9 Lessons from a 2 year old Blogger

By 11/01/2010February 10th, 201762 Comments

I started my blog because I had spent 2 days listening to webinars for designers on-line. One of them was about blogging. The speaker said every designer should have a blog. It’s the live version of your website and gives people a sense of your personality at the same time.

It happened to be Halloween when I wrote my first post and 2 years ago it landed on a Friday night. I wrote 7 posts that weekend and couldn’t sleep I was so full of ideas on what to write next.

Here are the biggest lessons I have learned in the past two years and exactly 450 posts later:

1. Pick a Name that resonates with your Brand

As a design blogger, I learned that technically your blog should be the same as your name (if that’s what your business name is). Better for branding, etc. And I wouldn’t have it any other way now. Colour me Happy is me (which is why I chose it) and the right colours make every one happy, so it fits with my ‘brand’. When choosing your blog name, a good test on whether it’s the right name for you is if you still like it when you say “Hi it’s [your name]from [your blog name] calling”.

2. DIY, Luxury Designer or Somewhere in Between

If you look closely, many of the number one blogs are Do-it-Yourself, why? Because unless you have unlimited discretionary income to decorate, even high end, million dollar homes have many empty rooms to fill without the high-end budgets to go with it. Martha Stewart got rich teaching us all how to do it ourselves. So depending on which clients you want to attract, you may decide to either increase or limit the amount of DIY you present on your blog.

3. Write Consistently

I have averaged one post every second day for the past two years (approximately 16 per month). Usually I’m in bed by 9:30 pm (hey I’m a morning person) and there are many nights around 8:00 pm where I would love nothing more than to relax in front of a movie but if my post is more than 2 days old I go up to my office where I might be until midnight writing the next post. The reason everyone says you need to post 3-4 times a week is that eventually when people start searching for information in your area of expertise, they are bound to hit a post you’ve written and find you! That’s hard to do if you only post once a week.

4. Write like you talk

Before I started blogging I was absolutely convinced that I was not a writer. If I had to send out a professional letter it would take me forever and I would usually get it proofread by someone else. And it was probably better that I didn’t have any preconceived notions about being a writer because I just started writing like I talk and along the way I discovered that it’s the way you’re supposed to do it anyway.

5. Find an Editor

I also have an editor (my best friend). When I write posts that I think are more reactive or controversial I read them to her. Many times she has said “That’s not colour me happy, nope don’t post that, or say it this way instead.” She makes sure my writing voice stays consistent with who I am and what I stand for on my blog.

6. Tell Stories

I have always been a good storyteller. The people closest to me might have called me a drama queen in my younger days because I always had a new drama to share. My mom still says “Oh good, you’re here, tell us the latest, now we’ll be entertained”. It’s the stories you share from your life and your business that help your readers relate to you as another human being instead of words on a computer screen.

If you think you’re boring then read this post; “If you’re boring, it’s because you’re scared and you’re hiding your best stuff. Getting un-scared is the hardest thing you’ll ever do, but since you need to do it anyway in order to have a great life, you might as well get started now.” Sonia Simone

7. Teach us Something

You are either entertaining your readers or teaching them something. If your blog is just a serious of posts promoting your business no one will read it. Some bloggers worry that if they give away all their ideas then no one will hire them. Angie from You Look Fab gives it ALL away. Yet I still hired her to shop with me because I was clear, reading her blog that she knows fashion and I knew I would still make mistakes shopping on my own. When people read your blog, what do they learn? Are they clear about your area of expertise?

8. Be Happy

Unless you’re blogging for the sheer fun of it (not for your business) be positive and upbeat. No one will hire you otherwise. Enough said 🙂

9. Be Authentic

I learned the most about being authentic from reading Penelope Trunk’s blog. She has the most brilliant way of taking ordinary farm life and turning it into a lesson in communicating, risk taking or time management. And it’s interesting because she’s just talking about her life. But the real stuff that most of us would be scared to death to ever post on a blog–whenever she posts it–I love her just a little bit more and wish she lived closer so that we could be friends. And she has almost 60,000 subscribers. When I read this post on Marketing Lessons from Esther Williams on her blog, it inspired a similar post that I wrote called Design Lessons from Elizabeth Stevenson. So take half a day and read her blog, trust me you’ll learn something.

Congratulations, Maria! I love your blog! I love reading your "voice" and you do an amazing job of spreading happiness just by sharing that.

  • Things That Inspire says:

Wonderful thoughts. I am one of those 'once a week' posters – I would like to do more, and have loads of kernels of posts ready to be developed – but once (or maybe twice) a week really suits my style.

    Congratulations on 2 years!

  • Kelly @ JAX does design says:

I've learned all the same things in my almost-two years of blogging. And I'm still learning!

I'm trying to get my decorator friends who don't have a blog to start one. It's such a great way to express yourself, share what you love, and to meet some pretty fabulous people.

My blog isn't the most popular one out there, but I have regular readers who mean a lot to me, and I've made some wonderful friends, both virtually and in real life. I love decorating and I love writing, and blogging is the best way to combine those two passions.

    Happy 2nd Blogiversary!

    Kelly

  • Carrie says:

Happy Blogiversary! Two years of consistent writing is something worth celebrating! Thanks for your helpfulness and authenticity – Those qualities are evident in every post!

  • Ann at Rose et Lis & PlumSiena says:

    That's quite a milestone, Maria.
    Congratulations!

You were one of my primary inspirations to blog, as I came across your blog early in my blogland discovery. I try my best to post at least three times a week and also have a daily design blog (PlumSiena) that seems to fit my needs well. It does take devotion!

    Keep up the great job!

    -Ann

  • Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions says:

I learned a lot of this from trial and error and I guess most of us do. My first posts were just informational and would list my contact info. Once I started to let more of myself through, I picked up more followers. Then more when I would share how to make something that could be an accessory or a window treatment or a "try this idea".

I got my first client this year from my blog, Maria. someone who actually said when she called, "I found you through your blog". We have done three rooms so far and are moving into the kitchen next. She liked my blog and felt comfortable calling me because I "was down to earth". She felt like she could talk to me.

I love that you give tips about blogging… a true expert at many things! I have learned that many more people read my blog than comment and actually follow. They get a kick out of my personal stories that are always tied into design- it creates the connection. They feel safer by getting to know my personality before they give me a call!

  • Cristin says:

Great tips! Wow, congrats on 2 years. Your blog has never looked better. Keep up the great work.

Congrats on hanging in the blogging world for two years. You have an amazing blog. Although I don't post regularly I am a dedicated reader. Thanks for the great tips. Being a young blogger, I'm still learning. Thanks for sharing your tips.

Great post! And Congrats on 2 years!! I have been toying with the idea of starting a blog (I am a major DIYer) and I will be taking your post to heart for sure! Thanks Maria.

  • Annie Wilcox Designs says:

As a still new blogger I am learning all that you share, you are wise, very wise. I look to you for inspiration. Thank you. Cheers to two years.

You have done an amazing job with your blog and I have learned a lot from you. Thanks for being so generous with yourself ! It's been a pleasure getting to know you through blogging.

  • Lindley Arthur says:

Love this post…great advice for a new blogger like myself! And congratulations on two years!

  • Brillante Home Decor says:

Well Maria…this post is just right on what I was saying in my latest post…because of my blog I was asked to write articles for magazines and English is not my mother tongue! I am still amazed of what blogging gave me. I agree with every single word you said and actually the name I have chosen for my blog does not appeal to me anymore, so possibly soon I will change the name of my company and of my blog. You are an inspiration!

  • Chic 'n Cheap Living says:

Happy blog birthday! My blog "voice" has definitely evolved over time but I also catch myself and try to be consistent now.

  • angie says:

Inspiring, Maria! All so true. I have met you and spent time with you and you *do* write like you speak – which is one of the things I love about your blog 🙂

Thanks for the shout out too sweet lady.

  • Vanessa@decor happy says:

Congrats Maria! Yours was one of the first blogs I found and I always find it a joy to read and learn so much. I'm thinking of getting a stylist after your great shopping posts!

Try as I might, I find it hard to post more than 2 or 3 times a week. Life gets so busy. I do feel some guilt about it but always think in the grand scheme of things, does it really matter? I know that's one reason my blog hasn't been as successful as some others that started when I did but that's OK!

  • Kate says:

    Thanks for the tips!

  • traci zeller designs says:

Yay for 2 great years of Colour Me Happy! Maria, you have taught and inspired so many people, me included. Thank you for those two years — and for being who you are!!
    xoxoxo!

  • Marcus Design says:

Congratulations on your 2 year anniversary Maria! You and your blog are such an inspiration. Your 9 things are bang-on, I will be book marking this for sure. I would never go back to my pre-blogging days for anything, I've made wonderful friends, learned so much, and gained confidence through this amazing ride!

As a blog reader, I would say that it helps if you can get your readers addicted to reading you regularly.

Every day I go to my favorite blogs and hope they've written something. I check out some of the blogs they link to and then go back the next day or so if I liked them. I quit checking them out if they don't post in a few days because I don't have the patience to keep looking to see if they have anything new I like. If they only post once a week, I will have quit reading them by the time they post again.

I personally like it when my favorite bloggers post something every day even if it is small. If they have something really good once a week or so, then I'll keep checking them everyday if they have a little something. Then I get addicted to checking their blog every day.

Thank you for this. I love your blog and will take your suggestions to heart. I still have to find my voice and my purpose aside from documenting experiences for my kids and family.

    Happy 2 years!

  • theonikm says:

    Good Morning Maria!

    Happy 2nd Birthday! God bless!

I absolutely love the photos on this particular blog! They are just my style; traditional and in gorgeous colors!

I look forward to working with you on my new home!

  • Congratulations on 2 years. When I first discovered your blog, I read 90% of it within a couple of days. Why? I was constantly learning and I couldn't get enough of it. I got a color education that is incredible — that's why I see you as an expert. Expert's are not afraid to share what they know, and that lends credibility. Educators want to learn too, and by sharing, we learn what others think and that makes us better. So, bravo for putting your knowledge out there — it makes you all the better 🙂

  • Nimisha says:

    Maria,
Yours is a really great blog and one of the top 3 I read every morning. I hope to start my own blog someday and all your posts not only give me inspiration but also strength and make me feel I can do it if I really want to !
You have great expertise in your craft and that always comes across on your posts.
    Congratulations.

  • Mary Anne says:

    Good Morning Maria:

I am a new blogger and I am having a little trouble with the 'tech' part of blogging. I really loved your post from yesterday and will heed it carefully. I owned a shop for 24 years and all I ever hear is will I ever open another shop!!! Yikes! So, I decided to blog and so far everyone has been happy. You are an inspiration and your color expertise is also inspirational……….I am an interior designer as well and even I have referred to you. I spoke to a group of women the other day and referred them to your blogsite if ever they were in question without a professional at hand.

    I so respect you Maria!

  • Connie @ SogniESorrisi says:

Happy Blogiversary!! Great advice. #6 is the hardest for me, I think.

  • sarah @ realestatestyle says:

    Hi Maria,
this is a wonderful post! I have been clicking links, and going all over your blog. I have had my blog for maybe a year and a half now, and I realize I still have so much to learn! Thanks for the education-I'll be back!

  • Sherri Cassara says:

Hi Maria, You have taught me almost as much about blogging as you have about color! Your blog (I don't remember how I even found it) is one of the first design blogs I ever stumbled upon and have read every post since. I started blogging in September with my first post about my daughter's wedding – I was planning on just a wedding blog to generate business from the venue we used. I did not realize that no one would find my blog unless it had enough traffic and when I did, I almost quit. But then after some good advice and encouragement I started posting (I am almost one month into it). It is addicting and challenging. Some of my challenges have been, questioning what do I want to bring to the blog world, what do I have to offer that is not already being done (this is where I first got discouraged), what is my goal with the blog, who is my reader, etc. I have only been seriously blogging for less than a month (everyday!) but already it has helped me grow more as to who I am as a designer, what my strengths are, and what it is that I am trying to accomplish with blogging. It has given me a new drive; it is challenging me to come out of my comfortable place and risk and grow. And it is exhilarating to find that I have a comment or a new 'friend' who is actually reading and liking what I am writing. Thank you for sharing all your ideas – your advice has been invaluable to me. xo

  • Debby says:

Congratulations Maria! I've been reading and sharing your blog with friends and family for nearly 2 years now, too, and always look forward to the next one. Beautiful pics, great ideas, refreshingly authentic and good advice on so many topics, including, of course, all these blogging tips. Many thanks!

  • Erika says:

Awesome – and I love that you referenced Penelope Trunk's and Angie's blogs too. All my faves!

  • Darcy from The I.Design Box says:

The perfect bit of motivation I needed today to write a creative post! When life gets crazy, busy, and stressful it's hard to commit to being creative… when in reality I've realized this is sometimes what I need to BE CREATIVE (it's cathartic and actually relaxing for me to write). Thanks for sharing the tips and congrats on two years!

  • Ada @ New York says:

It's great being TWO !!! Congrats on 2 years of growth, authenticity, sharing, and love. Looking fwd to reading more from you … expert 2 year old 😉

  • Kimberly Grigg says:

Congratulations on your two years of successful blogging! Enjoyed our dinner conversation about blogging and designing. Be sure to check out Knotting Hill's "It's So Fabulous!" blog. Turns out we veered away from our business name, too, but this is a statement that I often use, and my existing clients warmed up to it really well! And hey, fabulous is always "in". Keep up the good work!

  • Amy @MaisonDecor says:

Maria, well said! again! you have a voice that is unique and I love seeing your post when it pops up on my sidebar. great tips for bloggers, simply stated.

  • Andrea Martin says:

This is such great advice. I'm a new blogger and I'm still trying to figure so much of it out. It's challenging but I love it and I can't wait to see where my blog will be in 2 years. Congratulations!

Great advice! Thanks for sharing the tips.

  • Maya @ Completely Coastal says:

Thanks for sharing this!! The writing part has been a challenge for me, but now I just don't think about it anymore…, or say, don't second guess. I'll be checking out the links -they sound interesting.

  • Donna says:

Maria, Have you really written two whole posts and I missed them? Well, I guess real life does happen. I'm in transition… letting hubby take over the finances after 23 years. That is NOT an easy task! I'm such a type A!!!

Ah well, suffice it to say that while grocery shopping and holding as 'congenial' a conversation with hubby as I could while he discovered the 'true' state of our finances..I've missed a couple of your posts. How funny that you picked this topic!

I was so afraid to be 'me' a year ago, and in many ways that has changed dramatically. I discovered that there weren't as many 'naysayers' waiting to shoot me down for who I was and what I wanted to share… as I had been afraid there might be.

    Still… I need reminding, to be honest…real..and a friend.

Your posts on how to blog have been instrumental in improving my own. Thanks for the advice. It was invaluable! And your friendship means the world to me.

BTW, I think you might like my post on Galveston. You would have loved Murdoch's Bath house ( a historic shop in Galveston) and the stylish guests who 'pretend' to be bikers..but dress WAY to nice to be so. The SPOT has an illustrious guest list of previous visitors. Many are from The Woodlands..an upscale neighborhood if ever there was one!
Funny..I'm SOooo wanting to paint a lamp on my desk..a nice bright gold/yellow or maybe melon…and I was showing my friend, Gaylan,..which colors were …'In'–according to YOU! It was obvious in the souvenir shop in Galveston, what the new color trends are. I see color everywhere now..thanks to you!

Thank you for opening my eyes, Maria! Waiting to paint…

    Donna @ Comin' Home

ps. I 'dreamed' of a great cheap wall art idea… And if I have time–you'll be the first to hear of it. :o)

  • SusanM says:

The lessons you list really illustrate what I like about your blog (and others blogs that follow the lessons). If you didn't post a few times a week, I would lose interest. And the posts need a good combination of photos and text. I am not as interested in looking at someone's "pretty pictures" with little text — I suppose it is because I want to learn.

    Congratulation Maria!
Has it only been 2 years? Well let me tell you missy, I think you have closer to 5 years worth of wonderful insight here at Colour Me Happy.
I think our blogs met each other close to two years ago and you took me "under your wing" so to speak.
I will always appreciate your time and consideration…remember when I was in a panic over doing a sample board for my neighbor? You gave me great advice. Remember when I had that "Debbie Downer" leaving me comments? You gave me great advice. Remember when I wanted to paint my master bedroom pink? You gave me great advice.
And then you said you would ride the bus with me…that was the best.
You continue to support and inspire so many women Maria, that is why we love Colour Me Happy & you!

  • Grace @ Sense and Simplicity says:

Great post. I think you must be a hoot with your drama queen stories. I so agree one is either teaching or entertaining on your blog – mind you I'm not sure which one I'm doing (haha). I love how you analyze things.

Congrats on your blogiversary! I have been following your blog for sometime and it is always informative. Thanks for the tips on writing a blog, they are extremely helpful. I recently started my blog and share your concern about not feeling like a 'writer'. I often stress about writing a business letter, but find writing a blog is different. I am able to express myself…like you said write like I talk.

2 things (for your 2 years?):

Love "Martha Stewart got rich teaching us all how to do it ourselves. " true, that, but I tend to forget that, when I watch Martha…she now has such a large staff, and specialists for each area (crafts, garden, cooking, pets, weddings, etc); My ex used to say our garden would have looked like Martha's if we had a staff of gardeners, lol

#8 about posting only happy, positive content is too true! I wrote something negative, because I was unhappy, and everyone else commenting on the site I was referring to had been negative/angry; I even gave it a second thought, but hoped the negativity would give me 'currency' and 'conflict/drama'. It didn't, and 2 years later, I had to remove it (because I'm now trying to un-burn that bridge) and recently re-edited that post to a much nicer (and better! also more interesting and readable!) rant=now rave, (instead of my complaining rant then).

If I had listened to my better self, I wouldn't have had a rant that needed fixing (=work) later.

So start off positively above all else, if, for no other reason, then saving re-editing! 🙂
