Do you ever pull something out of your closet to wear and then soon after you’ve left the house, decide that you’re never going to wear it again? Well, that’s how I felt in my purple, ruffled top yesterday when I arrived at this event where the editors of Style at Home and Canadian Living gave a presentation on Fall 2013 Trends at the new Loblaws store in North Vancouver.

Okay, so you probably won’t be surprised to hear that lots of graphic black and white is still on trend for this Fall.
Lots of layered black and white prints (below).
Which of course is all over home decor as well. The tried and true, ‘Every room needs a hit of black’ still applies here.

Animal prints are more like a friend that show up every Autumn. They are here again this Fall.

On the flight to Raleigh this past week, I opened up my Vogue Magazine and there was a new shape in the Louis Vuitton collection that reminded me instantly of this bag.

As I was searching for leopard prints I found Kate Spade’s new Fall handbag. I do love how she incorporated her signature bow into this one.
Don’t they all look like they could be sisters of the Celine handbag? I’m not a fashion expert but it seems this is the newest shape.
Oh, and I have one more fashion tip that you can use immediately. Erin McLaughlin was generous enough to let me photograph her demonstrating the new way to roll up your sleeves on a jean jacket.
You could do this with your shirts too:
So take your sleeve and roll it up past your elbow. Make sure the underside of the sleeve shows about 2/3 when compared to the cuff of the jacket.
Then you fold it again so that it’s like another cuff. Let me tell you from experience, it’s not exactly comfortable to wear a jean jacket sleeve this way, but it’s fashionable.

So there you go, Fall fashion tips for 2013. Basically, if you want to look current, buy anything in a black and white pattern and you’re good to go.
And did I mention, my purple ruffled top is now buried somewhere at the bottom of my Sally-Ann bag?

Well, I think that purple top is GREAT! But I understand being tired of garments, even when they are technically “working” fine.

Do you love your purple ruffled top? If you do, (and as you often tell us), please don’t let the latest trend make you question what you love. Clothing is personal, as we all have our own individual “undertone.” I can wear black and pure white, but can’t wear off-white, ivory or brown, as I look terrible. My favorites are purples, greens, hot pinks, blues, black and other jewel tones (colors that look good on me, which I get compliments in). But there are people who look great in reds, browns, oranges and yellows. If you love the way you look in something, and the color goes with your skin and hair color, then even if it’s not “trendy” you will look your best….
I don’t love it because I think it’s trendy and therefore OUT. I wouldn’t say I’m a big expert on shopping timeless for fashion and I’m okay with some trendy items anyway. They come and go and are much easier to change than tile, haha.

I love the purple top on you. However, I’m not crazy about the short sleeved black cardigan that you wore over it. The purple top looks bold and the cardigan looks too sweet and conservative to go together. I think that if you lost the sweet cardigan, then the purple top and necklace would look fine.

I like the purple top on you and don’t see it as trendy. I also luv the necklace that you are wearing. However I don’t think you should be wearing them together as the necklace is a statement piece and should be worn with a simpler top. Try large earrings with that top instead. I know you can turn this idea into a lesson about design and accessorizing your home.

I might be heading to the Sally Ann, I love your purple top. I understand trends but could give two hoots about them, I love colour, lots of it. I think you looked absolutely lovely in your purple top. The way we dress reflects our own personalities, trends are all about other people’s likes and dislikes. Keep wearing bright colours, they suit your sunny personality.
I was just toying with getting rid of my herringbone swingy jacket when I read this. Guess its safe for another year!

It seems herringbone is always a tried and true and never really goes out of style. neither does black and white. I say if you love it & it looks great on you, wear it.
Ugh…I think I have to find some way to incorporate leggings or “skinny” jeans (I was really hoping they would go away) into my wardrobe. Not jeggings but something other than kaki cargo pants which don’t go with longer shirts. I seem to wear an assortment of fitted tees with my boyfriend style jeans. Doesn’t work with the now on-trend ankle boot (gotta buy those, too). Did I already say ugh?

My daughter sees patterns, shapes and objects in everything, she would have a fit if she saw it! I wonder if the design was some sort of joke?
I think you look great in that purple top, it’s very flattering and feminine, and the necklace makes it a fabulous outfit!

I think that this is basically the “J Crew rolling technique” but they are doing a longer section for the first fold to leave more of the cuff exposed. I bought a blouse recently and it came with the sleeves rolled this way. (It is a rather 1950s style blouse and looks super cute!) http://www.thecollegeprepster.com/2013/06/how-to-roll-sleeves-like-j-crew.html I don’t think looks great with a denim jacket because the fabric is too heavy and rolling the sleeves messes up the proportions.

From the photos, it looks like everyone is already in fall attire-black, neutrals and no color. They all looked in business attire except for the jean jacket and no color.
Bring the purple top out in the Spring and I think that you might feel differently about it. Your post is about color and maybe you want to stand out amongst all the black?

Look at Reed Krakoff’s website, they had the style of Celine’s bag last year, in mixed skins too. Julianna Moore favorited it in Elle Decor last year.

The purple top is great on you. . . and as others said, if you love it, then by all means, wear it! It’s not just about trends, after all. If you can’t wear something you love, then what is the point? The rolling up of the jean jacket sleeves is kind of lame. . . I don’t think I will ever do that. It would look so fake!

I can think of 2 reasons why you might not like the
purple blouse. The first is when I look at your pictures of
your living room I see a feminine look with a sophisticated “feeling” to it, but not overly “romantic”. The ruffled blouse is a very romantic look but would not really fit in your living room. So I don’t think your getting the “atmosphere, look, feel” that you want when you wear it. (I’m thinking along the
concept lines of the TV show “dress my nest” where
the designer turns something from the closet into an
element in the room only in this case the other way
around.)
The other reason is that it might not be proportionally
right or fit well on you and the design itself may not
flatter your body. Can’t tell from just the top half of you.
I’m struggling with my closet too as I’m going to a
new phase in my life and leaving the old behind, so I
can understand how you feel. Just as our homes are
more than roofs over our heads, our clothes are more
than just covering for our bodies.
Just my thoughts on the subject….like the way you
keep it real!!

All three of you look good. But you look great. Everyone can’t dress in black and white all the time, how boring would that be. It would be….”Wow, I like your black and white outfit”. Ditto. Ditto. Ditto.

I actually love the purple top on you, Maria. I think it would look smashing with a sharp black blazer/jacket. I’d definitely try it again…the top and necklace looked great together with the black, and your hair looked really gorgeous with it, too! And, for the record, I don’t lie about issues of vanity, especially not to my FRIENDS!
