Recently my Sister (who is finishing her own bathroom renovation–the reveal is coming very soon) mentioned that a friend went straight to Home Depot to get her bathroom renovation scheduled. And then she proceeded to walk through the store and make all her choices.

When I heard that, I realized this likely happens a lot because managing any renovation requires hiring all kinds of different trades, managing timelines (when does one leave and the other arrive, what goes in first) so this is a one-stop-shop kind of situation.
So today if you’re this person, you’re in luck, because I’m going to walk through exactly how to cherry-pick the best colours and finishes and we’re starting with the first item you should choose.
Watch it today to get my best tips and tricks and send it to a friend who is doing the same thing!

The Eclectic Bathroom Design vs. The Timeless One

Hi Maria! I love that you are helping people make good choices with options that are readily available. I think something missing from this video that DIYers (especially first time bathroom remodelers) might not know is that there are some limits with the plumbing. If you are changing fixtures, but not the rough in plumbing, you need things that work together. Also, many stand alone vanities that come with a sink/counter already have drilled holes, so you might be limited on your faucet (8” spread or center set) by that. Also, another note, often big box stores sell vanities with or without the counter top, so it’s good to know that is an option if you want to pick a counter material that isn’t off the shelf. Just a few things I’ve noticed get overlooked when using big box bathroom items in remodels with my clients! Thanks!
Lots of good info! I’m just wondering- why knobs and not handles?
Cluttery appearance for such a small space.
Love that. So informative. Would like a kitchen one, especially for lights in the kitchen.
This video is a wonderful resource for people looking for off the shelf options for a remodel, and really for anyone approaching a remodel even if it’s more custom. I like that you encourage people to go to the big box website for more options or to other online resources for certain categories like lighting and mirrors. Reading the first comment, I would also add that while light fixtures are one of the last things to be installed, the electrical boxes are often roughed in earlier in the process. Some fixtures do require special types/sizes of electrical boxes and of course the placement of the boxes could vary slightly based on the mirror you select. It’s often better to slow down and gather everything in advance to avoid issues down the line. Even if that means your contractor goes on to the next job then comes back to you in another month or two! Fantastic video resource Maria!
Really informative and yes do it again !
Great information! Yes, please do it again!
Hi Maria! Hard agree about the light fixtures at Home Depot, blech. However, I thought that if you were doing sconces you should choose them first, not last, so that the placement of the electrical receptacles on the wall could be planned for?
For my bathroom renovation, I could tell the contractor what kind of lighting I was planning, the rough location, and whether it needed a switch and they wired it without cutting holes in the drywall. They just left the wires in the wall to be fished out later.
I agree with everything you said but where it gets tricky is lighting. If you avoid all recessed lights then those sconce lights have to do all the hard work. Light output with the sconces matters greatly as well as spacing so most of the cute single bulb options at 40 watt max just don’t cut it. If you pick a wide mirror and the sconces are far apart it’s impossible to see well to groom.
I really appreciated this video – very helpful! Thank You Maria 🙂
Thank you so much, Maria! I have been reading your blog since 2010, and now enjoy watching your YouTube videos. This one at Home Depot is very relatable and packed with good information.
this was fabulous, Maria…!
thanks. so many of us just run into HD and grab anything that will save us time…
looking forward to the next one – lamps?
chandeliers?
I so appreciated this. Working with a blank slate, it’s easy to start trying to piece something together based on a multitude of inspiration photos. But, I keep changing my mind and can’t land decisively on the plan. Your video helped me rule out some of the things I was considering and solidify a bunch of my decisions. No pulls, knob on the shower door, stay with the sconces I mentally picked out, paint the bathroom the green I wasn’t sold on. Check, check, check! Suggestion… Could you do a video on wallpaper. Is peel and stick too cheap looking? Does wallpaper hold up in bathrooms? Should I use it sparingly or go all in? What about on the ceiling? Thank you! I appreciate you!
Are black hexagon floor tiles timeless in a bathroom or will I regret them?
Great advice, timeless indeed. Thank you.
Loved your tips on creating a timeless bathroom on a budget! Using a darker grout with the floor tile, but not on the walls makes so much sense and I would never have realized that using matching grout would create another pattern. That visual would drive me crazy. Thank you for sharing! You’re so helpful. Could you do something on how to design a house for ease of furniture placement later?
Perfection, this addresses all the folks who are not shoppers, like me. I care deeply about design and a middle class retired school teacher. I do not have the resources for custom or designer led projects. Thank you, thank you
So helpful!! Do you have a video like this on powder baths? I need some direction to bring some character in without going overboard
This was a very helpful video! Loved the simplicity of it.
You never discussed medicine cabinets or the mirror.
You never discussed medicine cabinets with mirrors
Some come in different depths and have special features like lighting and plug ins for toothbrushes etc.
This home depot video was extremely helpful! Now I know the color grout to choose on the bathroom floor. I did not know that I could have charcoal on the floor and white grout in the shower. Thank you!! Keep doing these!!
That was excellent.
That was a great presentation as you used a place that we all gravitate to when doing bathroom renovations on a budget. I really appreciate how you explain “why” to use or not use a colour. Next time perhaps you can do a bathroom renovation in Ikea. Love your website and useful and non-expensive tips. Keep up the great work Maria.
Hi! Can you help us decide what size mirror to purchase based on the vanity size? How about the size for sconces if we’re flanking the mirror? Thank you!
