Traci Zeller (We do this a lot in New York)
Darryl Carter was part of a panel this morning at breakfast at the top of the Hearst tower. He said his family was first generation so he pretty much had to be a doctor, a lawyer or an Indian Chief. His decorating career was launched when his home was published in Metropolitan Home, that gave his Dad evidence that he could have a career being creative.
“I don’t socialize with my clients until after the project is over because it gives them license to get angry with me”.
He also often turns dining rooms into libraries because they are underused.
Darryl said that the perception is that light neutrals are not family friendly but he will happily specify faux leather for a guestavian chair if necessary.
‘Just because you can gather things, doesn’t mean you know what to do with them’. D. Carter.
At the Kravet/Lee Jofa Showroom at the D&D Building, Alexa Hampton gave a talk and here’s the best of her musings:
“I’ll retire a pattern I’ve used with a client for a few years because if I re-hashed it, I’d be in trouble”.
A designer said that an architect once quoted Alexa when disputing the height of a chair rail the designer had specified. Alexa said “Don’t you ever let anyone use my name to bully you into doing it their way!”
“White…is the equivalent of speaking in a whisper; it is dignified and restrained”
Someone asked her what her three favourite words were (because she loves words), she said she was currently liking the word euphonic. She used it recently in this article for the Wall Street Journal ‘Decorating with End Tables’.
She ended that conversation by saying ‘I don’t mind mispronouncing words on the road to getting them right!‘
Loved her tips, and then I found another interesting article called Rules for Area Rugs.
Which quote is your favourite?

“White… is the equivalent of speaking in a whisper; it is dignified and restrained.”
Absolutely poetic!
I believe in dining rooms as libraries too…but with round tables. Always wanted one – haven’t done it yet!
I love your dress Traci and jeeze, we need to meet after all, we live just miles from each other!
It’s so nice to see recaps from events that I was unable to attend. Great quotes but just a little too much white for me 🙂
OMG that top picture is SO good for so many reasons! It looks like it is the stock photo you change out when you bring the new frame home! Seriously, Traci has to put that up somewhere in her house or her hubby needs to bring it to his office 🙂
I just love you and Traci, even though we’ve never really met. Keep the info coming…it’s so fun to read. And I LOVE all the white!!!

“Just because you can gather things doesn’t mean you know what to do with them”. So true…. I remember working in a camera store once…there were quite a few gadget guys who bought cameras (I guess) just to own them. Most hadn’t a clue how to actually frame up a shot and take a decent photo !!
Anything Alexa says is fine by me, I love her book, it’s so informative and gorgeous.
I think everything Darryl said just made sense – he gets it but he also knows how to design the heck out of a home. I also enjoyed Alexa’s thoughts on a family friendly home too. Great stuff coming out of BlogFest – I enjoyed following along on Twitter. Thanks for the recap Maria.
