It’s new build season, and I want to help you create your dream home. So I’m sharing all my best tips for making smart choices so you can avoid installing finishes you’ll soon fall out of love with.
It’s easy to get the impression that every house will eventually need updating and that’s just the way it is. Especially if you watch all the home renovation shows that inevitably start with safety glasses and a sledgehammer. That’s because we are marketed trends. You likely aren’t even aware just how much what you’ve saved to your inspiration board is trendy because you might not be conscious of the subtle ways trends seep into our hearts. It’s inevitable really.
And when you walk into any tile store or big box depot, the trendiest fixtures and finishes are on display.
In most cases, if you’re going for a timeless look, you’ll need to know exactly what to ask for because those finishes aren’t on display.
But I’m here to tell you: it IS possible to plan your new build or renovation with timeless longevity in mind. Having to update things with an expensive and tiresome renovation is not an inevitability!
If you do it right, in a decade or so, you may want to simply refresh your decorating – a fresh coat of paint, new upholstery and textiles. But you shouldn’t have to get out the sledgehammer!
It will take some homework to learn how to plan a timeless home (and that’s where I’m here to help!) But it’s absolutely possible and easily attainable. It’s a much better approach than taking your chances choosing whatever catches your eye and hoping for the best.
In today’s episode, I’m walking you through the right steps to take to make sure that your new build comes together in a way that is perfectly coordinated, timeless and versatile for the long run.

I love the small tile advice for the bathroom.
If you are concerned about the bathroom being slippery when wet: for bathrooms with accessible walk in showers, be sure to use a small tile, like penny tile. The grout lines will reduce the slipperiness.
Great advice on what to choose when. I, of course, have spent the last 3 months trying to pick a paint color–first, instead of last. (Still think it will be Soft Chamois, but maybe not!)
My question/comment is about flooring. When you talk about flooring it seems to be wood/wood-like or tile. Never carpet. I know many younger people dislike carpet but there are die-hard carpet lovers out there like me. (It’s my last house so I want timeless carpet.) There is almost no one online discussing carpet. Would you consider offering up some style (high/low, plush/berber/frisee/cut patterned) guidance for nylon carpet?
She has some posts about carpet! Here is one that is a good place to start.

really good question! style guidance for carpet would be so helpful. I lucked out once and chose a carpet I love; but I would appreciate concrete advice:-)
You always say Light or med brown hardwood is timeless. If you live in Florida with the humidity, pool, sand and hurricanes would you do a tile that looks like a hardwood in a light or med brown color? If not what kind of tile? No laminate or LVP Thank you
