting, we are very careful to restrict yellow to highlights or accents. Actually, it would be similar to the way yellow is used in your bedroom picture above and in the kitchen. Yellow makes a great accent. I have several items in my sidebar of my blog that are that particular shade of 'sunflower' yellow. It's my favorite shade.

My grandmother's kitchen was lemon yellow (like on the chair at the bottom) and I have to say that was just too bright and too much!

I have a solid armoire built from old barn wood that is painted orange yellow. I love the piece but since it's so prominent in the room, I have been having a tough time pulling everything together. thanks for this post. it helps me understand why it's taking some time to get it right.

I think you said it best: "it’s easier to find off-the-shelf merchandise if you use colours that are more current"

I was thinking that same thing as I was reading this post. It may be the perfect color, but if you have to have everything custom made, is it really the best choice?

We make tradeoffs constantly in life. We have to always be asking the question, how much is this worth to me? And is there an alternative which, while not as pleasing, is pretty close and a whole lot less expensive.

…Orange ya glad it's not beige?

  • Sally@DivineDistractions says:

That's good advice, Maria. I always cringe when I have a client who has painted before we have had the opportunity to select fabrics and furnishings. Personally, I love the pumpkin color…use it all the time, but I usually find my fabrics first! I'm using the pumpkin with turquoise and orange with black in my own home, and I love the combination. Thanks for the post.

The color yellow blends in the room so well. Wonderful choice.

'…Orange ya glad it's not beige?'

    Lol!!!

I call that first orange-yellow colour Marigold!! (After the flower).

  • Ludmila {CreamyLife.com} says:

The orange yellow is just so cheerful! Very bright choice! xo

  • Photography Art Store says:

You're right Maria! It is easier if you work with trendy or current colors. I'm also finding the same problem when I try to "freshen" or update a room that I painted a couple of years ago. It's hard to find accessories that will go with last years paint color. Perhaps a topic for a future post??

So glad yellow is back – in a fresh new way! I love it as an accent color, especially this time of year!

  • Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions says:

I'm working with a client presently, Maria, that has a similar color in her master bedroom {on the walls}. Me, personally, I can only handle a color like this in small doses.

  • Ruthie's Renewed Treasures says:

This yellow is so cheery & happy, fits perfectly on the pages of your blog! Enjoyed the tips Maria!

Can we talk about that bathroom sink? What a cool sink! I want one. The yellow tips are great too . . .

  • Mona Thompson Providence Ltd. says:

I love your posts because as much as I really love all the gray, white and beige that is all over the blog world, it just doesn't work for everyone. Just went back and read your post on trends as well. As designers constantly exposed to new things it is easy to lose perspective. My favorite spaces always look like they have evolved over time. The word timeless has been so over-used that it has lost some of its true meaning but it still describes what I love best.

  • Rachel says:

ah, so true. I have been searching high and low for a vivid, bright patterned teal fabric, and it's just not "in" right now. i hear some fabric line is coming out with a florida palette this summer that is supposed to include more vibrant hues, but truth be told, if it's not "in", it's really hard to find!

  • Roxy Te Owens says:

That first yellow is my fave! That bedroom is literally glowing! And it's so on trend with Pantone's Fall Fashion colors 🙂

  • Erika @ BluLabel Bungalow says:

As with any color, it's all about personal preference. I enjoy seeing glossy yellow lamps and painted furniture especially in a serious room. it's a reminder that it's okay to be a little spontaneous with color!

  • mydivabydesign says:

I like it, I like it, I like it! My sister had her guest room painted this color. It would glow in the evening. I was sad when she painted over it!

Love this post on YELLOW. As a newlywed (ages ago), I read and was influenced by Alexandra Stoddard, in my early home decoratng. She says "Every room needs a little yellow." Do you agree?

  • Poppies and Sunshine says:

Oh how I LOVE yellow! These images are lovely 🙂

  • Anonymous says:

I had the EXACT same issue. A room painted in a orange-golden-yellow and couldn't for the life of me find off-the-shelf drapes to match: so much gray, chocolate brown, sage green and red.

  • kelly says:

    Hi Maria,
I loved all the pictures you posted except the kitchen not so much. 🙂 I had a cute sofa done in the color of your walls in the first photo. I love it with brown. Another color that looks nice with the orange is purples and I just tried a dark blue (like a navy blue) and it looks great. I read your post where navy was mentioned as a color coming up- I agree 100%.
