6 Uninteresting Things about Me

By 06/11/2009June 22nd, 202117 Comments

I have been asked to share 6 uninteresting things about me:

1. I’m a bookworm, a design magazine worm and now because of this blog, I’m a blogworm. Really. When I was in school and someone was looking for me, they’d find me in the library. I’d go over to my friend Jennifer’s house who had a million Archie comics and she’d get cranky cause I’d just want to sit on her bed and read them.

2. I hate to be cold. In other words; I have a low tolerance for being uncomfortable. Which is why, in the winter, I mostly wear turtlenecks. I have one in every colour.

3. I know I’ve designed a space that really works for my clients when I come over later and everything is exactly where it was placed from the beginning (like the above photo for my bachelor client in North Vancouver). And I secretly like to get my clients to the point where they don’t buy anything without asking me first, shhhh don’t tell anyone.

4. When I’m in a public washroom, I only take one paper towel to dry my hands, and I judge everyone that takes two. The truth is, I hate waste of any kind. People that really know me, call me the ‘war rations girl’. I make juice you can see through and everyone can always tell if I’ve buttered the bread because there is barely any on it!

5. I will not leave the house without lipstick on. With the exception of going to the gym in the morning (too contrived). I recently met a lovely group of women that I hang out with when I do a ‘power up’ class at the gym. This past weekend when I arrived at a party one was holding for her birthday, NO ONE recognized me. That is how different (bad) I look without make-up. That is why there is no photo of me here [above] there aren’t many without my lips on!

6. I hate to Zig Zag. Because I am a designer, and book a lot of appointments, source fabric, furniture, etc, I am always very organized about how I schedule my day. I plan my shopping/appointments so that I’m driving in a circle, I will go to great lengths to avoid a zig zag and I get cranky on the occasion when this becomes unavoidable.

Thanks for sharing…very interesteing stuff. Title caught my eye and I'm glad I took the time to read.

  • Christine says:

Great post! I love the photo from your bachelor client's home. It's such a interesting arrangement.

  • Jennifer says:

Oh Maria, you sound just like me. Lipstick always, can't stand it if it's below 25C, no zig zagging, getting my clients to the point where they can't do a thing without running it by me, etc, etc. We are soooo alike. Love your blog and all the fabulous photos of your work.

      Hello Maria
I too am very much like you – I like everything organized and work in a perfect rhythm.

i’m working with a client, and i’m enjoying the fact that she runs everything by me before making a purchase. i’m practicing being bossy with this client, to tell you the truth I’m having the time of my life. The entire design concept is mine. Both husband and wife are pleased with my work. I originally got 3 rooms to work on and got the 4th
by the same client just as the first one is being
completed. Will be posting professional photographs taken.

I consider you to be my mentor wholeheartedly and have followed your advice about blogging and being opinioated about the aesthetics that I like.

      Thanx A Million
      My best regards to you.
      Farha

great "uninteresting stuff!" Hahaha I had the same thing with a group of mom's at my "stollerfit" workout class!! we all went to the movies and they were like "you look so different" hahaha translation: "you look scary in the mornings with no makeu..p" I also had this really short haircut (the bob) and had to wear it really ridiculously on the top of my head to keep it out of my eyes — it was bad!! hahah

ps- I LOVE LOVE LVOE your new header!!! so you!!!
    xoxo

  • Karena says:

Your new header is fab Maria!! I think I am due for a new one! So much in Common, lipstick, turtlenecks galore, my books keep growing and growing with the bookcases full and stacks everywhere!Even though I have given many to friends.

  • Michelle says:

LOL…in public bathrooms I tend to use too many towels, since I have to use one to open the door too! Bit of a germaphobic!!

  • Under a Green Roof says:

I am also a total turtleneck fiend! I hate to be cold, so I am always in a turtleneck or scarf in winter.

  • Lara Harris says:

My husband is from Australia and is amazed at how much we do seem to waste here, I guess you just don't realize it so much when you are used to it, but we are always given wayyy too many napkins, ketchup, etc., extra drinks even when you haven't finished your 1st one, and it has taken him awhile to get used to the fact that living in Michigan we never have to really worry about using too much water, whereas in Australia you do, due to a lack of water in many areas.

  • Wise Space says:

    Nice header Maria! Very you.

  • Renae says:

I am like Michelle….a bit neurotic on germs. Wash my hands all the time and even keep purell in my car.
    xo

  • DesignTies says:

Hey, your header changed again!! Looks good 🙂

I avoid public bathrooms altogether, unless I have absolutely no choice in the matter. You'd hate me — I use LOTS of paper towels because I try to avoid touching everything!!

Thanks again for helping out with our giveaway and for being our most prolific commenter 🙂 In the end, the winner is someone who posted just one comment. But she said that Jamie is her muse and colour hero, so the book is going to a good home where it'll be loved and appreciated 🙂
