BIG NEWS: My YouTube Makeover Series (almost) has a New Name — and a New Mission

“From should we renovate? → to WOW… we don’t need to.”

For the past two years, many of you have watched my one-day transformations under the name Colour Rescue.

If you’ve been with me a long time, you probably remember why I chose that name: most people decorate with neutrals.

So in my mind, I was “rescuing” neutral rooms. Saving them from the all neutral look. After all the show wasn’t called House Rescue, it was called Colour Rescue.

And for a while, that made sense.

But over time, I realized something important:

The name Colour Rescue didn’t communicate what the makeover really WAS.

And combined with another issue — the word “free” in my offer — well it accidentally attracted no one.

Not one blog reader or Instagram follower applied. Ok well maybe a couple.

Instead… I was doing makeovers for friends and friends-of-family just to keep the series going.

And it took someone (Shoutout to Elise) in my True Colour Insider community to point out what I couldn’t yet see:

“Maria, people don’t trust free, it feels suspicious — like a catch.”

And they were absolutely right.

Between “rescue” (which sounds pathetic)
and “free” (which sounds too good to be true),
I had created a message that repelled the very people I wanted to help.

That was my blind spot.

And this is exactly why evolving the show was not only right —it was necessary. So here are the two names I’m considering:

Option 1: Decorate Instead of Renovate

Clear, modern, and instantly understood.
This title speaks directly to the moment when homeowners discover they don’t actually need a renovation—they just need the right decorating and direction.

It feels like a philosophy, a movement, and even a new category of design.
It’s also softer and more invitational; it opens a conversation rather than giving a command.

And of course… this really is what I do.
In almost every makeover, people realize the “reno” they thought they needed simply isn’t necessary.

Option 2: Decorate, Don’t Renovate!

Catchy, punchy, and fun.
It’s more of a rallying cry—a slogan you can hear me saying out loud.
There’s attitude and energy baked into it, and some people will love that directness.

But the question is:
will everyone hear it the right way?
It could sound like I’m anti-renovation, which I’m not.

Sometimes a bathroom or kitchen really is too far gone—too much trendy grey, too many outdated finishes—and decorating can’t save it. In those situations, I help people create the right plan so they don’t make expensive mistakes.
(It just wouldn’t be part of this show.)

So the debate is:
Do we go with the catchy rallying cry?
Or the clear, timeless movement name?

Or do you have a better name? Your feedback matters so much, and this is your chance to help shape the direction of this show.

This will be the show that proves you don’t need demolition — you need direction.

One of the biggest reasons the Killam Colour System makes so much sense (and also how understanding this system will save you so much money) is when you figure out that your bathroom tile is violet grey (below left) and you choose a violet grey from my system and paint the walls (below right).

Then you use my mood board course to find some items to bring that room to life, suddenly what you have is a bathroom that doesn’t have to be renovated:

By the way, while the cabinets could also have been painted, warm woods are back and they don’t bother me. I even like how the green painting repeats the tones in the wood cabinets.

After all, most people have too many bathrooms to rip them out every time the trends change. Most bathrooms just need some creativity. New lighting and mirrors are often the biggest gamechanger. This is where my bathroom refresh comes in, you can buy it here.

Here’s the thing, when you calculate how much renovating this bathroom would have been $30K – $70K depending on where you live, and how expensive your finishes are, buying a package to get a designer (me) to give you the details you can’t, see is a no brainer. You can still go to Bali with the money you saved.

Speaking of Bali, it seems like the last three people I’ve spoken to are going there in January, what am I missing?

In the end, my makeovers aren’t about “rescuing” anything. They’re not about swooping in to fix someone’s mess.

They’re about distracting the eye, styling, and creating a look and a feel.

And above all: They’re about choosing decorating before you waste time, money, and emotional energy on a renovation you may not even need.

And here’s the truth: I’m obsessed with doing this for people.

I wish I could do this for every one of my blog readers. I want you to have so many lamps that you never — and I mean NEVER — need to turn on your operating-room lights (Or should we call them interrogation lights? You decide.)

It’s the magic of colour, styling, and lighting that creates the feeling of your home, not new cabinets or floors, or ripping everything out. Especially because after you renovate, you still will need all the styling items to make your house feel like home.

And in this economy, this kind of makeover is desperately needed. Most people spend money on the wrong things simply because they don’t know what’s missing.

I just filmed a makeover for my best friend from high school — it goes up this Friday.
They built their house 24 years ago and they mentioned that their 90s kitchen needs an update.

But now (OMG wait until you see the befores and afters), who cares??

The transformation was epic, their living room now has a look and a feel. Everyone wants to come over. And the room she sat in three times a year is now the place she never wants to leave.

THIS is what I want for the world. THIS is why the show needed a new name.

How to get a decorating makeover

It’s simple! Here’s how it works.

My day rate for a one-day makeover is $4,000.

But if your project is approved to be featured on the show,
you don’t pay that fee — it’s sponsored by the show.

You invest only in décor — usually $1,500–$5,000 — and it all goes DIRECTLY into your transformation. If you have a lot of stuff and it’s not in the right place, we may not need much of a budget at all, but most people will have a few holes that need to be filled after everything lands in the right place.

The result? One day. No demo. Total emotional shift.

I’m so excited for this next chapter — and I’m so grateful you’re here to witness it.

To launch this new channel, this January, I’m hosting a free live training all about fixing the bathrooms you already have. I’ll walk you through a curated set of real reader bathrooms and show you the exact 5-step process I use to make any bathroom look beautiful without a renovation. You’ll learn how to identify the undertones you’re stuck with, choose paint colours that actually work, update the lighting and mirrors (the real villains), and bring in simple styling that transforms the whole space. Even if your bathroom isn’t selected, you’ll walk away with the clarity to fix your own.

Here are the photos I need:

Clean up the bathroom and take 4 or 5 photos.

Go back and look at the above bathroom photos. They are straight. Move your camera lower to achieve this and line up the edge of the frame with a wall or a door.

Preferably no lights because they cast a yellow light and distort the existing colour

Submit your photos here for a chance to be included. I’ll announce the dates of this free training next week.

For clarity, my makeover show is usually about living rooms but they are hard to virtually transform because I need to move furniture around and hang art so we’re going to do this with bathrooms.

Over to you my lovelies, have YOU ever thought you needed a renovation…
when all you really needed was decorating?
Let me know in the comments below.

Also, at the same time please vote on the name, or maybe you have a better one?

    Hello Maria
Here is my suggestion for your show:
Color, style, light: all wow, no reno!

  2. James Martin says:

    OPTION 2, HANDS DOWN

    5
  3. Lisa Moon says:

Try a question, which is always intriguing. Like, “Decorate – or Renovate??” That way you can also tackle projects where the conclusion really is that a renovation is needed (those projects that are “too far gone”), and make that part of the education process!

Good thing I checked to see if someone had already proposed this — you have my vote!

  4. Mary Ann Wenzel says:

    Hi Maria, here’s my suggestion:

    Design Refreshed

    3
  5. Bronwyn Cormican says:

I like option two; it’s catchy, fun and concise. While the first option is clear, it is a little too wordy in my opinion.

    6
  6. Sandra Berube says:

    focus on the positive:
I’d leave out the word renovate completely …decorate & create – a new look and feel
Here’s a nice thought: to create the quiet sense that your environment supports the life you want to live.

  7. Renee Quick says:

I don’t know if it needs to be in the title, but I do think adding something about sustainability in the description is important and timely… Sustainable Solutions

  8. Rita Kasey says:

Decorate don’t renovate. I love to see these transformations

  9. Dani says:

I like your suggestion Decorate instead of Renovate.
    or
Lisa Moon’s option of making it a question. Decorate -or Renovate?

    6
  10. Liz says:

Love your ideas, Maria. But I’m wondering if you need the riff re: using ‘renovate’ in the title. Eg. maybe along w decor, u feel the walls really need painting. Is that just decorating? Would something like ‘Decorating For the Win!’ capture what ur going for? While I like the feeling ur going for re ‘just decorating often solves a lot of issues’, I’m wondering if putting a negative spin on renovating can potentially turn some off and at end of day, is ‘don’t renovate’ a key part of the message? 💖

  11. Shelley says:

    Decoration Direction!

    Decorate with Direction!

    Colour Direction!

    Or option 2!

    1
  12. Brenda says:

I think I would call the show, “Just Decorate!”. You won’t be highlighting rooms that definitely need a renovation, it’s not really a renovation show. You will be showing homes that truly need to just be decorated. When the show airs, the client can say that they are considering a renovation, but your response will always be to, “Just Decorate!”. Simple, quick, to the point.

    17
  13. Sandy Drawbond says:

    Decorate Before You Renovate!

Orders the two options that suit the current trends, plus gives a choice for those who might want to renovate but are open to decorating before making a reno commitment.

    8
  14. Ashlie says:

I like the question that Lisa suggested. Decorate or..Renovate?

    6
  15. Julie Norval says:

    Hi Maria and Co.,
I love your content on YouTube and I actually prefer the name, “Color Rescue” over the two new suggestions.

    4
  16. Joan says:

I’d switch it around to “Don’t renovate….decorate!” I think it’s more attention-grabbing with the “renovate” part first.

    15
  17. Sarah says:

I had the same thoughts as Lisa Moon. By incorporating both options in the title, when you decorate and people end up liking it more, it validates the decorating aspect, which is what you are encouraging. But it also leaves room for you to teach what to do if renovating is truly needed, and maybe it’s not a total reno, but how to make an update timeless while including what doesn’t*need* to be changed (example, tile in shower is cracked, but floor tile is still on great shape). This will also leave you options when you come across a huge variation of clients and their spaces. Just my 2 cents😁

Looking forward to this growing and expanding for you! It sounds like lots of fun and will help us all to see great visual examples.

    5
  18. Christine Kwasny says:

I also like the “Decorate or Renovate?” idea. It can showcase the mental process so many people go through and that renovation may not be the necessary solution and/or it may not be possible at this time. Renovations are expensive, disruptive, and horrible for the planet. Even people in beautiful homes struggle to decorate them beautifully. I think we all need to learn to work with what we have. Maria is a real master at identifying the problem and implementing creative and simple solutions – and articulating the process! Keep up the great work!!!

    6
  19. Karyn says:

    Maria,
I’d call it “Decorate or Renovate” so, depending on the client, the show may be a straight forward one day makeover or a renovation consultation. I enjoy seeing both in your blog.

    2
  20. Brittany says:

If you want to ditch the word Rescue, keep the word Color! It really speaks to what your overarching goal is, both when you’re decorating and when you are renovating. I appreciate the direction on coordinating & tying everything together whether it’s neutrals and/or stronger colors.
I would have signed up for a makeover every time, but I’m down in TX!

    1
  21. cyd says:

    “Room to Grow”
    1. it gives you flexibility to change and adapt your programming;
    2. you’re tackling a single room;
    3. once a room is decorated well, the room has grown into something you can really use and love.

  22. Dana says:

    Definitely option #2.

  23. Rose P says:

These names remind me of the show,
    “No Demo Reno”
    How about “Redesign with Maria”

    Just a thought.

    1
  24. Lori Loucks says:

How about ‘Decorate Or Renovate?’ Or ‘Decorate vs. Renovate.’ The first title seems unexciting. The second has a negative word (don’t) which I was taught should not be used in an advertising headline, which is similar to a channel title.

    2
  25. Norma Fournier says:

I like option 1. It’s less likely to make people think they should never renovate. You could add a tagline, “Which is right for you?” In case there are submissions that really do need a renovation. You could advise that and then may be able to sell your renovation package in those cases.
Also, am I right in assuming anyone can submit a bathroom? Not just people close by you in Canada?

  26. Tiffany Damiano says:

Love all this, and I agree, FREE is a hard sell!! (Although if you lived near me I would have been top of the signup sheet!😅) I tried offering FREE color consultations after my true color expert training with you and NO ONE signed up!

    Anyway, I’d go with Don’t Renovate…Decorate!!
It’s kind of a click bait title, but especially for people whom renovating isn’t even an option, it’s a little catchier to me. And husbands are more likely to be responsive to the money saving implied, haha!
(It was my bathroom you used for the one module on decorating an all white bathroom and my husband loves you now!! ) I am so grateful for your passion to help EVERYONE have a beautiful home!! 🥰

    3
  27. Lynn D says:

    Decorate! Don’t Renovate
Just move the ! to the fun word.

  28. Lorraine Delorme says:

    Hi.
    I prefer option 2: “Decorate, don’t renovate”.
Another option is: “Why renovate when you can decorate!”

    1
  29. Mitsi A. says:

Number 2 is better. I would also suggest leaning into the transformation part of your process. Something like: Transform – don’t renovate.

  30. KJG says:

I initially preferred Option 1 because it’s seems a more thoughtful approach encouraging consideration of an alternative to renovation. And for many, it is more helpful to be given factors to consider other than to be given absolutes. On the other hand, many do like clear absolute guidance, that’s why we have trends and influencers. So maybe I’ve talked myself into seeing Option 2 as the better marketing approach.

  31. Roberta says:

I like the previous suggestion of Just Decorate!…With Maria Killam

  32. Kelly Clark says:

In terms of the title I would stay true to what sets you apart and that’s color (or colour:))–You’re the Queen of that niche. I think Colour Rescue is strong and understandable and it’s also the biggest problem that needs to be solved or determined before any design/decorating can begin anyway—you can still do what you love just keep the color aspect as well. Even if someone doesn’t have the wrong undertone, the color palette still needs to be decided before design selections. Besides, I just don’t care for the word “decorate”—please don’t be offended–for me it just sounds more low end like couch or curtains, etc. And let’s face it, every client feels like a deer in the headlights when it comes to color selection. Hey! There’s a name: “Deer in the Headlights”–haha! You’re awesome, Maria! Whatever you choose will very likely work–we just all have an opinion:)

    1
    • Janice says:

Kelly, you make a very good point. Maria is absolutely known in the color world. When I had a paint specialist come to my metro Atlanta house for some advice, I casually said the name, “Maria,” and before I could finish she responded, “Killam!”

  33. Tia says:

    Option 2!

  34. c says:

The comment you made that grabs my attention is: It’s the magic of colour, styling, and lighting that create the feeling of your home. Using the word “create” calls me to a journey to make my home atmosphere something that serves my family and friends. Also, “atmosphere” and “magic” draw me in with curiosity. Colour, style, and lighting are the means in which to fulfill this. So, a few ideas are: Create your atmosphere, with colour, style, and lighting. Create with colour, styling, and lighting. With the two options you mentioned, I agree with Decorate or renovate? It doesn’t feel so declarative. A last thought is: Create and decorate, before you renovate.

    1
  35. Sigrid says:

    Option 1,
I love your colour rescue. Read all your posts, and followed your expertise. Has made difference with how I chose my paint colours. Still not fond of my pink undertones due to bossy pink stone fireplace. Painted Kestrel white. The homes you have transformed are gorgeous

  36. Bonita O'Neill says:

    Don’t Renovate, Revamp with Maria

  37. Lynn Smith says:

    Decorate instead of renovate
My choice for the show. It sounds classier.

  38. Jenny Bailey says:

The best name for your new series is Maria’s Expert Room Refresh or Maria’s Room/Space Makeover
The other phrases like, decorate don’t renovate are more like taglines.
I would use When decorating will eliminate the need to renovate.

    1
  39. Karen says:

Option 2 is likely the better choice of the two. However I think Lisa’s suggestion of “Decorate – or Renovate” is my ultimate choice.

    1
  40. Jennifer Houle says:

    How about:

    “Decovate with Maria”
A combination of decorate and renovate.
    Just a thought🤗
    I also like option 2.

  41. Danielle says:

Of the two options, I like Decorate, Don’t Renovate. Option One seems clunky. I also like the word Refresh. Decorate has a pricier connotation, in my opinion. What about Refresh Not Redo? Or Refresh Not Reno. Its on the catchy, playful side like Option 2 but doesn’t seem as involved and expensive. This sounds like using what you have, repositioning and adding in some other things to freshen up the look. I personally have things I love I have purchased over the years or inherited that I would like to use because they have a meaning or memory tied to them but they just need a fresh take. Or Fresh Take, Don’t Renovate.

  42. Donna Henderson says:

Hi Maria! I love your passion for helping people have homes they love while saving them unnecessary expense!

I think a name closer to the second name, that doesn’t sound like you are against renovating would be just right.

    Decorate before you Renovate!

  43. Hi Maria,
I say instead is direct and won’t be confusing. I can’t wait to see the transformation. I have a bathroom that I don’t think can be rescued or transformed, just renovated. Maybe I will send it. Love being part of your community!

  44. Nichole says:

My vote is for Option 2: Decorate, Don’t Renovate! I love the energy of this title. It stops you right in your tracks and makes you think about what you are doing. Do I really need to renovate or just decorate? It gives you permission to explore the less committal more creative option to home design.

  45. How about Decorate – Why Renovate? There were a lot of good comments – an always add a tagline to explain more. Not sure moving away from your main focus of color is a good idea – perhaps there is a way to combo?

  46. Kim P Osborne says:

    How about “Room Rescue!”

    1
  47. Jacqueline says:

    That’s AMAZING!! 👏👏👏😃

My first thought was also “Decorate or Renovate?!” …with the question mark. 😅
It would make me want to watch to know the answer every time.
Can hardly wait to see it!!! 👏😉

    1
  48. Mary Crane says:

I like the second name. Everyone thinks that they need to renovate, so I think you can tell them directly not to. It’s more catchy. And being green is becoming a religion. Decorating is certainly more environmentally-friendly than ripping out perfectly good flooring, cabinets, etc. because they look dated.

  49. Jadzia says:

I like option two. Or the suggestion to make it a question: Decorate–or Renovate?

  50. Kirwin741 says:

    2: Decorate, Don’t Renovate!
It’s short sweet & to the point

  51. Hi Maria,
I absolutely love the Makeover Series. There is always so much to learn from.
As far as the name, I would go with Option #2.
Thank you for everything you do!
    Best regards,
    Judy M

  52. Nicole A Lance says:

    Option 2

  53. Brenda Ducharme says:

My main bathroom in my Florida home has a pink countertop, Peptobismol pink. I debated tearing it out but decided to decorate and celebrate the pink colour. I found the best shower curtain, pink and soft brown and tan. I replaced the mirror with a brown framed one and put up a new light fixture over the mirror. Added some decor on the counter and 2 paintings that coordinated. What a transformation!
Everyone likes the cute little room now.
I like the second name for your new launch and I love all your practical advice!

    1
  54. Maralee says:

Although I like #2 best, I would be careful of saying “don’t renovate” since a big part of your business model is helping people renovate.

    • Moira says:

Of the two options, definitely #2.
      My suggestions:

      1. RENOVATE?…maybe.
      DECORATE?…definitely!

      2.RENOVATE? Try DECORATING first!

  55. Valerie Carnegie says:

I like the second one very much. You are the one person that I would take advice from.

  56. Anon says:

Something like “When Decorating Beats Renovating!”
It recognizes that renovation is sometimes the right choice. But it piques interest: Hmmm, when DOES it make sense to try decorating instead?

That said, I did like the phrase Colour Rescue. When you are feeling lost and don’t know how to even begin finding the solution that will allow you to move forward … who doesn’t want to be “rescued”?! 🙂

    1
  57. Suze Bonadeo says:

I like Option #1 because it uses positive words.

    1
  58. Hazel says:

    Colour Recue by Maria

  59. Melissa says:

How about Color Correction or Color Direction
    for the name?

    1
  60. Janice says:

Maria, I have learned so much from you! I love Option 2, Decorate, Don’t Renovate, because it is absolutely catchy and fun – just like you! And you’re correct when you say that folks are searching for lower cost options these days. One of your many gifts is your ability to translate your incredible sense of style into strategies that we all can follow, at least those of us who live close to a Home Sense! P.S. I just bought two beautiful floor lamps in the Black Friday sales!

I like “Why renovate ? Decorate!

  64. Janel says:

I like #2 the best BUT only if I say it the way I hear you saying it & I agreeit could be too blunt & make people think you are only about decorating. You are wonderful & I would jump at the chance to have you come to my house for a free color rescue. People need to know that you are a serious color & design expert. I’m going to write below a lot of different options. This is harder than it seems it would be. Hope it helps. And thanks for all you do!
    1. Lights! Color! Style! (Like Lights! Camera! Action!)
Or Lights! Color! Let’s style it! Or “Lights! Color! Let Maria style it!
    2. The Magic Reno with No Demo
    3. “Style Me Happy” Reno. Or “Color Me Happy” Reno
    4. Room Transformation without the Renovation

    10. Decoration Transformation
    11. Don’t Renovate…DECORATE!

  65. Traci Gentry says:

    Decorate, Don’t Renovate

  66. Gerda Honsek says:

    Maria,
When reading the slogans I thought they fell a bit short of describing what you are actually doing. The slogans might not appeal to people who want to renovate a bit and decorate. And a lot of projects involve both.I am in the Calgary area and came across your blog when we renovated kitchen and bathrooms. I learned a lot from you, especially choosing back splash, counter top and bathroom tiles in a way that it harmonizes with the existing hard fixtures while being time less.

  67. Donna Mouw says:

Option 2 or Lisa Moon’s idea of converting it into a question.

  68. Ingrid Ulrich says:

    Here’s another suggestion:
    Decorate before you renovate!

This can imply that you try the decorating strategy first, and you may realize you don’t need to renovate at all. Or at least your space is pretty while you wait for the right time (or budget and finances) to renovate in the future.

  69. Kristin says:

I prefer, ‘Decorate! Don’t renovate.’ The other one is unnecessarily wordy and safe.
Then, all you have to do is acknowledge somewhere that there ARE situations where renovating may be ideal. Readers are savvy. We know you’re not anti-renovation.

  70. Maybe as simple as Decorate or Renovate?

  71. I agree with Lisa — Decorate or Renovate? is such a strong option. It’s fantastic for SEO because it matches exactly what homeowners are already searching for. And it doesn’t come across as anti-renovation. It captures people who are considering a renovation and you can possibly “save” them from that hassle if they don’t need to go through that to get a look that reflects the real solution people are trying to figure out. It also works beautifully as both a show title and a recurring episode theme.

  72. Hi I couldn’t help but add my two cents…
How about move the exclamation point on #2… and maybe a parenthesis?

    DECORATE! (Don’t Renovate)
    Or
IT’S TIME TO DECORATE! (Not Renovate)
The emphasis is then on the positive not the negative… and could also show that there is a time for decorating and a time for renovating…. That sounds like a good introduction actually… and a segway to a second series or show for when it’s time to renovate! Good luck!

  73. christine Williams says:

Decorate or Renovate? Simple not offensive to either option.

  74. Mary says:

I like simply, “Decorate or Renovate?”

  75. KNJ says:

…pondering what is actually taking place…seems the issue is that ‘Reno’ isn’t really what is Not happening…Reno as in to restore to a good state of repair Is happening but NO Demo…one can paint cabinets, add a new faucet and then add paintings, rugs, lights…something like No Demo, slight Reno, Full on Deco Wow!…doesn’t have a ring to it …need to play with the words, nuances a bit more. Can’t wait to watch it regardless of name!

  76. Jo says:

Those capture the spirit, but feel a bit long for a title. I’d opt for something punchier like DecoReno! or Decovation.

  77. Margaret Bannerman says:

    How about “Decorate vs. Renovate?”

    • Sharon says:

I strongly go with “Decorate – or Renovate?” Gives choices of which you do both! Sometimes people fall in the middle of this question and need help deciding which they really want. This question type title has no negative connotations.
