Remembering Vera: A Commemorative Bench at Her Favourite Spot

As we head into mother’s day weekend, this blog post is dedicated to Vera, the beautiful and gifted daughter of my Director of eDesign, Tricia. Vera lost her battle with brain cancer on July 1st, 2022.

Today would have been Vera’s 14th birthday.

Our hearts here at MK are with Tricia and her family in their unimaginable loss, and especially this weekend.

She was extraordinarily gifted artistically (like her mom ❤️) and a kind girl who loved animals.

Remembering Vera

In honor of her memory, Vera’s family and friends have organized to have a commemorative bench installed at Vera’s favourite spot, the Buena Vista off leash dog park in the beautiful river valley in Edmonton, Alberta.

She and her family visited this park almost daily with her adored spaniels Stanley, Mabel, and Iris. Vera was one of those special people that connected with all animals. The shy horse that wouldn’t come to anyone. The skittish dog unsure of strangers at the park.

She created a loving space for all of them. She looked forward to her daily visit with ALL the dogs at the park.

The park bench will be installed facing a clearing full of wild flowers and the shrubby old tree Vera and her friends would climb in while the dogs dashed through the tall grasses.

It will have a plaque with her name and hopefully a QR code that will show pictures of Vera and her dogs. Our hope is that it will be a cherished location to relax and spend time with furry friends, all while honoring the memory of the sweetest girl.

Little Icons

We want to help Tricia’s family raise a few more funds to move the project forward. If you would like to contribute to creating this special and enduring commemorative spot for Vera and her family, there is a GoFundMe account set up here.

As we remember Vera on what would have been her 14th birthday, let us also take a moment to appreciate the mothers in our lives on this special day.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms out there.

xo,

Maria

Sending love from across the pond on an incredibly sad day. No parent should have to outlive their child. It’s amazing that Tricia is still standing upright, never mind making such a huge contribution to the MK family.

She had to be an angel who decided to give Earth a brief try. My heart deeply goes out to her family and friends. Here is a an explanation on grief that I find especially poignant: Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but cannot. All the unspent love gathers up in the corners of your eyes, the lump in your throat and in the hollow part of your chest. Grief is just love with no place to go. Jamie Anderson.
    With deepest sympathy,
    Susan Salo
P.S. When this beautiful bench is placed in the dog park, I hope you will share it with us.

  • Cynthia says:

Thank you for sharing this. I am so very very sorry to hear of this tragic loss of Vera. I was feeling sorry for myself going into this Mothers Day weekend. My mom just died July 4th 2022, so my first Moms Day without her is upon me. I guess I missed the original post last Canada Day, my mom was so sick that day, I either missed it or it was just too much at the time. But today I am feeling like my mom is reminding me of my great blessing in having her as long as I did, and that we were blessed with the usual process of child burying parent, not the other way around. My heart goes out to Tricia, there is no more difficult pain. I can not even begin to imagine her sorrow. May she be comforted and have peace. Thank you for reminding me to treasure my blessings and be thankful. Blessings to all the moms🥰

What a beautiful way to honor Vera! I will happily donate. My 5 year old daughter died from a brain tumor in 1990. I started following Vera’s story through the GoFundMe page with such an aching heart, all too familiar with what they were going through. I was so glad to see Tricia with you in the post from High Point. I think of her often. What a nice distraction from grieving. She will find peace some day, I’m sure, as the memories of her dear daughter continue to fill her heart with love. I must say that Mother’s Day still brings a little sadness my way, but I’ve learned to honor the gift that my daughter gave me to become a momma! ❤️
