The Best Way to Plan Outfits for any Trip

Took this picture from our suite (above)

Terreeia and I spent an extra day in Dallas after my Specify Colour with Confidence™ course ended there last week so we did a little shopping (most of my outfit actually).

After all, we were only home for two days, in time to pack up for a 10 day vacation in Los Cabos and bring my Mom! She’s never been to Mexico, or an all-inclusive, and we were thrilled to treat her!

We have had record rainfalls this winter in Vancouver, the power was out for most of the day right after we left town as reported by my sister Elizabeth! Then she watched a huge cedar fall over in her yard over her morning cup of coffee. Drama we missed out on last week as we lounged by the pool, haha.

Just for fun, it’s a fashion post today!

My best tip for planning outfits is to pin them all to one board in Pinterest.

Whenever I’m packing for a trip, I scroll through to get ideas on building outfits inside my own closet! Check out my style board here.

Also if you have an item of clothing you’d like to bring but need an outfit to go with it, search ‘outfit with orange shorts’ for example, and you’ll get lots of ideas!

I also keep an on-going list in my iPhone notes and I add to it when I’m away so when I’m here and thinking, ‘I wish I had two long skirts with me instead of one’, I add it to the list for next time.

I loved this turquoise bathing suit cover-up and it comes in other colours here!

We are at the Bonito Pueblo Pacifica which at first I thought was too beige-on-beige (for me) until we left this resort to go to the sister property which is like a city! We were happy to be back here after that, especially because spring break has just started! The zen like atmosphere here is wonderful and it’s adults only.

Rule of thumb; IMHO basically choose a wardrobe that a) suits your destination needs and b) your itinerary and include items you pack; serve more than one purpose and can be readily mix and matched. -Brenda-

  • What a fun trip – how nice that you treated your mom! We’ve been several times to an all inclusive in Playa del Carmen and just love it. It’s so easy to go there with family – when my boys are hungry, we just walk up to the little restaurant by the pool. You don’t have to think about a thing- it’s so relaxing.

    Love the outfit…love the colors.

How awesome that you were able to bring your mom on such a fun trip.

    You look happy.
    🙂

This post immediately made me smile. You all look so happy and relaxed. That’s what vacation is all about. Never thought about pinning my own outfits like that. Good idea!

  • Lynne says:

Love it. Love the outfits, love the photos, love the happiness!

  • My husband and I stayed at that resort two years ago and loved it! I can also vouch for the excellent shopping in Dallas!

  • Mary-Illinois says:

What a fun girl’s trip! And your colorful outfit is perfect.

  • Sandy says:

Great color, and suddenly I’m wondering what you wear when you go to New York? Do you wear black like everyone else?

What a fun post! I’m heading to Bermuda in May for my husband’s banking gig (yawn…), but we’re going 3 days early with friends. My husband has never been to an all inclusive (except Disney World!) so I’m hoping he falls in love. I guess I’ll just plan some fabulous outfits to add to the experience! Haha!

Love the picture of your mom. My mom and I went to the Bahamas together last year, just the two of us, and my favorite pictures from that trip are the ones with her in them.

Great picture of you and Terreeia! I always wondered if I was pronouncing her name correctly in my head, and it turns out I was!

Maria, hope you are all rested up … ☺. Mexico is one of my favourite travel destinations as well. We usually stay at the Prestige Barceló Maya Palace and just love it but admit I am not much of a beach/pool bunny as I am an archeological seeker who enjoys visiting the many ancient site seeing ruins that Mexico has to offer which drives my husband crazy as he is more of a water-baby type but after fourty-three years of marriage we manage to compromise …. winks. -Brenda-

Another great post — would not have thought of using pintrest or a board!

You all look terrific — great photography!

  • Jane says:

great photos! The beige on beige is a great backdrop although I also think I would get tired of looking at it. the guests need to supply the colour!

  • Renee says:

How I plan….I start with putting bottoms on the bed, then stack on 3 tops for each bottom, ensuring that some tops are inter-changeable with the bottoms. I then add jackets or wraps on top of those.
In total, I bring 3 tops for each bottom, perhaps 1 or 2 dresses, 2 or 3 versatile jackets or wraps, jewelry that goes with almost every outfit, no more than 3 pairs of shoes i.e. sandals, covered flats and a pair of heels, 2 swimsuits and 1 cover-up. When I move around a lot during a trip, I bring less because no one knows what I wore 3 days before.
Regarding jewelry: it’s the number one item stolen from hotel rooms – the less I bring, the less I worry about theft. On my recent 30-day trip to very hot South East Asia, I wore these every day, everywhere: https://www.etsy.com/transaction/1064628869
    and https://www.etsy.com/transaction/1089557990.

Like most women, I used to pack far too much because of a serious lack of planning. I would curse at myself as I hauled my heavy suitcase up flights of stairs when there weren’t elevators. It took me years to finally get it down to a science. I pack in a way that allows me to dress appropriately for any occasion except the most formal, without having an overabundance of clothes.
I can now travel for a month with a much lighter 24″ suitcase (with room to spare for purchases) and a small carry-on/tote. The bonus of all this planning is that I never have to worry about exceeding airlines’ baggage weight. That’s freedom!
Versatility of each item is key.
    Happy travels everyone!

    Hey Maria,
You keep getting more beautiful every day. I’ve been a fan of your blog a long time and to see how your personal fashion sense has evolved along with your work has been fun – Wow. Glad you and your family had a chance to go on this wonderful vacation.

  • Pursuit says:

Ooops, meant to add a word of thanks for your suggestions and for Renee’s thoughtful response.

  • Marsha says:

I use a rolling rack in my bedroom, pull everything I think I would love to take, accessories, shoes, everything, even jewelry. Then I start taking away.
For me, this works. I would NEVER be able to do Pinterest!

For me, this works. I would NEVER be able to do Pinterest! From mt experience at Sak’s 5th Avenue as a Stylist I know how to use a basic color then add 1 or 2 accent colors for everything else.

Hi. So much fun. Y’all look great!! I laughed when you said too much beige. I can identify with that statement. Of course your mom would have on a bright yellow cape. She’s the one who started the love of color for you.!! Have fun.

I have learned to try on outfits and then layout them out. Then I take pictures on phone so I have all my outfits all planned out before I leave!
