Which colour should I paint my trim?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions I receive, and it’s no surprise since getting your trim colour wrong is an expensive mistake. Today, I’m breaking it down step-by-step in a YouTube video! You’re going to want to save it for when you need to make a decision about trim colour.

In my home, I was really grateful that all the existing painted trim and panelling (and there was a lot) was already off-white when we moved in because it would have been very expensive to change!

In the video I’ll explain why off white is easy to work with.

Another big question that is trending right now is whether or not to paint your trim a greige or a beige paint colour. Are you considering doing this?

In the video I’ll explain the pros and cons of why this may or may not be a good idea. And, how to find the RIGHT white for your trim colour.

How to choose the right trim colour

My course last week in Dallas was so good! We had an amazing group and every table seem to be friends at the end! That’s the best thing about in person classes!

Feeling FOMO? We will announce our Spring course in Chicago soon, sign up here to be notified.

In each in-person class, we invite two True Colour Experts to attend for free as volunteers. You can volunteer if you’ve completed this training within the last two years. If you’re interested, make sure you’re subscribed to my list so you get the email invite! 🙂

To ensure enough contrast between trim and wall color, what’s the minimum difference in LRV that you recommend? Thank you for making the world a more beautiful place!

It depends on how light or dark the actual wall colour is. Also, how clean vs. dirty the wall colour is. A dark clean and bright colour can have a whiter trim than a dark and earthy one, which is why the tuscan trend was filled with pale beige trim colours vs. off white. This is also the reason why using LRV to try and choose paint colour is not that helpful, it’s also the reason you won’t find the LRV conversation in my system. Maria

Has anyone regretted painting their wood stained doors and trim?

Sherwin Williams Pure White is my favorite trim color. It has so little undertone, it went with yellowish tile, beigy tile, the carpet, color… To me is just the perfect fresh white without clashing with anything. It makes it easy to decorate with whatever colors you want.

Maria, what is the relationship between the trim color and the adjoining ceiling color? Most ceilings in my area are painted a shade of white. Is there a general guideline of white trim color and white ceilings? My interior trim is Simply White by Benjamin Moore which goes well with all of my wall colors. I painted the ceiling in my northeast primary bedroom Simply White as well. But, in the room with little natural light, the Simply White ceiling looks gray which I dislike.
And I like an intimately lit bedroom. Maybe this situation is when a colored ceiling is needed because you have indicated that light is needed to really to bring white to life.

Thanks Maria. You mentioned to treat bathrooms like islands and paint the trim according to the bathroom fixtures. Is this OK for a bathroom that is en suite like a master bath? i.e. Is it OK for the trim in the master bath to be different from the trim in the master bedroom? My master bath fixtures are a bit off from the rest of the house.

Maria, I know you have done a blog post about what to do with trim color and white replacement windows, but if memory serves it was from awhile back. Has your view changed at all on how to handle the trim color with white replacement windows when the other hard finishes are a pink beige?
