Ever since I shared my first colourful ceiling, I get lots of questions about choosing a paint colour for your ceiling that’s not white! Well, today I’m sharing all the details to help you choose a colourful ceiling.

This week’s Colour Rescue episode is about ceilings.

Do they all have to be white?

This is what we’re exploring, so I thought we’d do a tour of the painted ceilings in my new house!

When we took possession of this home, all the walls and ceilings from top to bottom in this house were varying shades of taupe.

Since I was forced to paint them, I decided to add colour wherever it made sense. I was paying to paint them anyway so they might as well add a layer of joy to my life which is what colour always does.

Here’s what my entry (above) staircase and living room looked like when we took possession.

You’ve already seen my primary bedroom ceilings in this post.

Here’s the bathroom before (below):

And here’s the after:

And here’s what the all taupe primary bedroom looked like.

Wait until you see it now! When you see the after in the video keep in mind it’s still a work in progress. I still need to recover the headboard (it arrived in the colour it is now) and I need drapery. . . right now, however my landscape is what is getting done.

Last chance to train with me in 2023

Before I turn you loose on this Colour Rescue episode, I wanted to remind you that time is running out to sign up for my Dallas course in a few weeks. Because I won’t be back in Dallas in 2024.

In just two days you’ll learn your way around all the neutral undertones to be ahead of the curve now that beige is back! Plus you’ll learn all about decorating with colour, working with a timeless aesthetic, the best decorating and styling tips and more!

⭐️ Dallas Meet Up – ALL are invited! Join us in the bar at Sixty Vines Uptown from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, November 9.

Here’s a quick 1-minute video with reviews from participants this Fall. Can you relate to their feelings about colour?

Say goodbye to boring white ceilings

What I want for you this week is that you get inspired to paint your ceilings a colour! It’s a missed opportunity for colour and a spot people often overlook!

Some of my ceilings I’ve painted a very pale aqua and I love the look. It’s very subtle and reminds me of pale sky

Maria, I followed your advice (thank you) that you can paint your bathroom celing a colour even if the rest of the ceilings in the house are white. I used an aqua colour at half strength of the colour on the wall and now have what appears to be a two-plane wrap of the same watery blue green. It completely lifts what might otherwise be a boring bathroom of white subway, white fittings, white cork flooring. And that’s before the room is finished! (I still have blinds and a shower curtain to make – winter project.)

Maria – I love your book White is Complicated, which I’m poring over constantly.

Would you mind sharing the specific shades of yellow paint you put on your ceilings?

    Love your blog!

Your painted ceilings look great but what color are the walls in the main house, kitchen etc that coordinate with the ceilings

    Gorgeous! Love your new home!

  • Brenda says:

Is it ok to paint a stippled (popcorn) ceiling a colour? I do know that if you paint it you will never be able to scrape the stipple off, but that doesn’t matter so much. I just want to know if it would look weird.

    • Lauren says:

Same! I am stuck with popcorn ceilings, which I try to ignore. I’d love to have them scraped but I have seen some of your makeovers where they were left as-is. Would love to hear your thoughts.

    • Celia Thirwall says:

I was wondering the same thing too! Popcorn ceilings everywhere! Would love to put some color up above – especially in a small room like a walk in closet or powder room. Thank you!!

  • Trudi Rowe says:

Wow, you have convinced me to paint my living room tray ceiling blue! Your house looks so wonderful, I LOVE what you have done.

    Best,
    Trudi R.

Trudi–I’m going to do the same!

  • Emily says:

If you have lower ceilings, is it best to paint them the same color as the walls in a flat sheen? Im getting ready to repaint my home soon and ceiling color is the hardest choice.

  • Stacy says:

I would only paint the ceiling a color in a small room where it’s easy enough to repaint. I prefer white ceilings–they look clean and expansive. I had to paint all the ceilings and all the walls in this house because the builder painted them all shell white, which is quite dingy, and the first owners did nothing about that. After paying for that, I swore I will not buy another house where I have to paint all the ceilings. So be careful with the advice to treat the ceiling as another wall! It’s more expensive to have ceilings painted than walls because even painters don’t like to do ceilings. If you don’t think you’re staying in a house for the long-haul, painting ceilings in a color might turn off potential buyers. It’s not a sellers’ market in most areas now.

In the end, i would rather be faced with the problem of painting a ceiling than ripping out bad accent tile, and trendy kitchens and bathrooms. Maria

What about sloped ceilings? Will it still look good to paint your ceilings a color if you do not have crown molding?

  • Jeanette says:

    Love your ceilings!

Just painted my 8ft kitchen ceiling SW Topsail! Been wanting to do it for a long time and finally bit the bullet and did it. Could not be happier!

I would love to know the colors of your lavender ceiling, as well as the wall color in your bedroom. I just love that combination.
