Trending Mediterranean Exterior Paint Colours; A Review

My Live Virtual Specify Colour with Confidence Event for May is happening Monday & Tuesday! We should have a page up very soon afterwards with future dates to register into! Thanks for your patience. If you want to be the first to be notified, you can leave your email address here.

I wrote a post many years ago about the ONLY colours a Mediterranean house should be painted. During the 90s, they were painted varying shades of green beige and sage green, during the brown trend, we saw them go brown (and gold which did work) and then grey, in the last 10 years (below).

Green Exterior | Brown Exterior | Grey Exterior

Since most people choose trending paint colours when they paint their exterior, now that the black and white trend is here, they are back to varying shades of white, cream or pale yellow – which happens to work very well on this style of home.

We received these wonderful after photos last October with a note from our eDesign client:

“Thank you so much for your help selecting my exterior color. Out of the options you sent, we decided on the SW Taupe Greige you specified. This color was a surprise as I had never considered this shade of white and have never read about it in blogs. It has updated our home beautifully. I love it so much, I smile every time I pull into my driveway. It’s less of a color and more of a feeling and it’s just perfection.”

Here’s the before:

Mediterranean House Before eDesign Consultation

It’s a gorgeous fresh update and not too stark white. You need to be in the world of greige or pale beige in order to achieve the perfect white.  My Masterclass for Exterior Colour Selection will help you with this, along with other classic and timeless colours for your exterior. I will also post the actual colour she chose on the Facebook page attached to that group. These are the perks of being a member.

And here’s the beautiful after photos:

Learn how to choose colours for your exterior in my Masterclass here. It’s available on-demand, comes with updates during the trend and a Facebook page where you can share post and learn.

My eDesign packages are still SOLD OUT but should be up again for a short time in approximately a week. sign up for the waitlist here if you need colour help with your exterior.

What colour are the homes in your neighbourhood?

PS. Happy Mothers day to all the incredible Mom’s out there! Here’s my amazing Mom:

“It’s less of a color and more of a feeling.” 100%. Maria, that could be your new mantra! So true, right?!

  • Avatar Penny says:

The best exterior transformation I have seen with just paint colour change! Beautiful.

Great picture of your mom. Hope she enjoyed Mother’s Day!

Great update for that home too! Looks so fresh and timeless.
Can you please tell me what color that is?
What color did you use for the wood trim at the roof, fascia board?
What color are the garage doors, were they repainted or changed?

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Avatar J Grey says:

Yes, please share the name of this color you used. So gorgeous!

The E-deign client mentioned taupe greige, while your post mentions griege or pale beige, so it’s a little confusing : )

Happy Mother’s Day to your beautiful mama!

Maria what a marvellous transformation in this post! Thank you for posting it! In the city just to your west all new builds of condo are painted such ugly charcoals and black! I want to go around with a paint can! The one across from the huge box grocery store in town takes the cake as they added bright yellow here and there and even tho you would think that would brighten it up it is all wrong! Developers must be getting fantastic deals on the abundance of grey/charcoal paint left as we hopefully are moving to something more pleasing?

Well paint is made to order so I’m not sure that is the case but there’s definitely a lot of other finishes that will likely go in the garbage once people stop buying grey en-masse. Thanks for your comment, Maria

What a beautiful transformation! SW doesn’t list a Taupe Greige on their website. What is this color named? Thanks!

    • Maria Killam Maria Killam says:

The reason why they don’t call it that is because they are not using my system. In my system, all the palest of the greys are called greige, and the palest of the beiges are called complex creams because that’s what they basically look like but the idea is to choose the correct undertone even in the palest of beige’s that subtly pick up the undertones in the room. The name of this colour will be posted on the Facebook page that is attached to the masterclass. You can purchase it here: https://mariakillam.com/exterior-colour-masterclass/

Such a lovely transformation! What is the name of this SW taupe greige?

  • Avatar Violet says:

    Beautiful!!!
I am going to guess that the color is: SW Heron Plume.

Love the idea of ‘feeling’ – not just color. (that’s how I perceive color, anyway)

Magnificent home – much much more than an update…

Is there an exact SW paint color used for this project?

Once again, Maria … thanks for your perspicacity and wonderful eye…

    What a beautiful home.
I must admit, I liked it much better the original colour, much more suited to the home. Now the home’s accents just blend into the wall paint.

In my area–actually across the street– a real estate agent painted his wood siding home all white and changed to black windows and gutters, roof shingles were already black. It is an eyesore, all the neighbours talking about how bad it looks. It is a westcoast style home, nestled in Ponderosa pines and should have stayed an earth colour.

I just painted my 1962 Arizona house SW 7101 Futon -a slightly creamy off-white color and I love it!

  • Avatar M says:

    Maria,

Did the homeowner replace or repaint garage doors in same color as home?
    Thanks

I live in New Mexico, and I absolutely hate seeing a stark, cool white on an adobe house!
