Renovating my House

The View from my Kitchen

By 08/12/2012July 26th, 201718 Comments

I styled my bookshelves and took photos today to show you. Then when I sat down to write this post and inserted all the images, they were just bad and colourless. So I need to take better photos. Sigh. I’m tired, and my vacation is over.

So instead you’re getting a sneak peek. I had to style them very simply because you can see this side of the bookshelves in the family room from the moment you enter through the back door and into the laundry room. Then from there you walk into the kitchen and through that doorway is this bookshelf.

And as I recently posted. The first thing you see when you walk into any space is very important.

I’ll take better photos later.

Have a wonderful week my lovelies!

Hi, yesterday the Mitchell & Gold catalog arrived…do you have these guys up north? It’s a bit out of my $ range but I love he pics….lots of blue, greys and mixes of browns. I’ll send it to you if wanted.

Mess those books up a bit Maria! Hmmm, I think I prefer to see books stacked the traditional way. Love the color of those Nat Geo’s though!

  • I like how you grouped the whites and yellows together, then threw in the random colours in the middle. Never seen bookshelves done like that – cool.

Good Morning Maria, We all know the feeling of (ugh),
transition from vacation mode to back to the treadmill…ok to cut yourself a break! Beautiful symmetry & order! Is this the room that the Kivik is in?
Can you take a photo of that sometime and send to me?
Here we are trying to get into the 6:00am wake time to get our grandson off to school. Whew! It’s been years since we had to do this…transitions!!!

You have created a monster Maria. I see what you’re doing to your place and I am ripping mine apart. My accent wall with the green undertone (which I never noticed before) has got to go. The rest of the paint in the room has a brown undertone. As always, thanks so much for the inspiration!

    Looks great! Nice progress.

  • hey Maria..what happened to all that photo shop training??? (Just kidding). I think the book cases look fabulous. I’m all about order and symmetry so for me they are perfection…and the pop of yellow is so you!

I’m sorry your vacation is over. Hard to get back to work isn’t it? Be sure to plan something special coming up soon- it will help make it a little better! xo

    Hi Maria,
What I am getting from this photo is that you are trying to create some balance. I must admit I was suprised to see the way you arranged your books this time. This would not work for me because I like to mix it up. You have your own reasons I know:) Looking forward to seeing your new kitchen.

  • Sherl Wheeler says:

Dear Maria … You bookshelves look very orderly and calm but a little boring. If you are looking for that pop of yellow maybe you could find an old pot ot vase and just spray it yellow. I also hung a photo over the bookshelves at my daughters house and it broke up all the vertical lines…good luck.

    • Maria Killam says:

      Hi Sheri,
Well when you see them from the kitchen you will understand why I did them this way. Mostly they are magazines and coffee tables books and magazines don’t stand up well and the coffee table books are mostly too big to stand up as well. They need to be boring because you can see them from the other end of the house. If they were not such a focal point it would work to be less contrived. Maria

  • I like the simplicity of these bookshelves, they would definitely work for me but I think my kids would have other ideas. One page a day of your new camera manual and you’ll get it Maria!

  • SandyCGC says:

A bit too simple and stylized for me, Maria, with none of the whimsy that makes you YOU. It may be the first thing you see when you come in the backdoor but there’s nothing that grabs you and makes you want to come closer and look further. I’d love to see something with the effect of your picture at the end of the front hallway. I may not go that direction when I first enter your house, but I want to check that picture out further at some point in my visit. Just reviewing some of the bookcases in your August 4, 2010 post on making them beautiful, especially the one with the yellow background. Yours is much smaller and less dramatic, but where’s that something special and unexpected that I’ve just got to ask about? xoxo

    Hi Maria,
Maria, you are a fun girl and those bookshelves have boring written all over them!! I am sorry to say. I love almost everything you post but you need to put some life into those shelves. Get rid of some books and add some pictures add something. You have great taste in art, buy some small art pieces mix up the books. If it is the first thing you see when you come in, make it who you are! Full of life!! That is the girl I picture when I read your posts and see your photo’s. That shelf would look perfect in your office.

  • BillP says:

The shelves look great, Maria. I love the balance and the colors, which complement the art and accessories.

I am surprised by all the negative comments- maybe the naysayers should start their own blogs?

  • Carol Hunter says:

Love the whole effect and beautiful colour combinations. What are the wall and trim colours here?

  • Lisa says:

I don’t mind the symmetry or the horizontal book stacking, but I would agree with most that it’s just a little boring…
Have you thought about painting the back wall with an accent color or using a textural wallpaper to give the bookshelves more pop without having to over style the books?

  • Laura Trevey says:

    Hey Maria!

Just popped in to say hello! Love your bookshelves, no neat and orderly 🙂
