Maria’s New Sideboard and Art in the Dining Room

By 09/06/2011January 28th, 201729 Comments

This is a new piece of art we picked up in Sechelt when we were there last weekend. We stopped into Anita Lindblom’s gallery on the Sunshine Coast Highway. Anita says people drop in to her studio just to get happy it’s such a wonderful and colourful space!

Wall Colour – BM CC-90 Natural Linen
This is my new sideboard for the dining room. I picked it up on Craigslist. It was already painted white. The cord from the light is taped behind it. I haven’t decided if I’m going to put anything underneath it. Most likely no.
The table lamp is from the Pottery Barn. At first I had two lamps sitting on it but then I felt it became too limiting as to what I could display on it.

See this adorable little vase? It makes any bouquet of flowers look good! We bought two pieces of her art for the master bedroom as well, it’s still a work on progress though, I’ll show you later.
I am still looking for a dining table. This is the style I want but it’s not the right colour. I want one in a medium brown. And I’m resisting getting it custom made because I worry that it won’t be exactly right and then I’ll be stuck with it. The other style I am considering is a Duncan Phyfe table but have not one of those yet either.
Does anyone know where I could find the parsons table in a medium brown?

    I have this: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70116262#/20182315/

and I *LOVE* it. I got the one that seats 6-10 people and it is fantastic. Get a big table and you will find reasons to fill it!

i have a painted sideboard in exactly the same style (can't remember what it's called)

and it's been so hard to figure out what other types of "leggy" furniture I can pair with it. It's gotten so bad I'm thinking I will have to sell it on Craigslist. lol

Anita is so great! She's my favorite artist on the coast, she is so sweet. And she does amazing work. I have a little painting of hers and yours makes me want a big one! Enjoy all that color!

First of all Maria, love your new piece of Artwork and Sideboard.

To answer your question: I have a tendency to lean towards 'oval' shaped tables for dining. Reason; besides their oppposing aesthetics in relation to a square or rectangular room, I love their versatility! I have discovered they will usually fit/suit almost any size of space and often will comfortably accommodate an extra chair or two if need be. Also I like the idea when one eliminates all leafs, the same table functions as a cozy and intimate 'round' table just for two. 🙂

I love this! It has such depth with the white and the bursts of colors! The different shaped vases with different flowers is also a great touch and such a clever idea.

Also, I just want to say thank you for your post – 10 things every blogger should know – I've made some changes over the last couple of weeks and so far I have about double my number of followers!

I really love your sideboard and art – definitely happy and beautiful! 🙂

We all seem to have a particular style in mind with furniture and nothing will do until we find it. Don't settle Maria. I went with a 54" round table because my room is square. I fell in love with these legs.

A great sideboard is a workhorse that can go from serving piece to being purely decorative. There are so many oak sideboards available on Craigs List and in Second Hand Shops. The sky is the limit. Once these pieces are painted and have new hardware they are a thing of beauty. Excellent find! The picture you chose on your trip is perfect, I really love the colours the artist used.

I hope you find the perfect table. I bought an oiled walnut table 38 years ago at a parking lot sale in a modern furniture store for $114 (very expensive for me then). It is sort of simple, handmade modern–so not my style. But I love it. It has three 17in. leaves and has worked in every house that I have ever been in (and I have been in many). I have had modern Breuer chairs, Italian cane chairs, and simple black rattan chairs with it. It just works. I have a painted red antique Chinese sideboard with it now. Table and I have a history together and many good memories.–Madeline

You must be enjoying having another area complete, Maria.

Funny you should mention those two styles. I wanted a parsons table, but ended up with a Duncan Phyfe style –drop leaf and w/ additional leaves, so it worked better for my small space.

I think this is a medium brown parsons table:

And if you don't want veneer, there's this:

    Good luck

    Love the art work!!!!

I can see the sideboard's hardware painted yellow. A modern table base, maybe something cubist, also yellow would look fabulous with a glass top, as Marla and other have suggested. You'd then have the perfect combination of trad and rad.

The underside of the glass can always be painted too.

Glass is a great table top option. Fabulously easy to clean. And looks so good with place mats. Plus one is never tempted to put a table cloth on it to protect "the wood". So many people have fabulous tables and they are covered by table pads and cloths. So what's the point?

  • Leigh says:

Beautiful art! For the table try Room and Board. I know you said you wanted a leaf, so I didn't mention it before, I don't think they have leaves, but you can usually get the size and color you want. Good Luck.

  • Diane says:

I can see why you chose that particular painting after seeing the photo of the oil painting you bought in Paris ("Inspiration and my Tiffany Blue Office", Aug. 29, 2010 post)… it must have spoken to you!

  • Nichole@40daysof says:

Great sideboard! And I like the painting, too. 🙂

  • RLC Interiors says:

West Elm has a walnut parsons table. It's a good price too. $400ish

  • Donna says:

Oh Maria!! I love that painting! And the white sideboard from Craigslist is a great find! Can you believe it? I saw a beautiful white dresser for only 20.00 on Craig's list. It looked like a sideboard to me. It had two doors in the middle that opened up and had drawers on either side.

Hubby said he thought it just wouldn't fit in our little dining room. Sniff.. Well, at least I'm thinking right, I see from your post. 🙂 When the kids are out of the house, we will get a smaller table. THEN I can have one of these.

Love those yellow chairs and the vase!

    Hi, Maria:

Are you familiar with Room and Board? They have a similar table available in different finishes. I believe they’ve added an extension table in this style too. Love your website and newsletters!
