When we taped this video at HomeSense last week I walked out thinking, ‘Did I say anything good?’ because styling is the air that I breathe, so I was so happy when my Digital Content Manager sent me the video for approval because I realized there were so many good tips!

Do not miss this weeks video, because your house will never feel truly like a home until you add accessories.

It’s like an outfit. If you throw on some clothes without any jewelry or belts or bags, well it just looks like you’re running errands on a Saturday, but add some accessories and you can take almost any outfit from blah to amazing!

Here’s where to learn the art of styling

Your living room is the same, and this month inside my new membership community we are focusing on pillowscapes. Not sure if that is a word but I’m telling you right now, it certainly should be.  And I’ve released my first module in a new course I’m working on called Styling School and it’s all about lamps. The module is free if you sign up before October 11. Anyone who is working on projects should be inside because it will be a place where my team and I hang out along with everyone else all speaking the same language to make sure your projects stay on the right track!

Anyway, I never sell furniture without including an assemblage of custom pillows as well because they make that sofa come to life.

See this post (below) for what this room looked like the first time I decorated it for a client, who then had me come back for this refresh.

I’ve come a long way baby!

Styling is everything

And just in case you’re wondering, there’s NOTHING frivolous about accessories. They bring soul into your house.

Remember those five suites I decorated for the transition house for women and children back in March? Well I recently met with their staff to talk about another project and I was so happy to hear that the families who are living in the suites are keeping them clean.

Why?

Because when it looks nice, it’s way more motivating to tidy up on the regular.

Think about that spare room in your house that’s a complete disaster (I have one too). It’s because NOTHING is happening in there decor wise so no one cares, it’s like the tupperware drawer or cabinet you throw it in quickly and shut it just as fast!

Watch all the makeovers here: one, two, three, four, five

There are so many good styling nuggets in those videos so watch them if you haven’t already! My favourite one in the photo above are the butterflies I attached to the cord that we couldn’t hide.

By the way, all the before and after photos are also inside the membership for those of you who wanted to peruse them at your leisure! Sign up here.

Situation Critical

I’ve been watching The Resident which is a hospital show on Netflix and it’s so good!

Anyway, in one of the episodes, one of the surgeons removed the wrong body part! And it made me realize that is exactly what happens when someone starts to renovate their house without any training on colour or without knowing which finishes belong in which style of house etc.

When you do that, you throw good money after bad.

Kind of like a mistake I saved a friend from this week. She was going to change her tile floor but nothing else so I said, absolutely no, not unless you’re changing everything else (and she wasn’t) so not only did I save her THOUSANDS of dollars, but now she can spend that money on furniture that works in the space instead of doing a half renovation with so called ‘neutral’ tile that would have made her space look even worse.

People spend so much money on the wrong finishes when a course like the one I teach will not only save you from making mistakes you’ll regret forever, you’ll now have a new problem, you’ll never want to leave your house 🙂

Oh, this was so fun! Would you ever consider doing a shop with me at Ikea?

  • Pamela says:

Best video ever, Maria! This was so specific, practical and helpful to see you compare and contrast different items and explain the “why” behind your thought process. Also seeing you use the color wheel in real time was solid reinforcement of everything you’ve been teaching. I would love to see monthly shopping trip videos at Home Goods.

Yes! Thank you for that off-whit lampshade tip! Also cracks me up when you decide you need to buy something on the spot hahaha

    Great video, very helpful (:

This video is incredibly helpful! Question about your courses and new community. When I bought your courses, I understood I had lifetime access to them and to any updates in them. Is that going away if we don’t join your community?
