I have known my good friend Patricia Kramer since 2000 when I first set up my colour and decorating business. Back then it was called One Day Design, BS. Before Staging, haha. Patricia has worked in the design industry for many years and is the Textile Instructor at Vancouver Community College.
Patricia was responsible for putting my name forward in the summer of 2007 when the Dean at Vancouver Community College was looking for a Colour Theory Instructor for their Interior Design program.
When I sat down with the Dean to discuss the curriculum, she announced, “You can create it.” That was music to my ears since, as you know from reading my blog, colour theory is not that useful when it comes to choosing colour for clients.
Every week for the first semester, I would teach a class and then go home and continue to write and fine-tune the next lesson plan. Three years later, when I was in my final semester, I looked out at a room full of designers and design enthusiast students and realized that half of them were there as a result of reading my blog. That’s when Terreeia declared, “We need to create our own three-day workshop.”
And that’s what we did. My first True Colour Expert workshop was held in Vancouver in May 2010 and for the next three years I’ve met and taught some of the best designers, decorators, colour consultants and colour enthusiasts on the planet.
And now, another three years have passed and I’m thrilled to be able to announce another milestone. IDCEC is the governing body that approves courses they feel meet their standards for interior designers to maintain their professional status.
So, as of today, Maria Killam’s Specify Colour with Confidence True Colour Expert Training is IDCEC approved. And we popped some champagne to celebrate!
Irene Hill, my most fabulous Design Associate worked very hard submitting everything, and believe me, it was quite the process. She arrived in the office this morning with a delighted, “I have news!” expression on her face.
So, if you are an interior designer who needs CEUs to maintain your ASID or IDC status, my three-day, Specify Colour with Confidence Training is now IDCEC approved!
There are still a few spaces left for my course coming up in Toronto on April 24, 25 & 26. Hurry and register as the early bird discount is only available until April 3, register here.
And I’ve finally found a fun location in downtown Toronto close to Bloor Street. We will now be in a classroom at Trinity College on the beautiful grounds of the University of Toronto!
I will also have a special guest with us for three days. Janice Lindsay! Out of all the colourists in the world who I quote in my workshop, it’s Janice.
I would come up with a theory about colour inside my system and how it works, then when I read her book, she was saying exactly what I was thinking. So the quotes in my course are directly from Janice Lindsay’s book, All About Colour.
I’m very excited that she will be with us! Janice Lindsay will also be presenting on one of the three days about the colour white! We’re all obsessed with white these days, so it’s perfect. Her talk will be:
White or Wrong: An interesting look at the one colour that is exquisitely elegant and or painfully banal depending on how and where and why it is used. Janice feels that more colour mistakes involve white than any other colour. Learn tips for mastering the most challenging of hues. (If you are a firm believer in white ceilings and trim, this talk is a must!)
And then, Thursday evening of the training, we always go out to a restaurant for dinner. But first Janice will host as for a cocktail at her house which is 3 blocks from Trinity College! And a block from the restaurant.
Doesn’t it look like Harry Potter is about to fly out of a window any second?
So, join in me in Toronto, April 24, 25 & 26. And in Vancouver on May 29, 30 & 31. We will add more dates after that very soon!
Is it time for you to be the one who understands colour like no one else in your city?
It’s not too late to join me tomorrow (Thursday) if you are painting your exterior this year, don’t miss my ‘How to Choose Exterior Colours for your Home’ Live Webinar at 11:00 am PST time.

Congratulations Maria! That is fantastic news! I live in Texas and would love to participate in your class! Unfortunately, after a flight, hotel, and car it is out of my budget. I have your book and color boards, which are fabulous but I am wanting more! Have you thought about webcasting your class? I would do it in a minute!!!
Sincerely ~
Melissa
Great news! I’m with Melissa however on the cost thing, all in its a pretty expensive three days for the U.S. folk. I too would purchase the webcast, looking forward to the exterior one today! …can you tip your hat if you will be adding any US dates/cities??
Thanks, Cathy

Hi Lucie, I don’t know anything about their Advance paint but here is a post about sheens: https://mariakillam.com/2009/07/how-to-choose-the-right-paint-shine.html/
Hope this helps,
Maria
Very impressive. I am not a professional designer, but I, too, would be interested in a webinar. So, for your next project . . . .
Congrats Maria and Terreeria, you guys make a great team, that was such a great idea to branch out of your comfort zone and do your own thing! Kudos!

Susan you are so funny!! xo Maria
AWESOME! Congrats on your accomplishment, and many wishes for continued success!!
Maria, this is the perfect credibility you and the course deserve!….Question: (not applicable to me, but…) for those who need the CEU’s, etc. is the credit retroactive for those who have already taken the course? Just wondering. I’m in on that glass of champagne!!! xo, P.
Great news! Would love it if you could bring your class to MN—it isn’t THAT far away from Canada…..
Great news indeed! Congratulations!
I do agree about mistakes with white, as it is the one color I have the most problems with!
Yay You!!!! That is awesome! Congratulations!!!
Congratulations, Maria! This is so exciting for you, and such a great marker in your journey, which BTW, seems to souring up, up, UP!!! Proud to have been in your first TCE class!

Congatulations, Maria! Think back to your goals for the year and there’s some kind of wonderful energy going on for you . Here it is only the end of March and look how much you’ve already accomplished. Way to go! Here in Arizona, I’m with other too-far-away-ers such as Melissa in Texas and would would love it if you could come my way one day. However, if not in the foreseeable future, some type of webcast/webinar would be super, especially if we can get around the “that color looks grey on my monitor, not green” issue. I learned so much from your “37 Days” series and, even though I’m not a professional designer, I love having my creative juices activated – it makes me happy!. Way to go, gal!!!
Having Janice at the workshop makes me want to take it again! I’d love to hear her. Congrats, Maria!
I second that! I’d love to take the class again, just to hear Janice! And in Toronto to boot… looks gorgeous!!
Congrats, Maria!! 😀
My Darling Maria!
Congratulations! As you know I have always been a big believer in you and I cannot tell you how delighted I am for you and your team of helpers. You are right that I feel that I need a little credit, but only because I recognize talent, and babe you have talent!
I throw tons of love at you! Keep up the good work!
Best wishes Patricia
Congratulations Maria and Irene! Your talents and hard work has paid off and will continue to be such a benefit to those who take your course. All the best to you! Nancy
Congratulations. Proof that anything good is worth waiting for and hard work really pays off!
Wowee! It was only a matter of time, of course!
Congratulations on a well-deserved credential!
Congratulations! A well-deserved feather in your cap.
Count me in with the crew who would like an online Color Class option.
Congrats Maria, I would feel like I’d arrived if I worked in this setting. Teaching designers how to acquire their personal style and give them loads of color information is the bomb, do people still say that ‘the bomb’?
Taking our business to the next level is very exciting, again, ConGratUlations!
whoo hooo! you go girl!!!
congrats from Toronto….hopefully we can touch base again soon,
Susan
What a fantastic accomplishment! Congratulations!
Congratulations! And kudos to Irene; I can only imagine how many hoops you had to jump through on your way to becoming an accredited trainer. Good on all y’all!
CHEERS!!!
Congrats, Maria! I’m proud of you.
What a team! So happy that I took your workshop:)
Looking forward to adding to my 50 colours…hope it won’t be long before we can purchase the new boards.
Congratulations to all of you….I can hear the champagne corks popping from here!
