Exterior in Grays; Before & After

By 08/11/2010January 27th, 201727 Comments
Cathleen hired me to help her choose colours for her house in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Here is Cathleen’s house before. She wanted to update it with some new colours because she will be selling in a few years:

Such a pretty setting!

And here is the after (below), nice to break up all the red:

The gray looks lovely – so homey. I can just see it at Christmas with a wreath on the front door.

Great colour, I love the two greys.

Our house is white stucco with a red roof, and we are in the process of painting the shutters & trim Hale Navy & Whale Gray. (benjamin moore colours). I find blues and gray's very calming.

    Dear Maria,
You have done a wonderful job! This house is a thousand times prettier than before! It is definitely the right color!

Oh wow, you did a great job, Maria! I love the grey toned blue with the quiet, grey green toned door. Beautiful.

Grey is such a nice colour. We built our house about 8 years ago (from brick) and haven't yet painted it as I kind of like the natural look but we are thinking about painting it but just not sure what colour. I wonder what grey would look like on brick?

    Love it… Love it!!!

Beautiful color choices for that setting and I didnt even notice the red roof until you mentioned breaking up all the red. I guess that is why you are the color expert! I would just pop the front door with a bright spot of color; red, black, mallard green etc.

  • Stacey says:

I love that grey colour and how it contrasts with the red. Beautiful outdoors too!

  • Elizabeth Brown says:

    Excellent job Maria!

  • NYCLQ says:

I wish we could paint our exterior gray! (I guess that's one of the downsides to living in an association/community.) At least I have our interior walls in shades of gray (it's VERY versitile!)

    Thanks for sharing!

Great Transformation! I love the gray and it looks so much better being able to differentaite the roof from the house. Nice color choice.

I'm loving gray these days too! I painted my kitchen a gray called Seashell gray before I started reading your blog and before I even knew that this was a new thing. Actually I thought I was being different. Lol This small town I live in where most still have wallpaper in floral prints all over every wall in the house, it was different here I guess. Now I'm trying to figure out the hallway colors and living room. I so want to do fresh green and plum in my living room. I did green and blue in the kitchen so I'm thinking this will still work for flow. I know I want the accents in the green and plum but how do you do a wall color that matches that except a beige or white? Or is this a case where you should go white? With medium wood floors that seems like so many neutrals.

    Maria,

Love the new gray color. Of course I love gray myself and my home is yellow, gray trim, white accent trim and French doors. I would keep the same color theme.

Oh such a sore subject…..I live in an wonderful condo, a townhouse from the early 1970's….interesting in many ways, but not the dark brown exterior wood siding…..hung vertically….

The gray looks nice but I would have stained the screen enclosure and rear railing white. I think that the brown looks terrible against the gray.

  • Henna @ AboutCabinets Blog says:

wow – these are some great home ideas, i think exterior in greys are likely to last long as they have got nothing to lose,

  • sandrajonas.com says:

What a difference!! Good work, does not even look like the same house. BRAVA!

  • joanne says:

How do I go about finding a vinyl siding close to this color? It’s hard to tell on-line exactly what grey to look for.
I like the Kendall Charcoal door, would it look okay with black shutters or should they be Kendall also?
