Green and ‘Upcycling’ is a hot trend (source)

This year I was at the convention center for both days of the design show this week. Wednesday for Vicente Wolf’s talk on “Lifting the Curtain on Design’ and Thursday for Janice Lindsay’s talk on Colour Trends with Pittsburgh Paints. She had many fabulous images from her travels,(including this fun lamp from the Conrad Shop, below) to show where colour and design is moving now.

Fantasy is a Necessary ingredient to Living. Dr. Seuss
You had to be there for her talk as her images truly told the story. However she talked a lot about the new neutral (besides gray) called Cardboard or Brown Paper Bag:
What do you think? Are you seeing this colour as new?
Cindy, comment number 18 is the winner of my Novica giveaway!  Email me with your info and I’ll send over the gift certificate! Congratulations!

I like it, we're doing our bathroom in that color with travertine:-0 Soooo excited!

  • EdibleLandscapeDesign says:

I've always liked natural wood tones and most of the stains. I think they have a very classic/timeless look.

So in a way, yes, they look new but not so new as to be faddish like many "new" looks are.

  • Donna says:

Congratulations to your winner, Maria! Brown paper bag..that's a great name for that color.

It almost looks like just a natural wood color. That means my IKEA furniture is the right color. It does strike me as neutral..but not necessarily new.

  • Kathysue says:

What is that saying there is nothing new under the sun!!! I think that kind of goes in the design world, but and a big but, there are new combinations of things that will make it feel new and fresh. KS

  • Blue Fruit says:

Yep, I think she is spot on. This is a colour that everyone is responding to, but I think it depends what the colour is actually ON. Eg. not as a flat paint colour, but as woven textured fabric, or timber, or stone ~ in other words, when it is something that is already perceived as natural.

Great post ~ food for thought.

  • LaJuana says:

This is funny, on my monitor, the desk tops and some of the colors in the collage are reading “pinky beige” to me!

  • Maria Killam says:

    La Juana,
Eeeeek, I thought the same thing, which is why I just put out the question instead of saying anything about it myself.

Blue Fruit, I think you are absolutely right, it fits right into all the 'natural' textures, for sure.

…ummmm…. does this mean my pickled old/pinkish desk is coming back? (I'm thinking the new colour is not that pink) Don't know if that's bad or good! lol.

  • Pink Overalls says:

I love that cardboard and paper bag color. I think it's more flattering to more people than grey. Also, I think greys might be too sophisticated for some decor or some people. I'm seeing more yellow tones in it than pinks. Even though technically it might not be NEW, I'd welcome it being promoted as such, so those of us who like it aren't stigmatized as out of the loop. Can't be out of the loop, ya know.

  • Emom says:

Cardboard, huh?…..is this a take off on the whole recycling thing, or is that obvious to everyone else??….smiles.

  • Rhônya Holman says:

Great blog, it is so inspiring creative and intelligent.
    Cheers! (-:

I have always liked this color! It goes with everything and who doesn't like receiving a big cardboard box from a delivery service? Love it!
