When my client and her husband built a summer house right beside their home in the Fraser Valley and we started talking about the colour scheme, my first suggestion was an indigo coloured sectional which inspired the summery, nautical theme as well as created flow from the exterior since both homes were blue and white outside.
This is also their guest house and inside it’s a small space with the focus on their large deck and pool for outdoor entertaining. Introducing a sectional was the best way of defining the living area from the rest of the interior.
I’m showing you a sneak peek today but you’ll see the rest of it this week.

Love this West Elm Outdoor Bench for pool towels and beach bags.
When we got home from Christina Lake this evening my House Beautiful magazine was in the mailbox.
The September issue this month is all about the magic of Indigo. I’ve really noticed blue everywhere lately, from indigo to royal blue to navy blue, timeless blue is on the front pages of design.
Are you hankering to install some strong blues in your house?

I already have in several rooms.
The drapes that didn’t work in my living room with my paint color, my step-daughter wanted. And I helped her paint her walls a dramatic shade of navy that worked with the drapes. The room looks amazing.
We recently ordered a navy sofa for our houseboat on Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. It should arrive soon and we can’t wait! We ordered a long ottoman to match and a yachting tray to sit on it. While waiting, I’ve been styling the tray, leaving room for our coffee mugs or wine glasses, or course. Navy and white are natural colors when you live near, or in our case, ON the water.
Completed a design last month for a client loving navy blue.
She was the 1st one in 3 decades to be hooked on navy !
Talked about you today on my blog.

Not especially a fan of navy, have active dislike of royal blue, but am head-over-heels in love with what is referred to as Flag Blue (http://www.ftkltd.com/Pictures/Boat%20Port%2008.jpg — top strip color; http://www.bristol29.com/links/Maloha-paint-complete%20020.jpg — strange photo but good example of that blue. heh. )
“Navy”, like yellow, is hard to get right. But when it is right, it is breathtaking!!
Your color choices are excellent, Maria, as always! Beautiful space!
Hi Maria,
Many years ago we had a sectional the same cheery blue color as that one you feature. It was our all time favorite! Now we are trying to use indigo, navy and white accents and draperies to cheer up our brown leather sofas and not have to replace them. With burlap and natural woven items we seem to be slowly getting there. Love almost any shade of blue in blue and white porcelain! Thanks for sharing your vacations so generously with us! Looking forward to “visiting” eastern Canada!
Not a fan of navy – it can look smart, I know, but I guess four years of Catholic girls’ highschool mostly wearing pencil slim navy skirts with short-sleeved white shirts had an effect. I can admire but don’t really get turned on by blue rooms. Some aqua (as in my guest BR) or some touches of turquoise – that’s a different. Nevertheless, I know I’ll enjoy this house when more pix come.
I finally realized that I was decorating in colors I just didn’t like, or wear (earth tones) and wondered why it just never worked for me. Over the last two years I’ve redone my bedroom (sewed my own bedding, cushions and curtains) and family room (huge navy sectional, crazy blue/green/white rug) and absolutely love them both. Why didn’t I just look in my closet for inspiration in the first place? Thanks, Maria, for the confidence to step out and decorate with what I LOVE instead of what I thought was expected of me!
ha- I am just getting rid of blue kitchen cabinets because they didn’t work with the rest of my house. After 4 years, I found I got tired of the color. Although, now the only color my husband and I can compromise on is grey …because white just doesn’t work with these tired cabinets of mine. So it seems I am going the opposite direction of trend…blue is the new grey! Maybe grey won’t be so bad……I hope.
I’ve always loved blue & it I think it looks beautiful with gray. I’ve been wanting to paint my gray home navy blue for 12 years & am surprised it’s going to look trendy, now that I’ve procrastinated…
I wasn’t planning on using strong blues inside my home. It’s full of pale teal/turquoise & gray now, but my beige laundry room is feeling so boring…I’ve been contemplating Nelson Blue from Benjamin Moore…
Can’t wait to see the rest of the pictures! Love navy!
Love, love love navy. It is a favourite of both myself and my daughter who has her bedroom in navy and white. Love to wear it too although difficult to get right so it does not look like a corporate uniform or that I work for a health fund! I always have blue in my house somewhere as it is so easy to live with and goes well in our hot climate.
I am inspired by the blues being introduced with JCrew store decor. Check out the blue on the lovely couches with the London store :
I have indigo accent walls in my dining room and bedroom and love them.
Indigo…it is hot, hot, hot (classic.) franki
