Colour Trends for 2010

By 01/13/2010January 16th, 202044 Comments

Next to Turquoise, Mardi Grape is the hot colour for 2010 as predicted by the Colour Marketing Group (of which I am a member) and one of the images from my website was used to illustrate this new colour story which was released right before Christmas 2009.

Here’s the press release:

My monthly newsletter will also be going out this week and the special article only available to newsletter subscribers will be “Which colours you’ll be decorating with next”. . .

Earth tones and spicy hues have been gracing our homes for years, giving them a warm and cozy feel; however, lately I’ve noticed that colour is taking a new direction. We already know that gray is the new brown and white is the latest trend in kitchens, but what about colour. . .

Click here to subscribe to my newsletter (it’s free) and this week you’ll get the rest of the article.

    Way to go Maria!!

  • Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions says:

They painted this color {looks just like the room you have pictured} in the office at my day job. My specific office is a lighter shade. I don't particularly care for it myself, but apparently the boss used it in her dining room and just loves it.

  • Cristin says:

Mardi grape, hmmm. I like it. I agree too, gray is the new brown.

    Great post, as always!!!

    xo,

Just found you, it's been fun reading your post very right on the money! If you get a chance check us out at http://tori-macgregorscottage.blogspot.com/

  • The Blasphemous Fiendess says:

I love the gray/brown purple colour. I contemplated doing my bedroom that colour and still am considering it-but my husband would kill me if I suggested painting. He painted the whole house less than two years ago.

  • aneyefordetail says:

I'm not a big fan of purple, but this just might be ok..the gray and brown ingredients here make it succeed beautifully. Sort of reminds me of the new Chanel nail color "Particuliere".

  • chanteusevca says:

I'm liking that Mardi Grape. Not sure where I could use in in this house, but I'm tempted to try it somewhere. Interesting that most of the colors listed by CMG have touches of gray in them. The change from beige/browns to grays is a refreshing one for me.

  • Sara @ Russet Street Reno says:

Purple? But I just got the gray down! I used Coventry Gray in my new 'dressing room' and would love your opinion!

  • DesignTies says:

I painted our guest bathroom ICI Purple Granite a few years ago. It's also a purple-grey-brown, and it's a gorgeous colour 🙂 I'm curious to see how it compares to Mardi Grape.

It's about time purple gets the respect it deserves!! 🙂

  • Karena says:

Mardi Grape, yes, I really like this a lot!! The others will be fun to experiment with! Lots of inspiration here!!

  • Karena says:

Ps Shades of purple are always regal and elegant

  • Jane says:

    Maria,
I always learn so much from your blog. Thank you!!!
I'm not sure I could about "Mardi grape"…I am not a fan of all things purple. (Perhaps it was because of the gaudy purple cheerleading uniforms I had to wear many, many years ago.

  • Lavender and Lilies says:

I agree on the gray. It's my go to color now. I love the purple. I also saw some really deep blues in my decorating mags this month and I love it!

  • "Yeah, that works..!" says:

yeah! One of my favorite colors. Maybe now I can justify the purple bedroom I've been wanting since I was a kid..

  • Dagny @ Beautiful Living says:

Mardi grape, what a fabulous name!! 😀 Plum is the new accent color in our living room, looks very similar! (or am I wrong?, you're the expert! ;))

  • pve design says:

One of my favorite profs in college would speak all about color and she would say "Aubergine" with a thick NY accent. I love that color paired with gray.
    Way to go Maria….

  • Things That Inspire says:

Congratulations on the great recognition, Maria!

Oh, gray – this is one of those colors that I don't naturally gravitate to (my downstairs has warm accents – gold), but I have definitely been influenced by all that I see in the magazines and blogging. Someone commented on my 'virtual home' that they can tell I like gray! I was surprised…and yet, it is such a beautiful and soothing color that has so many tonal possibilities and variations.

  • Things That Inspire says:

Forgot to comment on the purple – the cover of a recent Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles had a condo done by Bob Brown, and it was almost entirely done in purple! A vivid, vibrant purple. The cover blurb was about color – it was the perfect picture to illustrate what some see as a return to color!

  • Erika @ BluLabel Bungalow says:

Hmm, I'm thinking Mardi Grape, combined with the new black and a splash of lime!

  • Annie @ The House That Jade Built says:

I'm glad to hear that colors are coming back in since I've been doing the bold colors a few years now! I want to finish a guest bedroom in our basement & paint it purple. That's the plan anyway – my poor hubs always has a project list waiting for him 🙂

  • Naomi says:

I like a nice deep purple, but I'm not sure if I'm buying it as a neutral. Maybe I'm thinking it's not gender neutral, because I don't see my Boy going for it one bit. Fun to see it in other interiors, though!

  • Eliana Tomás says:

love the colour maria. thank you for sharing with all of us. really beautiful! i'm delighted!

(i'm waiting for the catalogue from portugal to send it to you)

  • My Notting Hill says:

I'm feeling the selection of grape much more than Pantone's choice of turquoise. Your grape room is warm and gorgeous while being new. The grape choice makes me think of John Saldino's Veranda Designer Show House challenge where he drew inspiration from the movie Girl With a Pearl Earring. Plus I like grape much more than turquoise!

  • Debra Phillips says:

    maria;

just returning from market; tons of turquoise and you could see the budding of purples. do love the brown/grey undertones making it more of a neutral.

  • Between you, me and the Fencepost says:

When I think purple I see bright and gaudy but not in that picture it's a gorgous decadent purple – cozy too. I now have to paint the rest of my living room to match my purple couch. : )

  • SogniSorrisi says:

I'm not sure about this particular purple but I sure do love purple.

  • Marty J says:

I would love to know what color (BM) is to you? It sure would help us non pros head in a positive direction. Your blog has provided lots of help over the past few months as I picked a greige for our house. We love it!

  • PIX@LANDOIMAGES says:

Congrats once again, Maria! I am so happy you are getting more and more recognition. (What did that horoscope say?) You rooms always look so well put together, too. Lastly (for today), I applaud the time you take to make sure that every single blog entry you post offers readers four things: 1. beauty
    2. inspiration 3. information/education (and #2 and #3 together can add up to new confidence in making colour choices)
    4. entertainment
Reading your blog is always time well spent. Thank you!

  • Linda at Lime in the Coconut! says:

Hmmm…Mardi grape looks like a second cousin to the mauve of the 80's…remember that color?

I am…as we speak painting my back door red with intuition of pink. Because.

  • pve design says:

    M-
Love for you to select a pantone color for my site and blog, I am ready to make a change from my green. Let me know if you are interested. Loving a neutral or a new color.

  • Rachel says:

i think purples are tricky because their undertones can vary so greatly- on the one hand you've got blue, and on the other hand, red. Two colors, from complete opposite sides of the spectrum, and yet they both flank violet. And along with that comes the vastly different psychological associations for each. I agree, looks a bit like mauve, reinvented for 2010 and it's 30 year anniversary come-back.

  • Traci Zeller Designs says:

I love that gorgeous room, Maria. The color is beautiful!

  • Acanthus and Acorn says:

I never thought of myself as liking purple. But I did at some point because I used purple toile in my guest bedroom years back. I still have the most amazing purple embossed oval lamp shades lined in gold foil. Can't image ever letting them go either. Lately, I do find myself drawn to the purples once again. Especially the plums, mardi grape-a new term for me, and auberbergine(minus the NY accent-pve…too funny)are fabulous. I love the room you did above with the sectional. Congtats.

  • Gwen says:

I can't stand anything that even hints at purple. Thank goodness there are so many other colors to choose from.

  • Lisa says:

More congrats Maria! I tell ya…2010 is ALREADY off to a great start for you and you deserve it. You work so hard and make it look so easy. Love the mardi-grape, very rich alternative to my usual "go to" browns.
I left you a much belated thank you note this evening at TLPC. You're the best!

  • AB HOME Interiors says:

Hey girl! Hope you had a fabulous holiday. Yes I know I have been MIA. SO sorry. Been busy blah, blah, blah, right? Well I got an email today from Mary about a teleseminar that she is having this year. I think she sent it to you to. ANyways, I signed up for it. How are you doing on your business forum with her? Hope all is well-great post on the up and comings for color!

  • Design Wanna-be says:

Yay. Good for you colour trend-setter!

  • Carol Ann says:

We have noticed lately alot of purple undertone in our brown fabrics and area rugs…not to sure if this is a good thing when we are so limited in both…
Aways learning to deal with weird undertones, makes my days interesting and long…
    Regards, Carol Ann

  • Pickles n' Peanut butter says:

great design blog. Thanks for all the tips and inspiration!

  • Vanessa says:

Congrats on the media mention! I too am not a purple fan but I do like the pale mauve greys.

  • Turkey Creek Lavender says:

I love the Mardi Grape! I've been a fan of this type of color forever. I don't really see it as a mauve. I had mauve in my wedding 30 years ago (and yes, that dates me!) and it wasn't nearly this neutral, or rich, or deep, or lovely. It's surprisingly beautiful neutral. Love your wonderful blog!

  • micah @ the yellow front door says:

That purple room is gorgeous! I'm off to subscribe to your newsletter…
